2 Living the Word of Christ Together Pastor: Deacons: Office Administrator: Rectory Phone: Office Phone: Fax: website: Father Bruce Riebe Bill Fredrick, Robert Kirschner Michele Wiltshire Sheep and Goats What do the sheep and the goats in today's Gospel have in common? Both are believers. Both claim to be followers of Jesus. They have pledged allegiance to Jesus. Both have seen people in need. Both did not recognize Christ in the needy. This is why both groups ask the same question. "Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, ill, or imprisoned?" Both are surprised when they discover that Christ was the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the ill, and the imprisoned. Things have a price and can be for sale, but people have a dignity that is priceless and worth far more than things. With so much in common, why is one group (the sheep) blessed by the king, and the other group (the goats) condemned by the king? This is an important question when we consider that throughout Matthew's Gospel Jesus has never spoken of dividing people into two groups, nor has He said anything about judgment, nor about His identification with the needy. At no place in the Gospel does Matthew specify what people, who claim to be followers of Jesus, should or should not do. So, when we arrive at this section of the Gospel, everyone is trapped. However, we need to remember that Matthew has been constantly concerned with the theme of righteousness, which goes beyond the mere observance of religious or societal law. Righteousness is understood as the right way to act as a follower of Jesus. The irony here is that nowhere in the Gospel does Matthew specify exactly what a believer should or should not do. The only guide Jesus presents is love. But of what does an act of love consist is never specified. What is so surprising in today's Gospel is that Matthew, after 25 chapters of text and five long sermons, finally gives some concrete examples of what righteous behavior consists. Righteous behavior consists of feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, comforting the ill, and visiting the imprisoned. Both sheep and goats suddenly discover that it was in loving others and in serving their needs that they were loving and serving Jesus. This is a surprise for both groups. We already know how the story ends. What all people have in common is human dignity. The sheep recognized the human dignity of others, while the goats did not. Whoever neglects basic, common human dignity is condemned by Jesus - even if they keep all the religious and societal laws for they are not righteous, they do not behave according to God's will. Imagine that judgment is taking place now. Determine where you fit in.

I was hungry, and you formed a humanities club and discussed my hunger. I was imprisoned, and you crept off quietly to your chapel in the cellar and prayed for my release. I was naked, and in your mind you debated the morality of my appearance. I was sick, and you knelt and thanked God for your health. I was homeless, and you preached to me the spiritual shelter of the love of God. I was lonely, and you left me alone to pray for me. You seem so holy, so close to God, but I'm still very hungry, and lonely, and cold. As gloves are to a surgeon's hands, so are Christians in service for God. It is actually "God's hand" doing the work. We are but used by him and therefore have nothing to boast of.

The Flu You may have the flu if you have some or all of these symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting. Most people with the flu have mild illness and do not need medical care or antiviral drugs. If you get sick with flu symptoms, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people except to get medical care. If, however, you have symptoms of flu and are in a high risk group (young children, people 65 and older, pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions) or are very sick or worried about your illness, contact your doctor. The Center for Disease Control recommends that people at high risk for complications should get antiviral treatment as early as possible, because the benefit is greatest if treatment is started within 2 days after illness onset. If you have the flu, stay away from others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. If you must leave home, to get medical care, wear a facemask if you have one, or cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Wash your hands often to keep from spreading flu to others. Blood Pressures Next Weekend $3, $3, The Men s Club would like to thank everyone who made last Saturday s Night at the Races a success. Well over two hundred people were in attendance. The next A.C.E. program is Monday, 7:00, at St. Matthias in Parma. Father Ernest Fallardeau SSS, will preside over an Interfaith Harmony Week Prayer Gathering. Father is a leader in interreligious collaboration. Refreshments will be served and a free will offering taken. Contact our A.C.E. representative Barbara Fortlage for more information ( ).

5 PARISH INFORMATION As Jesus Would Do One afternoon three children entered a flower shop, two boys and a girl. They were about nine or ten years old, raggedly dressed, but clean. One of the boys took off his cap and came up to the owner and said, "Sir, we'd like something in yellow flowers. "There was something about the three that made the owner think this was a very special occasion. He showed them inexpensive yellow spring flowers. The boy who was the spokesman shook his head. "I think," he said, "we'd like something better than that. "Do they have to be yellow?" asked the florist. The boy answered. "Yes, Sir! You see, Mickey would like them better if they were yellow. He had a yellow sweater and he liked yellow better than any other color." The man asked, "Are they for his funeral?" Choking up, the boy nodded. Pointing to the girl, he said, "She's his sister. He was a swell kid. A truck hit him while he was playing in the street." The other boy added, "Us kids in his block took up a collection. We got eighteen cents. Would roses cost an awful lot, sir yellow roses, I mean?" The man smiled, "It just happens I have some nice yellow roses here that I'm offering special today for only eighteen cents a dozen." Gee, those would be swell! Yes, Mickey would sure like those," one replied. The florist made up a nice spray with ferns and ribbons and asked where to send them. One of the boys said, "Would it be all right, Mister, if we took them with us? We'd kind of like to, you know, give them to Mickey ourselves. He'd like it better that way. The florist accepted the eighteen cents and watched them walk out of the store. He felt within his heart a warm glow of God's presence as he remembered the words of our Lord: "Even as you have done it to one of these little ones, you have done it to Me" (Matt. 25:45).
