The following paragraph summarizes what he observed. (During Respect Life Month, let us be mindful of those in distress in Puerto Rico as well as those affected in all areas hit by the recent hurricanes.)
3 October 22, 2017 Glory to Jesus Christ! Liturgy Schedule Altar Servers Lectors Greeters We are hosting the next A.C.E. (Adult Catholic Education program on November 9, 7:00, in the Activity Center. Sister Barbara Jean Mihalchick will speak on Theosis: The Journey to Union with God. St. Althanasius said, God became man so that man might become God. The process is called divinization (or Theosis). Sister Barbara Jean offers a clear explanation of what this means to ordinary Christians as well as concrete ideas for us to move along this path. Sister holds a Master s in Christian Spirituality and is a member of the Order of St. Basil the Great (Uniontown, Pa.). Refreshments will be served (contact Barb Fortlage at if you can donate something) and a freewill offering taken. Try and fit this into your schedule. Liturgy requests for 2018 will be taken starting November 1. (Next week s Byzz Line will contain details.) Baby items for the Myers family need to be dropped off in the playpen before the end of the month. We thank Fr. Jan Cizmar for his twenty months of ministry as Parochial Vicar. In the same breath we wish him well as on November 1 he begins his assignment as Parish Administrator at St. Emilian Church in Brunswick. Father shares the following departing words. Please remember all the sick/suffering in your prayers, especially Patricia Liniman (Cleveland Clinic) and Mary Jane Shaver (home).
4 Next Sunday GCU Lodge 302 is sponsoring Trunk or Treat in the parking area east of the Activity Center (at approximately 11:45). Children should meet in the atrium before proceeding outside. Halloween cupcakes, donuts and cookies will be served after liturgy in the hall (cider and coffee as well). For more information contact Diana Simpson ( ). The woman s BLESS Group will meet on Monday, 7:00, in the Education Center. The Men s Fellowship & Book Group will meet on Monday, 7:00, in the Education Center. Sandwich making will take place at 9:30 on Saturday in the Education Center. November 6-10 is the annual fall clean-up at Holy Spirit Cemetery. All decorations will be thrown away (except for winter wreaths). If there is something from your family members gravesite that you wish to save, please remove it by October 31. PartyLite jar candle and flameless Smart Scent orders are being taken through November 5 (in the hall after liturgy the next two Sundays or by contacting any Ladies Auxiliary member). Try and plan your Sunday meal on November 5 around the Ladies Auxiliary Soup/Salad/Chili Luncheon. Serving begins right after liturgy. One trip through the line is $6 for anyone 12 and older ($2 for seconds). Children ages 4-11 are $3. A variety of options will be available including vegan and gluten free. Much gratitude to all the other volunteers who assisted including the ByzanTEENS who served as escorts. Twelve individuals eighty years of age and older were honored.
5 Euthanasia is a crime against life and a grave violation of the law of God. (34) It is defined as an action or an omission which of itself or by intention causes death, in order that all suffering may in this way be eliminated. Euthanasia s terms of reference, therefore, are to be found in the intention of the will and in the methods used. (CDF, Declaration on Euthanasia) From this definition, it is clear that an advance directive that requires withholding oral food and water when they are not physically burdensome, solely for the purpose of causing death so that suffering may be eliminated, contains both an intention of will and a method that constitute euthanasia. (John Paul II, Life-Sustaining Treatments and Vegetative State) The primary argument in support of euthanasia is based on a death-focused conception of autonomy in which the freedom of self-determination includes the freedom to choose to be killed, and meaningful human dignity...consists in the ability to control one s own life and death and to determine the manner of one s demise. (William E. May, Catholic Gioethics and the Gift of Human Life) This notion of autonomy purports to be expansive and noble, but in reality it is based on elitism and fear, confining and debasing all those involved. Euthanasia advocates conceal this fact by using euphemisms that blur distinctions between euthanasia and assisted suicide to make the acts seem more palatable. For example, physicianassisted suicide is now called aid-in-dying, and both it and euthanasia may be referred to simply as assisted death or assisted dying. (Menzel and Steinbock, Advance Directives, Dementia, and Physician-Assisted Death ) But no word has the power to change the reality of things. (John Paul II, Evangelium vitae) The need to disguise these acts merely confirms their moral depravity. We must have the courage to look the truth in the eye and to call things by their proper name, without yielding to convenient compromises or to the temptation of self-deception.
