1 RIDGLEA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 6201 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth, TX (817) October 2013 October 13, 2013 World Communion Sunday October 6th Peacemaking October 6th

2 Dear Ridglea Family, As you may know by now, earlier this summer, a commercial real estate developer submitted to the church an unsolicited offer to purchase the church property. On September 8, the congregation met to decide whether or not to study the matter any further. After much prayer and conversation, the congregation discerned that God is calling the church to study the offer and related issues in more detail. The session has called a meeting of the congregation for Sunday, October 13, at 12:30 p.m. in Williams Hall. In addition to our regular business of electing elders and deacons and hearing a report from the session about projected ministry needs for 2014, the nominating committee will present a slate of names to be elected to the property research team. This ad-hoc team will work together to research the purchase offer and related issues and will bring a report and recommendations to the congregation at a future date yet to be determined. On a personal note, I want to express my thanks to those who participated in the congregational meeting on September 8. In true Presbyterian fashion, you handled yourselves decently and in order while also making ample room for the Holy Spirit to move within us. I am especially grateful for the faithful work of Clerk Jane Sisolak, Elder Mary Riley, Elder Bob West, and tellers Beth Duncan, Mike Strange, Tyllis Chambless, and Robin Roberts. The writer of Hebrews notes that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses in the saints who have gone before us and who now rest from their labors in the Lord. One of the ways in which the Church has long celebrated this great cloud of witnesses is with the observation of All Saints Sunday, typically celebrated the first Sunday in November. On November 3, Ridglea will celebrate All Saints Sunday with special music from the Chancel Choir, the celebration of the Lord s Supper, and the Naming of the Honored Dead. We will read aloud the names of each of the members of RPC who have died and joined the Church Triumphant since last year s All Saints Sunday. In addition to reading the names of the recently deceased RPC members, we will print the names of family members and friends who have died in the last year in the worship bulletin as we lift them up to God and give thanks for the gift of their lives. If you would like to remember someone who has died since November 4, 2012, please send a note to jessica@ridgleapres.org and we will be sure to include them in our worship on All Saints Sunday. See you in church! Ryan

3 More than a dozen women from our church attended the Horizon Bible Study at First Pres. We joined other local PW s to hear the author of this years study, Janice Catron. She gave a brief overview and reminded us that at times we have all been or will be strangers in a foreign land. We look forward to taking the journey with the Israelites through Exodus. Church Women United meets on Nov. 7th for World Community Day - place to be announced. 9 IN YOUR Reminder: No food or drinks in the Sanctuary When Christians Get It Wrong by Adam Hamilton begins with a study of the reasons why young people are turning away from churches today. At least 75% of young adults surveyed believe that Christians are judgmental, homophobic, hypocritical and too political. Hamilton reframes these issues in ways that allow you and me as Christians to tackle the problems with love and understanding. Personally, I loved this book. Also new in the library is The Self - Shaming God Who Reconciles by Warner Bailey. More about this one later. Free Guitar Class and Club Philippe Bertaud invites you to participate in a Free Guitar Class and Guitar Club on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM. You will learn chords, improvisation, music theory and play with other folks with the goal to bring joyful music to the community and sharing great time! Contact Philippe: info@philippebertaud.com Session Modifies Benevolence Program... when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed Luke 14:13-14 The session approved changes to the Bus Ticket and Sack Lunch ministries at the meeting held on September 19, The Bus Pass ministry has been cancelled. Sack lunches will be distributed between the hours of 9 and 12, M-F. Session Establishes Benevolence Group Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress... James 1:27 Session established a small group to handle benevolence requests for church members. The group members are Ryan Baer, Clay Roberts and Will Stallworth. The congregation is requested to make benevolence needs for congregation members known to any member of the group. All benevolence matters will be held in confidence.
