2 ST. MARY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Dear Parishioners: Encounter Dita... Dita, her husband and their seven children depend on the money they earn selling crops from their small farm in Ethiopia. But frequent droughts often mean that families like Dita s who depend on home-grown crops go hungry. And amidst the current, historic drought, more than 10 million people are struggling with hunger. But thanks to a CRS program that helps families prepare for crises like droughts, Dita was able to build a new house and open a small store. Instead of relying solely on what she can grow on her farm, she is able to sell items like pasta, shampoo and bananas. She earns a steady $400 a month. Before, I had to get eggs from my neighbors. Now I have 15 hens, she proclaims. Saving money and being able to borrow not only allowed her to buy hens but also a metal roof for her new house, a rarity for families in this part of Ethiopia. Now we have no problems with food, she says. Unlike families across Ethiopia that struggle to find enough to eat, Dita says her children eat three times a day, thanks to her newfound business knowledge. And what s more, all her children are attending school. When I was a child, there were no education opportunities, she says. Then, with a shy but proud smile, she adds, That s a big difference. I recognize that it can seem like a dramatic leap, moving from considering a life situation like the one Dita and her family face, to a consideration of the financial situation of our local parish, within a culture where there is relatively such abundance. Nevertheless, in order to be responsible and accountable, I must draw your attention to the sixmonth financial report of St. Mary Parish, printed in this issue. To put things in a most basic manner: wherever one sees parentheses, this indicates a negative figure either we are bringing in less than projected in order to meet costs, or we are in deficit spending. There are a good deal of parentheses in this report. While I have no desire to promote apprehension and fear, yet as Pastor I have a duty to communicate that the St. Mary Finance Council has been looking with concern for some time at our overall fiscal situation. While I believe that the staff both on the parish and the school side are working diligently to keep spending under control, yet there is the universal reality of increased annual costs for most every aspect of our operation. Finally, I want to encourage parishioners to be on the look-out, in next week s bulletin, for more detailed info. on a workshop on opiate addiction that is to be held at Wayne College on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, from 1-4:30 p.m. Peace, 2 WOOSTER, OH Mass Schedule and Intentions *see facing page for feasts and memorials observed Sunday, April 2 8:00am Geraldine Fry 11:00am Chris Fisher 1:00pm Spanish St. Agnes in Orrville 5:30pm Mass: Pro Populo 6:30-10:30pm Adoration Monday, April 3 7:00am Doris Massaro 9:00am Adoration opens 9:30am Nursing Home Mass at Westview (All are welcome!) 7:00pm Communal Penance Service with Individual Confessions Tuesday, April 4 7:00am Larry Schafrath Wednesday, April 5 9:30am Cliff Prewett Thursday, April 6 7:00am Don, Lillian, and Chris Massaro 6:00pm Adoration closes Friday, April 7 7:00am Arzice Bianca C. Each year Wayne County Children Services participates by hosting various events and activities throughout the month of April to highlight the growing number of child abuse and neglect allegations we investigate as well as the services we provide for the community. Among the things you may have noticed are the hundreds of blue pinwheels we place outside each year. Pinwheels for Prevention is part of Child Abuse Prevention month. A blue pinwheel often seen as a symbol of childhood, is used to bring attention to the number of children experiencing abuse or neglect in their own home. There is a growing need for Foster and Adoptive families. If you have any questions about and/or are interested in finding out more about being a Foster or adoptive home, please contact: Suzanne Greenberg at (X2339) or at Suzanne.Greenberg@jfs.ohio.gov 3
