1 RIDGLEA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 6201 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth, TX (817) September 2014 Spotlight on Worship! Beginning September 3rd: We will begin a new Narrative Lectionary year on September 7th. The Narrative Lectionary goal is to trace the sweep of the biblical story in order to center the lives of believers in God s story. We will be offering both of these courses that are open to the public, as well as to church members, to help teach God s ways of handling money using biblical, practical steps. Along with weekly worship, there will be weekday readings and devotions available in the Narthex and Chapel foyer for families to take home to continue to participate in the greatest story ever told. If you would like the devotion mailed to you, please contact Virginia at or Virginia@ridgleapres.org Make plans to journey with us every week at 8:30am or 11:00am in person or on live streaming! Financial Peace is designed to help you manage your money, and Legacy Journey is about longer term strategies. Both courses are free, but materials are required. Childcare is provided. Sign up at Welcome Back Preschool!! Our Preschool will be back in full session on September 2. We are so glad we have been entrusted with these precious children bringing joy to our building! Please be mindful of car pool lines and building security!

2 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness Timothy 3:16 (NRSV) Friends, Have you ever tried to read the Bible straight through from cover to cover? Many people have tried, and some have succeeded, but most people get bogged down and peter out somewhere in Exodus or Leviticus (the 2nd and 3rd books out of 66). It s not surprising that people find it difficult to read the Bible like they read a novel or biography, because the Bible is unlike any other book! In fact, it s not a single book, but a library of 66 books, that when taken together, tell God s story of creation, redemption, and hope. Have you ever noticed that the Bible isn t organized in chronological order? For example, 1 and 2 Chronicles is almost a word-for-word retelling of 1 and 2 Kings. The Acts of the Apostles is essentially the second half of the Gospel of Luke, but the Gospel of John is sandwiched in between Luke and Acts. There are good and sound reasons for why the books of the Bible are organized in the way that they are, but these organizational quirks present some challenges when preaching and teaching God s story. That s why I am thrilled to announce that we will be using the Narrative Lectionary as a guide for our worship life during the academic year. As you may know, a lectionary is simply a schedule of one or more Scripture readings for a given day. The Narrative Lectionary is a schedule of readings that enables a congregation to engage the broad sweep of the Biblical story in its chronological order. The Narrative Lectionary is organized roughly around an academic year schedule. In the Fall through Advent, we ll look at Old Testament readings that move through the story of God s dealings with Israel and culminate in Advent with the prophets who speak of longing and hope and the coming of the Messiah. From Christmas through Lent, we ll look at readings from the Gospel of Matthew. We ll follow the story from birth of the Messiah at Christmas, the public revelation of the Messiah during Epiphany, and the Passion and Resurrection through Lent, Holy Week and Easter. From Easter through Pentecost, we ll look at resurrection accounts, stories from Acts, and readings from Paul s letters which tell of the power of the Holy Spirit s presence. I encourage you to pick up the home devotionals for daily use. These devotionals give suggested prayers and engagement activities to use as an individual or a household, and they give suggested Scripture readings that help fill in the gaps in the story from week to week. I hope that you will make use of these resources as we once again tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. See you in church! Pastor Ryan Financial Update January July Total Income 364, Total Expenses 359, Every gift makes a difference for the kingdom of God! Thank you! Notes from the Flock: Nancy Ritts wishes to express thanks and gratitude for all the hugs, cards, s, texts, and other expressions of caring she has received in the loss of her beloved young grandson who had just become a new father.

Building Update As you may know, at a called congregational meeting on May 4, 2014, the congregation elected and empowered two committees to work on issues related to the unsolicited property purchase offer the congregation received in the summer of The Negotiating Team was charged with finding and presenting the best possible offer for the church. The team has been meeting regularly, and to date, they have received expressions of interest from four separate entities. Of those four, two have risen to the top in terms of price and sale conditions, and the team is in the process of drafting and revising contract language with the top two parties. The team anticipates that they will be ready to present the best contract proposal to the congregation sometime in the next six to eight weeks. The Search Team has also been meeting regularly, and should a property sale materialize, they have identified a handful of potential relocation sites and scenarios. In the coming weeks, they will be working closely with the Negotiating Team to prepare a thorough and thoughtful presentation to the congregation. As you may remember, the congregation's bylaws require three Sundays' notice for a called congregational meeting. If and when the teams are ready to report to the congregation, the session and the church staff will do everything in their power to ensure that the congregation receives adequate and timely notice. Stay tuned, and keep praying for God's will to be revealed! Intergenerational Sunday School Mission Month a Success! Together, we: * Collected a car load of groceries for Westaid * Made birdfeeders * Knotted 13 blankets for Project Linus * Packed sack lunches * Packed up 95 Hygiene Kits for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance * Prepared a meal for Patriot House * Made 200 sandwiches for the Presbyterian Night Shelter Many thanks to those who donated items or helped with stations!
