The program will run at all three weekend Masses during Lent, finishing the weekend prior to Easter. This year we are encouraging cash donations where possible rather than food, although we will continue to accept food donations as we have in the past. Cash donations have the advantage of leveraging Saint Vincent De Paul s better purchasing power, allows the purchase of the exact food as and when needed and significantly cuts down of the level of manual handling of food. In support of this change one of our Knights has agreed to a 20% match on all cash donations. Knights will be at each door accepting donations after each Mass and food collection boxes will be in each entryway. We thank you for your generosity in support of the needy in our community. Members of Fr. Joseph Saal Council #15640 are proud to make a donation in the amount of $50 to the Lenten Food Drive in memory of Martin James Geisler (4/22/1928-2/7/2017) father of parishioner & Fellow Knight Stephen Geisler. 4 March 19, 2017 The Third Sunday of Lent 1 Sm 16:1, 6-7, 10-13/ Eph 5: 8-14/ Jn 9:1-41 A woman encounters Jesus at Jacob s well while drawing water for her household. Their thirst brings them together. Given the strict rules of public decorum regarding encounters between men and women not of the same family this chance meeting could have been over before it began. Add to this that Jews and Samaritans had been the bitterest of enemies for centuries. Their hatred for one another and hostility toward the other knew few if any equals. But yet, the two sit, talk and listen to one another. Through their mutual acceptance of the other, the walls, boundaries, hostilities and hatreds, which had long separated Samaritans and Jews, melt away and disappear. The Samaritan woman comes to understand who Jesus is. Initially he is a Jew, the despised and hated other. As he candidly speaks of her marital history, she comes to believe that he is a prophet. As Jesus teaches her and reveals more of his identity the woman says, I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ; when he comes he will tell us everything. Jesus replies, I am he, the one who is speaking to you. The woman then hurries away excitedly, to tell others in the town about this extraordinary man at the well. She asks, Could he possibly be the Christ? After listening to the woman and then listening to Jesus, the townspeople come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah. The author of John s Gospel says, The woman left her water jar and went into the town. Perhaps, knowing she was coming back, she knew she could retrieve it later. Or, did the author intend another meaning? Could the jar left behind serve as a metaphor for the life she had been living? As she came to know more fully the person of Jesus, by talking with him and listening to him, was her life changed? Had she come to believe that by drinking of the water he gives, that she would never thirst again? Leaving water jars behind can be risky. Perhaps she was willing to take the risk. Maybe we should ask ourselves: What is our water jar? Would we be willing to take the risk and leave it behind? Another Lenten Reflection can be found at BestLentEver.com Fasting and Abstinence Regulations All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. All Catholics between the ages 18 and 59, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. To fast means to eat only one full meal. Two smaller meals also may be taken for good health but together they should not equal, a full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed. St. Cyril Women s First Saturday April 1, :30 am 11:30 am Hall Fireside Room Speaker: Rev. Raymond Carey, Ph.D Topic: Jesus Relationship With Women JESUS RELATIONSHIP WITH WOMEN Rev. Raymond Carey, Ph.D, teaches that one of the unique aspects in the ministry of Jesus was His deep respect for women. Father notes that at the time of Jesus, women could not be disciples of a Rabbi, yet there were women in the company of his disciples, following Jesus and committed to Him. Father will be sharing with us examples of Jesus elevating women s lives and work as He This will definitely be an encouraging and interesting presentation not to be missed. Come and bring a friend. Raymond Carey, a frequent and much beloved visitor to parishes, is a priest of the Archdiocese of Portland, serving as a counselor for priests and religious, adjunct professor at Mt. Angel Seminary, consultant for vocation and formation ministers, and as a retreat director and lecturer both nationally and internationally. He holds Master s degrees in Theology and in Counseling Psychology, and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Women of the parish and their guests are invited to attend this special presentation. We meet monthly on the first Saturday of each month from October through May to enjoy fellowship, refreshments and gifted speakers. No reservations are required. There is no charge, however, free will donations are accepted as this group is self -supporting. March 19, 2017 Page 5

6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY Pre-K through Middle School News Thank you Middle School Youth Group for leading our Stations of the Cross for Children at the Lent Faire. They did a wonderful job and the students also participated by praying The Our Father along with them and sharing a prayer intention after each station. Students at the faire colored in pictures of Jesus and learned about Holy Week through some puzzles and booklets. They created a collage of photos of people from around the world in need of our prayers. They are very willing to pray for other people around the world. They show compassion for their living situations and ask for God s help for them. As we continue our journey through Lent may we remain focused on fasting, almsgiving and prayer. High School Youth Group/Confirmation Is there more sin in the world today? Our high school youth group has been delving into a reflective study of sin and it s role in daily life. They took a hard look at how people act in school and the work place and on the internet and decided that there are even more opportunities to make bad choices and that many people do. Perhaps we are just more aware of sinful acts because of the news and social media that see everything and report it right away. It is really up to us to choose how much we allow ourselves to be affected and influenced by these stories. Thank you High School Youth and Confirmation Students who acted quickly to help clean up the church basement and outside stairwell area. Please consider volunteering during Holy Week as needed. Would you help with Children s Liturgy of the Word? Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Luke 18:16 Is the Lord calling you to serve the children of the parish? Children s Liturgy of the Word needs more catechists, for the K through 5th grade group at the 10:30 Mass. SPANISH MASS At the request of the Vicar for Archdiocesan Spanish Ministry and with the support of our Vicariate, St. Cyril has agreed to celebrate a Spanish Mass the last Sunday of each month at 1:30 pm starting on March 26th. Bienvenidos a todos. Saint Vincent de Paul Thank you for your support of the Knights of Columbus Lenten drive for St. Vincent de Paul.
