1 Paul Weaver: Repertorium Familiae Caesaris - Introduction 1 REPERTORIUM FAMILIAE CAESARIS INTRODUCTION This Repertorium has four main aims: (1) to present a complete list of members of the Familia Caesaris numbered consecutively in chronologically arranged sections (2) to give for each member full references and texts of the primary epigraphic, literary and other sources (3) to give for each source precise dating details, where these are available, and in coded summary form, an analysis of the main categories of information it contains, under the headings of family relationships and other personal, career and epigraphic details (4) to add, where necessary, explanatory textual comments, references to modern literature and discussion of problematic cases. Members of the Familia Caesaris are defined as: (a) (b) (c) freedmen and slaves of the emperor freedmen and slaves of wives and other relatives of the emperor freedmen and slaves of (a) and (b) above. The names of those in Categories (a) and (b) are printed in bold at the heading of their respective entries, those in Category (c) in plain type. The term 'freedmen' is taken to include 'freedwomen'. The Repertorium is in two parts: (A) Freedmen (B) Slaves. Aurelius, Commodus, and of all the Severan emperors, including the Septimii Augusti liberti and all Augustorum liberti not included elsewhere Augusti liberti without nomen who are not included in Sections I VIII above Augusti liberti with non-imperial nomina Augustae liberti - freedmen of empresses and relatives of the emperor, in chronological order of patron Part B is divided into five broad sections as follows: XII XIII XIV XV XVI Caesaris servi (A) - Imperial slaves of the period Augustus to Nero Caesaris servi (B) - Imperial slaves of the period Galba to Antoninus Pius Caesaris servi (C)- Imperial slaves of the period M.Aurelius onwards including Augustorum servi Caesaris servi (D) - Imperial slaves who are otherwise undated Augustae servi - slaves of empresses and relatives of the emperor, in chronological order of owner In the headings of Sections XII XVI the term servi is taken to include vernae and all other forms of the slave indication. Within each section individual members are arranged in alphabetical order according to cognomen. Those whose cognomen is too fragmentary to be known or is missing are included at the end of each section. For each member the epigraphic testimonia precede the literary and other testimonia and are listed in numerical order of reference, beginning with CIL and followed by the other epigraphic collections in alphabetical order; the literary testimonia are arranged alphabetically by author and work. Where there is more than one example of a

3 Paul Weaver: Repertorium Familiae Caesaris - Introduction 3 given cognomen in a section, these are numbered (1), (2) etc. in the same order of reference as above, except that dependent freedmen and slaves of Augusti liberti, Caesaris servi etc. in Category (c) above are placed last in each group. Unless otherwise indicated, references are to CIL.
