Stewardship & Evangelization 6

The Breathing Prayer Breathe in God s Love Breathe out 7

What do you suppose most Catholics think when they hear the words Stewardship & Evangelization? 8

The Real Meaning of the Words "Evangelization is bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ into every human situation and seeking to connect individuals and society by the divine power of the Gospel itself." Evangelization is about conversion. 9

The Real Meaning of the Words Stewardship is the way disciples of Jesus choose to live their lives. They recognize that everything they have is a gift from God, and they strive to use those gifts to honor and serve God, to help other people, and to make the world a better place. Stewardship is about conversion. 10

Evangelization & Stewardship Two sides of the same coin 11

Evangelization and Stewardship Hear the Good News Share the Good News Become a Believer Be a Good Steward Become a Disciple 12

Stewardship and Evangelization What does this mean? (Evangelization) What must we do? (Stewardship) 13

Evangelization and Stewardship Hear the Good News Share the Good News Become a Believer Be a Good Steward Become a Disciple 14

Why haven t I heard about this before? 15

The Life, Death & Resurrection of Jesus What does it mean? 16

The Great Commission "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Mt )." 17

Evangelization The Greek word, evangelizo means good news. 18

By the early part of the 20th Century, Catholics began to ask: What must we do? Young Christian Worker Catholic Evidence Guild Cursillo Movement Catholic Action Movement Legion of Mary The Catholic Worker Catholic Youth Organization Christian Family Movement 19

New Awareness Emerged Second Vatican Council ( ) International Catholic Stewardship Council (1962) (www. catholicstewardship.com) Evangelization in the Modern World (1975) Paulist National Catholic Evangelization Association (1977) ( The New Evangelization (1990) Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization (2011) (google: Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization) 20

The crisis we are living through carries with it signs of the exclusion of God from people s lives, a general indifference to the Christian faith, and even the intention of marginalizing it from public life. Pope Benedict XVI

Two Pastoral Letters

Go and Make Disciples Goal I: "To bring about in all Catholics such an enthusiasm for their faith that, in living their faith in Jesus, they freely share it with others. Goal II: "To invite all people in the United States, whatever their social or cultural background, to hear the message of salvation in Jesus Christ so they may come to join us in the fullness of the Catholic faith. Goal III: "To foster the gospel values, promoting the dignity of the human person, the importance of family, and the common good to our society, so that our nation may continue to be transformed by the saving power of Jesus Christ." 23

Stewardship: A Disciple s Response Stewards of our lives and our faith Stewards of Creation Stewards of Vocation Stewards of Church 24

Stewardship: A Disciples s Response Every member of the Church is called to evangelize, and practice the authentic Christian stewardship that leads to evangelization. As stewards of the mysteries of God, people desire to tell others about them and about the light they shed on human life, to share the gifts and graces they have received from God, especially knowledge of Christ Jesus 25

Time for Questions & Comments 26

How does stewardship and evangelization happen? Living faith-filled lives Sharing our faith stories Prayer & celebrating liturgy Using our gifts and talents Inviting and Welcoming Reaching out to people in need Protecting all of God s creation Educational programs, retreats, ministries Giving thanks to God for everything 27

Think about how you were evangelized 28

Think about what stewardship means to you 29

What s Your Style? Servant Style Inviting Style Relating Style Witness Style Intellectual Style Challenging Style 30

The Latest Trend? Combining Stewardship and Evangelization? 31

Combining Stewardship & Evangelization Start a Stewardship & Evangelization Team Read and discuss the USCCB documents Think and pray about the gifts and needs of the parish. Brainstorm ideas about what kinds of things will spark new life and faith in the parish community. Look for ways to make your parish more welcoming. Encourage committee members to invite other parishioners to use their gifts in starting new projects and new ministries. Keep track of the good things that happen as a result of evangelization and stewardship. Share the stories with the whole parish. 32
