4 Welcome to Formed, an exciting new spiritual journey for St. John s. Formed is new gateway to the best Catholic teachings videos, books, and audio talks to deepen your relationship with Christ and his Church. All in one place. Accessible on most smart phones, tablets and computers. Formed leverages the power of today s technology and the partnership of the most trusted Catholic apostolates to give us the advantage to learn about the teachings of the Catholic faith in your home, while traveling to work. This Lent we will begin as a parish together with the following program. The Formed team members are Deacon Jim, JoEllen Newton, Jim Wasko, B Wasko and Pat Raschio, and they are available to answer your questions or help you get set up. Our Lenten Program, Opening the Word, offers prayer and insights using each Sunday s Scriptural lessons. A variety of experienced presenters facilitate thought and discussion for personal faith formation or in the context of a group faith sharing. Options for participating in our 5 week program : 1) Group Faith Sharing: Sunday During Lent after the 10 AM mass in the Saalfeld Room from 11:15-12:00 starting Feb.14th through March 20th 2)Thursday evening Feb.11th in the School Library from 7-8 pm. 5 Since our last report in October, 2015, St. John s has grown from 21 participants to 23, and we will receive a quarterly reward of $76.48 to go to our operating budget. Imagine what it would be if 100 parishioners registered their rewards card with Fred Meyer! It does not diminish your rewards, only allows St. John s to be the recipient of Fred Meyer s program. Kroger s (Fred Meyer parent company) is donating $2.5 million per year to non-profits in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington, based on where their customers tell them to give. Here s how YOU can participate: Sign up for the Community Rewards program by linking your Fred Meyer Rewards Card to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Go to: communityrewards and search for us by our name, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, or by our non-profit number assigned by Fred Meyer: Then, every time you shop and use your Rewards card you are helping us earn a donation that will be applied to our operating needs. You will still earn your rewards points, fuel points and rebates, just as you do today. If you do not have a Rewards card, they are available at the Customer Service desk of any Fred Meyer store. If you have questions or would like help signing up for this program, please contact Libbie in the parish office. Vacation Bible School will be July COME JOIN US! 6 Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio (sources At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) Consider today s Gospel reading from the perspective of the apostles Peter, James, and John. What an amazing experience it must have been for them to witness the Transfiguration! Jesus singles these men out to join him as he ascends a mountain to pray. When they reach the summit, they see their master like never before. Jesus face changes and his clothes become dazzling white, as Peter, James, and John catch a glimpse of his glory. They also see Jesus conversing with two of the most famous men in Israel s history: Moses and Elijah. These men represent the two key parts of the Old Testament: Moses, as the author of the Torah, represents the Law; and Elijah, a great prophet, represents the Prophets. Together, their presence at this moment of Jesus transfiguration symbolizes how the entire Old Testament the Law and the prophets finds fulfillment in Christ. Finally, Peter, James, and John hear a heavenly voice the voice of God the Father say to them: This is my chosen Son; listen to him. The disciples keep secret what they have seen. Not until they also witness his Passion and death will the disciples understand Jesus' Transfiguration. We, however, can foresee the glory of Jesus' Resurrection. We hear this story of Jesus' Transfiguration early in Lent, but we have the benefit of hindsight. In our hearing of it, we anticipate Jesus' Resurrection even as we prepare to remember Jesus' Passion and death. Today s Gospel reading focuses on the revelation of Jesus glory as he begins his final journey to the Cross. By His death and resurrection, Jesus will lead a new Exodus - liberating not only Israel but every race and people from slavery to sin and death. He will lead all mankind, not to the territory promised to Abraham in today's First Reading, but to the heavenly commonwealth that Paul describes in today's Epistle. Jesus fulfills all that Moses and the prophets had come to teach and show us about God. This mysterious event continues to have spiritual application to our lives today. Like the three apostles, we are called to ascend with Jesus every time we pray. And in prayer with our Lord, we are called to seek his glorious face and listen to him. Jesus appearance was changed while he was praying. What kind of changes have you experienced in your life as a result of prayer either while you have been praying or after you started to cultivate a habit of prayer? Responding to the Father s command to listen to Jesus, come up with one specific resolution you can make this week to help you listen more closely to Jesus. Merciful Like the Father. The fast pace of your life may seem to leave little time and energy for the traditional Lenten practices. But you can weave moments of spiritual awareness and service into even the busiest of schedules. The trick is to see Lenten practice as part of, rather than in addition to, each activity of your ordinary hectic day. The three foundational practices of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Here s how to think about them in a new way: Praying Daily If you make a habit of saying a little prayer whenever someone irritates you, cuts you off in traffic, or makes life difficult; when someone does you a favor, you experience great and friendly service, or when something joyful happens to you you will soon find yourself praying your way through the day. Try this simple practice and you will be observing the Catholic Church s call for greater prayer during the Lenten season. You will also find that this habit makes your life flow smoother, your self more centered, and your Spirit more aware of God s presence.

10 ARCHBISHOP S CATHOLIC APPEAL Last weekend we heard Archbishop Sample talk about the importance of the good works accomplished because of the Archbishop s Catholic Appeal, and asked for your financial commitment. Out of all the Masses, we had about 100 pledge envelopes turned in Does that mean you have already returned your pledge by mail? If not, the ACA envelopes can be found at the back of Church (English on the North side and Spanish on the South side tables of the Narthex. This year, our parish goal is $58, 734 which is unchanged from the last two years. Last year we achieved 80% of our goal, which qualified us for certain grants - If you have not already done so, please complete your pledge card, indicating your gift or pledge to our Catholic Church in Western Oregon. It is important for all of us to participate in order to support our universal church here in western Oregon.
