Those who opposed the veneration of Holy Icons claimed that the honor shown to icons was equal to idolatry and that the making of icons violated God s commandment against graven images. St. John of Damascus and St. Theodore of Studion, claimed that the icon is not a graven image of the invisible God, but a living witness to the central fact of the Christian faith that the Divine Son of God, Light of Light and True God of True God, came down from heaven and was Incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. (Nicene Creed) If indeed, for us men and for our salvation, the divine Word of God became flesh as the Apostle John has said (John 1:14), then this man Jesus Christ is indeed the Icon of the invisible God as the Apostle Paul has said (Colossian 1:15). For according to the Lord Himself, he who has seen Him has seen the Father. (John 14:9) The Son of God, invisible and eternal, has taken on the visible form of man. He, therefore, can be depicted in a human form.

(All sessions will be held in the choir loft immediately following the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts which begins at 7:00.) Second All Souls Saturday The second All Souls Saturday is this week. The 9:00 Requiem Liturgy will be followed by a Panachida (prayer service for the dead) and the reading of the Hramoty (names of our deceased family members and loved ones). Forty Days for Life started on March 6. In conjunction with this we will once again offer the rosary prior to the weekend liturgies for the intention of the unborn. Consider attending a weekday Lenten Service. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings you can participate in Lenten Devotions (a half hour in duration with Supplication to the Blessed Sacrament on Monday and a sermon on Tuesday and Thursday). The evening opportunities include the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts on Wednesday and Friday (this is a combination Vesper/Communion Service sung with special Lenten melodies).
4 We enter into week number two of our Lenten Fish Fries. Lunch is served from 11:30-1:00. You can grab dinner between 4-7. Carryouts are available. Help spread the word by telling your friends, co-workers and family members! Make sure to patronize a meal or two. (We know for most of you there s a fish fry closer to home, but with all the competition out there we can use your business!) The Week Ahead The A-OK Club will meet on Monday at 7:00. The Men s Fellowship/Book Club will meet on Monday at 7:00 in the Education Center. The Men s Club will meet on Tuesday at 7:00. Sandwich making will take place on Saturday at 9:30 in the Education Center. Breakfast Fundraiser The Garfield Heights Knights of Columbus is holding a breakfast to benefit our ECF Program on March 24 right after liturgy. The menu includes scrambled eggs, sausage, all you can eat pancakes, juice, coffee and tea. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children ($25 max per family). Serving will be until 1:00. ABOUT THE TALK (from Mother Cecilia): Contemplative prayer may sound like something that s only for monastics, but it s not. We re all called to this type of prayer, but I find that many people have misconceptions about what it is or worry about doing it right. I would like to share with you what I have learned and the joy I have found in it. The Ladies Auxiliary would like to thank everyone who patronized last Sunday s Pasta Dinner. Spiritual Reading The parish library, located in the choir loft, is loaded with excellent spiritual reading for your Lenten consumption.
5 Iconographic Perspectives Byzantine icons preserve an austere and other-worldly appearance. In general the faces are gaunt, representing the popular idea of holiness, namely, strict asceticism such as was traditionally associated with severe fasting. The Eastern monastic fasting is still very difficult by Western norms: nothing may be eaten that comes from an animal. That ruling alone excludes milk, butter, eggs and cheese as well a meat. Vegetable and cereal products, with olive oil as the chief cooking agent, were the standard Lenten fare. Besides favoring gauntness of features, the iconographers paid scant attention, by and large, to perspective. It did not seem to disturb either the artist or their patrons if the large center figure was surrounded by small figures of angels, saints or secondary characters. Sometimes a whole scene in miniature was depicted at the side or above the icon s main characters. Because so many Byzantine icons saints looked almost the same most men, for example, were bearded and gaunt of visage it became customary to mark the identity of the figures with letters usually abbreviations of the saint s names. The most common place for these letters was beside the head. Usually the first few letters (cfr. Penn.) or the first and last letters (cfr. Pa.) served as the abbreviation. Sometimes the name was written out vertically at the side and often the letters of the full name were combined in curious monograms that shortened the space needed. Students of iconography prefer to see great symbolism in the colors used by the artists. Everyone seems to agree that a flat gold background, very frequent in icons, represents the richness and splendor of heaven. Very often, instead of shading the color of a garment to show folds, the outline of the folds will simply be done in gold. Saints heads are often surrounded with an aureola or golden halo and frequently between the inner and outer rings of the halo, intricate filigree work appears. In the course of time many icons of popular veneration were crowned with golden diadems and jewels were imbedded in the crowns and clothing. Sometimes the whole image was covered with gold and only the face and hands of the original painting were allowed to appear.
