2 Living the Word of Christ Together Pastor: Parochial Vicar: Deacons: Office Administrator: Rectory Phone: Office Phone: Fax: website: Father Bruce Riebe Father Jan Cizmar Bill Fredrick, Robert Kirschner Michele Wiltshire Liturgy Requests Starting November 1 requests for liturgy intentions will be taken for the calendar year Inquiries can be made over the phone, via or by forwarding a listing. Because there is usually a high demand for the weekends, we ve had in place a policy that has worked quite well. To ensure fairness, there is a limit of one weekend liturgy. If openings exist (and at times they do) three weeks prior to a weekend, additional requests will be honored. There are ample availabilities for weekday liturgies. (At those services the name of the deceased person is mentioned numerous times and Eternal Memory is sung at the end.) For liturgies on hand, they are being persolved at the rate of three a year on a rotating basis. (If you d like them celebrated more frequently or on specific days, just let Father know.) During the week we average around 8-12 folks in the pews and nine-nine percent of the time someone is available to lead the singing. The Diocesan suggested stipend for a liturgy is ten dollars. When a loved one dies and liturgies are offered, family members are bound to have those services rendered by submitting a list to Father in a timely manner (special dates can be selected).
3 October 30, 2016 Glory to Jesus Christ! Liturgy Schedule Monday October 31 8:00 a.m. Beatrice Lang by Bea Chrustic Tuesday November 1 8:00 a.m. Rose Carpenter by Mary Janocko Wednesday November 2 8:00 a.m. Anna Klinkovsky by Joseph Klinkovsky Thursday November 3 8:00 a.m. Marge Rohal by Betty Petruno Friday November 4 8:00 a.m. Carole Julian by Family Saturday November 5 4:00 p.m. William Greb by Lisa Greb/Phil Burne Sunday November 6 10:30 a.m. Intention of the Parishioners Altar Servers Lectors Greeters November 5 4:00 p.m. C. & G. Tinter Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven. Matthew 5:16 We made it! Actually, we ve surpassed our assigned goal of $14, Everything collected now will be returned to the parish at the close of the campaign next year. We hit the target with less than 25% participation from the congregation. Our coffers were hit quite hard with the parking lot project this past summer. So, let s get some pledges from the remaining 75% especially knowing that the donation specifically will benefit St. Joseph Church. (Consider this especially if your giving habits maybe haven t been where you d like them to be for whatever reason. Sixty five donors have contributed $16, putting us over our goal! Thanks to everyone who participated in the Baby Bottle Campaign during Respect Life Month to benefit Womankind in Garfield Hts. The delivery will be made this week. In the spirit of Thanksgiving and in conjunction with Banner Sunday, GCU Lodge 302 will be collecting non-perishable food items the weekend of November 19/20. Boxes will be situated in the vestibule. The food drive will benefit St. Mary Hospitality House operating out of Holy Spirit Church in Parma. (Please check labels on your donations to ensure they are not beyond the expiration date.) A lot of input was received at last weekend s parish meeting. The Advisory Board will meet on Tuesday, 7:00, to begin sifting through the suggestions and forge ahead with some direction, especially in the area of getting more involvement from parishioners in the age group. Marilyn Percic has accepted the invitation to serve on the board. She takes the place of Linda Szucs and will begin her term of office on Tuesday. Please remember all of the sick/suffering in your prayers, especially Lea Varner (University); Charlotte Picha (Danbury Senior Living; rehab); Mary Jane Dietz (Greenbrier Healthcare; rehab) and Janet Petruno (home). Note: Lea is recovering from injuries sustained from that accident in Chagrin Falls that killed her nine-yearold granddaughter Carmella (she was buried this past Monday). Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Lea (Tom Deka) and her family during this time of sadness. We also extend parish sympathies to Luke (Lisa) Macik and family. His brother Matthew died recently of cancer at the age of 60. He lived in the Pittsburgh area. Don t forget to change your clocks on Saturday night and get that extra hour of sleep as we fall back with the end of daylight savings time.
4 It s time for another First Fry Day Fish Fry. Serving is from 4:00-6:30. The Blue Plate Special will be stuffed cabbage. Carryouts are available. Volunteers are needed from 1:30 on through clean-up. The BLESS Women s Group will meet on Monday, 7:00, in the Education Center. Sandwich making will take place on Saturday, 9:30, in the Education Center. The 50/50 Club Grand Drawing and Banquet is set for November 18. Reservations need to be made by contacting your captain by November 6. All member dues and guest tickets must be paid for by that date. GCU Lodge 302 will hold their quarterly meeting after liturgy next Sunday in the Activity Center. We welcome into the Catholic Church and Community of Believers, John Michael Surso, son of John and Megan, who was baptized, confirmed and fully initiated at last Saturday s liturgy. The Ladies Auxiliary invites everyone to a Wine Party Social in the Activity Center on November 12. Doors open at 7:00. Attendees are asked to bring a bottle of their favorite wine and an appetizer to share. Paper products and wine glasses will be provided. For more information and to RSVP contact Auxiliary President Carrie Hotaling at Your Weekly Offering October 23, 2016 Sunday: 12 Student Envelopes: Cash: Candles: Total: $3, $3, Have you remembered St. Joseph Church in your Will and/or Trust? Communion will be taken to the sick/shut-in on Friday between the hours of 9-2. The sanctuary lamp will burn during the month of November in memory of Dennis Sobodosh. The St. Joseph Outreach will gladly accept any surplus Halloween candy. They will share it with the men at the homeless shelter in Downtown Cleveland. (Place your treats in the peanut butter and jelly box located in the vestibule.) A Pumpkin with a Purpose I am a Jack O Lantern My lights will shine so bright For I m a Christian pumpkin My symbols tell what s right. The story starts at Christmas My eyes are like the star That shone on Baby Jesus And wise men saw from far. My nose is like the cross On which our Savior died To set us free from sin We need no longer hide. My mouth is like a fish The whole wide world to show That Christians live in this house And love their Savior so! My color, it is orange Just like the big bright sun That rose on Easter Day Along with God s own Son.
5 A Halloween costume party is a great way to celebrate. The original historically correct Catholic purpose for dressing as death, devils, darkness, skeletons and later as witches, was to mock the evil. Its purpose was to cut the powers of darkness down to human size and mock them. This follows the Biblical example of the Lord in heaven who laughs at evil. (Psalms 2:4) Christians must do as God does, for laughter deflates the power of evil. Partying, with pranks, games and clowning, can all be used as reminders that the Christian road-show-of-life should be filled with laughter as well as tears. Healthy Christians should partly party as they make their way to heaven. For remember, St. Francis de Sales once said, A saint who is sad is a sad saint and St. Therese of Avila added, From somber, serous and sullen saints, deliver us, O Lord! Adults, as well as children, should face the Halloween darkness together. Telling spooky stories and leaning on each other helps little ones confront the unknown. It also encourages the development of faithful endurance. Then, by explaining that scary stories are only stories, evil is revealed to be essentially powerless and conquerable.
