2 Did you know that, as Presbyterians, we don t have a single doctrinal statement that is the litmus test for who is in and who is out? Rather, we have a Book of Confessions, which contains creeds, catechisms, and statements of faith that serve as authentic and reliable expositions of what Scripture leads us to believe and do. (Note that to confess means to tell the whole truth.) Put another way, the confessions are the lenses through which we read the bible. Below is a brief summary of the confessions that the Presbyterian Church (USA) holds as authoritative in our Constitution: Nicene Creed - Written in approximately 325 AD in Asia Minor (Turkey), this creed established Trinitarian orthodoxy for the church Apostle s Creed - First appeared in its current form in the 8th century, but fragments have existed as early as 200 AD as a form of baptismal preparation. Scots Confession of Faith - Written in 1560 in Scotland, it s the earliest Presbyterian/Reformed. Heidelberg Catechism - Written in 1563 in Germany, it was an attempt to reconcile differences between Calvinists and Lutherans around the Lord s Supper. Second Helvetic Confession - Written in 1566, it s the most widely recognized confession among the worldwide body of Reformed Christians. Westminster Confession of Faith - Written in 1647, it was an attempt to bring Reformed faith and Presbyterian government to the Church of England. Westminster Shorter and Larger Catechisms - Also written in 1647, it presents the Westminster Confession in question-andanswer format Theological Declaration of Barmen - Written in Germany in 1934, it was the Reformed church s stand against the imposition of the Nazi agenda on churches in Germany Confession of First confession written in America, developed around the theme of reconciliation in Christ during the turbulent sixties. Brief Statement of Faith - Written in 1983 following the reunification of the Northern and Southern branches of the Presbyterian Church. This is an exciting time to be the Presbyterian Church! As of this writing, our church is very close to adopting the Confession of Belhar, a powerful confession of Christian faith that emerged in South Africa during the years of Apartheid. It is named for the city in South Africa where it was first adopted. It is a statement that focuses on three themes, Unity, Reconciliation, and Justice, in a church environment where racial separation made it impossible for brothers and sisters in Christ to worship together or come to the Lord s Table together. Churches around the globe have recognized the power and theological insight of Belhar as an expression of Scriptural truth for their own contexts. You can read more about this confession and its impact on the church here: I give thanks for the confessions, for they are tangible reminders of the great cloud of witnesses that the writer of Hebrews envisions. They are reminders of the saints who have gone before us, who cheer us on as we run the race that is marked out for us with perseverance, always looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. 4 What a joy to have Nancy Marchant return in March to tell us about the church s mission trip to Nicaragua. Through slide we went along and visited an artisan market and home Sunday School, and attended Nancy s family welcome dinner. We saw the team s efforts as they painted the La Concho School and helped in the English classes. We could see it was a land of beauty with flowers everywhere. It is also a land of hospitality and hope. We can t wait to hear more as the team brings their story to the congregation. Nancy told us of the need of books in the library which touched many hearts in PWR. Circles are finishing their study of 2 Corinthians in the next few months. Esther Circle has a flexible meeting schedule and has childcare available. If you are interested in attending, contact Nicci at church. Mission Projects will meet at their regular time for May. Watch for summer schedule information in the next newsletter. Church Women United will meet Friday, May 1, at 10:30 am at Genesis United Methodist Church. It is Friendship Day and the theme is Journey of the Caregiver. May 10th is Gifts of Women Sunday. Make plans to attend! 7 WestAid is celebrating their 30th Anniversary! WestAid is a non-profit agency providing assistance in Southwest Tarrant County. They focus on emergency food aid to residents of the west side of Fort Worth. Ridglea Presbyterian is one of its contributing church members and we even housed WestAid in our building for many years! You can help them celebrate by: Donating 30 items of food to the red wagons Making a special donation of $30.00 to WestAid Volunteer for 30 hours at the WestAid office Plan to gather 30 people together to participate in the Trinity Trek in September Tell 30 people about the mission and importance of WestAid Let s help WestAid have a great anniversary year! Patriot House Ministry: Enjoy food & fellowship with the veterans at the Patriot House, a transitional housing unit at the Presbyterian Night Shelter. Sandwich Makers Needed: Gather your friends, your Sunday School class or your family and have a Sandwich Making Party! Ridglea has committed to making 200 sandwiches once a month for our homeless neighbors. Please help us make it happen!! Join the crew to visit and eat! June Calendar of Events: May 3rd: Bring a sack supper and we will leave at 5pm for a picnic at the park with games, trains, bus, etc. May 10th: Mother s Day!
