In the midst of the political complexity surrounding immigration in this country I am very pleased that the social service arm of our diocese, Catholic Charities of the East Bay (CCEB), is fully engaged. They have attorneys, law students, accredited paralegals, teachers and counselors providing legal, resettlement and employment services to very needy refugees and immigrants, our neighbors. On Ash Wednesday I was happy to hear their fine work highlighted on a national NPR news broadcast. Parishes can reach out to CCEB to connect parishioners who need legal help by calling Maciel Jacques, Legal Services Program Coordinator, at (510) Cardinal Sean O Malley is co-chair of the US Bishops Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development. He reminds us, Immigration is not primarily a political problem, but rather a deeply human and profoundly moral challenge facing our nation. Catholic social services provide one of the refuges for those grappling with these very human challenges. These challenges are world-wide. Speaking on the Italian island of Lampedusa, at the borders of Europe, Pope Francis said We have lost a sense of responsibility for our brothers & sisters. We have fallen into the hypocrisy of the Priest and the Levite whom Jesus described in the parable of the Good Samaritan: we see our brother half dead on the side of the road and perhaps we say to ourselves, Poor soul and then go our way. His words resonate in our part of the world as well. I invite all to join voices with the California bishops: We call on Congress and the President to work together toward a more comprehensive response to the humanitarian crisis of a broken immigration system. We will work with the California Congressional delegation and the President to accomplish that goal.

The Parent Association underwrites programs that enrich the students lives at the Madeleine and further its mission to provide a quality Catholic education to SMM families and the broader East Bay Community. Please consider attending the event (forms are available at either entrance) or donating an item or service. The best donations come from your personal contacts. Do you own a business, a restaurant or vacation home? Do you have a special talent you want to share? Do you have a connection to a local business that could donate something that most would find attractive or valuable? Please consider these ways to contribute to the success of the auction and the enrichment of our children's education.

5 Noteworthy Elsewhere Peace & Social Justice St. Thomas Aquinas Lecture by Fr. Michael Morris, O.P. Wednesday, March 7:30 p.m. Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology 2301 Vine St., Berkeley (888) dspt.edu/aquinaslecture2015 While the writings of Thomas Aquinas have been studied and celebrated for centuries, the legends of his life and the meaning behind the manner of his representation in art have attracted less attention. In an illustrated lecture, Fr. Michael Morris, O.P., DSPT Professor of Religion of the Arts, will present Saint Thomas Aquinas in Art and Legend: An Iconographic Study of the Angelic Doctor. The lecture will examine the iconography of the saint and explore the fables and facts behind the Church s most honored theologian. Due to limited seating, RSVP is required. To RSVP, please call (888) Experience The Joy of the Gospel Series March 11th, April 15th, May 6th Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose Mission Blvd., Fremont The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose will be hosting a series of five presentations on Pope Francis exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel. Sisters Ingrid Clemmensen, O.P. and Marcia Krause, O.P. will facilitate the event. Participants are encouraged to purchase a copy of the book before the presentations. The event will take place from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. in the Motherhouse Auditorium. Admission is a freewill offering. For more information and/or to register, please visit the website above. Global Fast for Climate Justice Catholics in more than 40 countries will spend a day this Lent fasting for greater unity and action around the issue of climate change. The Fast was launched by the recently formed Global Catholic Climate Movement. Individual countries will observe the fast on a designated day (the fast began with Peru on February 19 and will end with Botswana on April 4.) The day designated for the U.S. is March 16th. A prayer vigil will be held in Washington, D.C., and Members of Congress from both parties have been asked to join the fast to show climate change as a moral issue, not a political one. On the designated day, Catholics are asked not only to abstain from food, but to practice carbon-limiting behaviors: using public transport rather than cars; working from home; reducing electricity or water use. They are also asked to offer prayers for those who will suffer the most from climate change. Operation Rice Bowl Sometimes parishioners ask why we are sending money to assist the poor in other countries when there are so many in our own area needing help. CRS points out that 25% of the proceeds of Operation Rice Bowl remain in the Oakland Diocese. In 2014, $20,000 in grants were awarded to local organizations that work to alleviate hunger and food insecurity, including a $500 grant to our own homeless dinner ministry.

6 Faith & Spirituality Religious Vocations An excerpt from Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) Apostolic Exhortation of the Holy Father FRANCIS The Church s teachings concerning contingent situations are subject to new and further developments and can be open to discussion, yet we cannot help but be concrete without presuming to enter into details lest the great social principles remain mere generalities which challenge no one. There is a need to draw practical conclusions, so that they will have greater impact on the complexities of current situations. The Church s pastors, taking into account the contributions of the different sciences, have the right to offer opinions on all that affects people s lives, since the task of evangelization implies and demands the integral promotion of each human being. It is no longer possible to claim that religion should be restricted to the private sphere and that it exists only to prepare souls for heaven. We know that God wants his children to be happy in this world too, even though they are called to fulfilment in eternity, for he has created all things for our enjoyment (1 Tim 6:17), the enjoyment of everyone. It follows that Christian conversion demands reviewing especially those areas and aspects of life related to the social order and the pursuit of the common good. Western Dominican Province Discerning a vocation to the priesthood? Consider joining the Order of Preachers (The Dominican Friars) who have been setting the world ablaze with the Gospel message for nearly 800 years! Steven Maekawa, O.P. at (415) or vocations@opwest.org Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose Discern a possible vocation with the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose built on four values: Prayer, Community, Study & Ministry. vocations@msjdominicans.org Considering a vocation to the priesthood, deaconate, or consecrated life?
