1 RIDGLEA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 6201 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth, TX (817) June 2015 Summer Sermon Series Begins May 31st: Psalms: The Hymnal of Our Ancestors May 31: Psalm 1 June 7: Psalm 23 June 14: Psalm 88 June 21: Psalm 100 July 5: Psalm 137 Come and Worship! Sunday, June 28th Summer is here! Which means vacations and sometimes a departure from our "regular" format at RPC. On June 28th, we would like to try something different, an OLD FASHIONED HYMN SING accompanied by the congregation! Yes, bring any "instrument" you have and come make a joyful noise with us at 8:30 and 11:00. We will have sheet music and chord tabs available for the hymns on regular and transposing instruments. I'll be looking for those mandolins, banjos, guitars, cellos, violins, saxophones, autoharps, tambourines, and ukuleles I've heard about. We will also provide some percussion sticks. The grand piano and organ are available upon request! Friday, June 5th 6:00pm 8:00 pm Currie Hall Bring your family s favorite game and a snack to share! Come have fun with your church family!

2 A wise mentor once cautioned me that ministry can be a lonely endeavor, and over the years, I have found that to be true. Although ministers are generally people persons, and although our work involves nearly constant interaction with people, the hat of pastor is one that you never quite take off, even in relaxed social settings. Despite our Reformed emphasis on the priesthood of all believers, there is an aspect of serving in an ordered ministry that involves being set apart. Therefore, pastoral friendships are vital to the long-term health of clergy. No one understands the joys, sorrows, hopes, and frustrations of pastoral ministry quite like other pastors. Last month, Amy, the boys, and I drove to Alabama, where we spent a week with five other families, all of whom are engaged in full-time ministry within the Presbyterian Church (USA). All of us met and became friends during our days at Columbia Seminary, and every year since 2009, we have brought our families together to spend a week playing, laughing, eating, and studying together. We spend some time each week in intentional conversation about issues related to our sense of call to ministry and haring reflections and challenging one another in the way that only really good, trusting friends can. We share resources and best practices with one another in hopes that our ministries might be strengthened together. This year, we once again took advantage of modern technology as we met via Skype for two days with the Rev. Dr. Martha Moore-Keish, Associate Professor of Theology at Columbia Theological Seminary. We engaged Dr. Moore-Keish with theological questions that have arisen from our own contexts of ministry, and she shared with us some of her insights from her latest book entitled, Christian Prayer for Today. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for affording me the time and the resources to go to this annual event. Although it s not like a conference in the traditional sense, I am so thankful that you have seen fit to include this week of continuing education leave in my terms of call as your pastor. This annual gathering is vital both for me and my family s health and endurance in ministry, and every year I come back feeling refreshed and energized. On a related note, this June I will be traveling to McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago for a week as I begin work in the Doctor of Ministry program. The first course in the program is titled When Three or More Are Gathered: Group Dynamics and Leadership. I have already learned so much from the pre-class assignments and readings, and I can t wait to share what I ve learned with you! As always, I am so very grateful for our talented church staff, especially when I must be away from the church for a few days. It is a privilege to serve Christ alongside them! Peace be with you, Ryan

5 At our General Meeting in May, we were off to Saudi Arabia with Susan Maxwell as our guide. She had worked in a hospital there a number of years ago. Through slides and wonderful stories, we were transported back to 1979 to a culture much different than ours. Despite the culture shock she said she always felt safe. She got a lot of attention being a sight for that time as people had not seen many non-muslims, (white), women. She loved vacationing at Jeddah on the Red Sea. A plus was being able to easily fly to Europe or Africa and back the same day. Signs reading Camel Crossing were numerous. Life there was sometimes funny, sometimes sad, always interesting. We were pleased to surprise Thylis Chambless with a lifetime membership honorarium at the Gifts of Women service this Mother s Day. She is a hard, faithful worker for PW and Ridglea church. Pastor Elizabeth led a beautiful service of tributes to the women who have influenced our journeys of faith. Circles will not be meeting over the summer, but will resume in September. Mission Projects will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of the month only. Shirley Baxter would love to put you to work! All Circles (and ALL women!) will meet on June 2nd at 10:30am for a closing meeting followed by a pot-luck lunch and sandwich making event for the Presbyterian Night Shelter. Bring a dish to share and join in! Circle August 16th on your calendar for the Women s Tea and celebration of Terrific Texas!
