Fr. Joseph moved in a week or two after me. With us there are two seminarians and a missionary young man. The two seminarians are Javier from the Archdiocese of Washington DC and the other is Sagato, from the island of Samoa and finally there is a young man, Joshua who is doing a time of missionary work. All three of them are part of the Neo-Catechumenal Team in the State of Minnesota. So in the rectory we have a beautiful atmosphere where we have common meals (mostly lunch) prayer and leisure time together. By now it seems everything came together thanks to many generous people who contributed to the work. Many people expressed to me how happy are they to see the rectory used for its purpose. The only thing we have to work on is the Chapel. I have approached St. Patrick Guild to give me some proposals but I have to wait until we have some quotes. Up to now we kept all the expenses as low as possible not to be a burden on our finances. My goal for the chapel is to do it beautiful but at the same time we cannot spend a lot of money. Later in May we will have an open house so that anyone who wants to visit the rectory is welcome to do it. We have many activities and events coming up in the new month of March which it will reach the climax with the celebrations of the Easter Tridium. The Holy Hour on Thursday is going very well. As you know it is from 6-7pm and during this hour we expose the Blessed Sacrament and pray evening prayer and I do some reflections from Pope Francis new book God s Name is Mercy. After, we do some time of prayer in silence and finish with the benediction. This is a good time of prayer in our beautiful church. I describe prayer as a fresh air in our life that we need to continue our journey of faith. My wish is to have the Blessed Sacrament more available for everyone. On March 15 at 10:30am we will have a Healing Mass with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. 3 Parish & Community Events ==FROM THE PARISH ADMINISTRATOR S OFFICE== You will notice today that we have listed individuals and families who have joined the parish since January. We want to let our parish community know of our new members. We will print the names of new members once a month. Please welcome them into our community! Our parish community welcomes the following individuals and families who have become members since January 1: Callistus Lian and Vung Sian Lun Cing Jerome Saw Lone Irene Moris Bosco Poe and Baw Meh MuMu and Nilwin Tint Thang Sian Thawn and Man Sian Huai Global Solidarity Sunday: Next Weekend Next weekend is Global Solidarity Sunday in our archdiocese. The theme is Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. This is a unique opportunity to share the goodness of the Lord in solidarity with your brothers and sisters overseas. We are invited to offer gifts of support by contributing to a special collection for four global initiatives designated by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Please be as generous as you are able and support your brothers and sisters overseas. The 4 initiatives supported by the U.S. Bishops are: the Church in Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa and humanitarian activities of Catholic Relief Services. Our maintenance crew and custodial staff is amazing! Ron Gates and Jenaro Vera have been at St. Bernard s for many years. They faithfully keep our facilities in good working order. When the grade and high schools were in full use by the parish, there was a larger maintenance/custodial crew but it shrank after the closings of the parish schools. However, the parish still has the same amount of square footage to maintain. The charter school takes care of its own janitorial needs but our maintenance staff does needed repairs. When it snows, they keep the sidewalks clear. They also take on special projects. They were instrumental in getting the rectory renovated by working on plumbing and other repair type projects. Besides Ron and Jenaro, Say Mo and Kye Meh keep our parish office, rectory and church clean. We are grateful to all of them for their hard work. You can mark your calendars for Sunday, May 22 after the 10:30 Mass for an open house for the renovated rectory (from 11:30 2:00). More to follow. We are developing a new website. The host company is specifically Catholic so there will be more links to Catholic information. We hope to keep it more updated and have more pictures of things going on around the parish. It should be launched in late March. We will keep you posted on that as well. The website will still be stbernardstpaul.org so at some point you will notice a difference when logging in. 4 Sacraments Call the Parish Office to make arrangements (651) Anointing of the Sick This Sacrament is to be celebrated when a person is suffering from a prolonged illness or when a person s condition becomes serious. Communion for the Sick & Homebound Please call the Parish Office to make arrangements. Baptism of Infants It is recommended that parents who wish to present their child for Baptism make arrangements several months before the due date, as the Church asks that children be baptized within a few weeks after birth. Parents should contact the Parish Office to meet with a priest. Baptism of Older Children & RCIA To become a full member of the Roman Catholic Church, contact the Parish Office. Marriage Preparation Couples anticipating Christian Marriage need to contact the Parish Office at least six months prior to the wedding date they desire. After a pre-nuptial interview with a priest, a specific date will be set. Marriage preparation classes are required. David Neira (651) When I was first in parish work, I remember the parish priest talking with the schoolchildren about the topic of Lent and prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. He asked them if any of them knew what fasting was. After a very long wait, one student raised his hand and said, "It is what I do when my Mom is mad at me. I run really fast!" The adults in the assembly burst into laughter. Laughter is good. However, the Lenten devotions of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are very serious practices for us as we prepare to celebrate the Easter mysteries. As our catechumens prepare for the Easter sacraments, we are called by the Church to model what it means to be a Catholic Christians. We are called, especially during this Lenten season, to pray, fast, and give from the wealth we have to those who need our assistance. This season is not merely a season of obligation to act more intently as God calls us to act; it is a season of opportunity to practice the foundation of our faith more attentively: prayer, fasting, almsgiving Faith Formation Dear Parents of Faith Formation, Please remember to sign and return the permission slips for the safe environment classes. They ought to be returned by March 13th. Please contact the parish office with any questions. Thank you. Please pray for our adult catechumens who will be entering the Church at the Easter Vigil. 5 Continued from Page 2 From Fr. Ivan s Desk This past week I have started to visit our neighborhood, house by house with the seminarians. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are good days for us from 5-7pm. We started with Woodbridge and Galtier Streets and a good number of people welcomed us, some who are parishioners, others not. The last thing, I want you to continue to pray for our Catechumens who will be baptized in the Easter Vigil. God Bless and have a good Sunday. Fr. Pope Francis invites the universal Church to join in this 24 hour world-wide celebration of the Lord s mercy. Come back to Confession in the Year of Mercy! Friday, Noon 1:30 p.m.: Private prayer and penance services for priests. Friday, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Noon: Both sites will host round-the-clock confessions for the faithful. Annual St. Bernard s Volleyball Tournament We are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual St. Bernard s volleyball tournament will begin on Saturday, April 2, from 9:00 am-9:00 pm. in the small gym. Facts you need to know: 1. This tournament is open to ALL ages. 2. $50 (per team) registration fee is due at time of registration players on a team. 4. Our prayers, thoughts and deepest sympathy are extended to the friends and family of Mr. Rollinger. May he rest in eternal peace. His funeral was Friday, February 26.
