1 A monthly publication of St. Luke s United Methodist Church - Kilgore, Texas LOVE GOD LIVE HIS WORD SHARE HIS GRACE September 2018 Issue 9 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God s will for you in Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 This past Sunday after church, I was responsible for getting food for my kids. Normally this is a huge undertaking. With three kids, they can never agree and always want something different. But I decided we were getting tacos. It is quick, simple and easy. For once they were all in agreement and happy with that decision. As we were riding home with the tacos in the front seat, my two year old decided to start chanting. I love tacos, I love tacos, I love tacos, is what kept reverberating from the back seat. When my other two children did not respond with enough excitement, my two year old turned and looked at them and said Guys, don't you love tacos? This then caused all sorts of laughter, and before I knew it the excitement had spread and I had three boys in the back seat chanting I love tacos. It amazes me just how excited my child got over something so simple and small. One little shell with some meat and lettuce was enough to get him so excited he was talking, and not just talking, but convincing others of the greatness too. I miss that kind of excitement. As an adult, we get lost in so many other things. There is always one more meal to make, one more mess to clean up, or one more job to do. We are so focused on the next thing that we forget to simply live in the moment and enjoy the tacos. As Paul was writing Thessalonians, he was addressing many issues, but in his closing remarks he challenges the church in Thessalonica to rejoice. In fact, he doesn't say rejoice when it's convenient, or when it is a big moment in your life. It doesn t say rejoice when you are healthy or doing well at your job, it says rejoice always. This means that at any moment in your life, not only do you have a reason to rejoice, but in fact you are called to rejoice. Paul says this is God s will in your life. What moments of rejoicing are you missing out on in life? Where are places that instead of finding excitement you just find the humdrum pace of life. My two year old showed me the best example of this when he was rejoicing for no other reason than he loved tacos. Life is worth living and God has given us reasons to rejoice. I encourage you to slow down, look around and find these moments of rejoicing in your life. 2 2 Vibrant Church Updates 8/13/2018 We are just over a month into the Vibrant Church Process and it has been a busy time. During the first several months, much of the work that takes place is behind the scenes work. It may appear that not much has happened since we decided to start this journey, but it only seems that way. Over the last month I have been working to create the teams that will start leading much of the process. These teams will be responsible for talking with the congregation about everything from communication, to worship and many other things in between. At this moment several of our teams are working to come up with times to meet, but I wanted to make everyone aware of who will be making up the teams for the Vibrant Church Initiative. The Vision Team will be working to help enunciate a deeper meaning to our phrase love God, live His word, share His grace. The members are Kay McKinley, Randy Gaut, Garry Mount, Andrea McGilvray, Trey Rathbun, and Sabrina Bagley. The Spiritual Formation Team is going to be looking at the Spiritual health of the church to find new and creative ways to improve our discipleship process. The members are Tracy Gaut, Misty Shipman, Amanda Gillen-Hall, Danny Harrison, Ginny Anderson, Karen Wilson, Misty Lewis and Kacey Holley. The Worship team will spend time in conversation with the congregation about what worship means and to find ways in which we can improve our worship experience. The team members are: James Vermillion, Dennis Ellis, Carol Brady, Carol Grimes, Steffen Jones, Pat Morchat, Lydia Rathbun and Veronica Sprayberry. The Communication team is going to look at all the ways we as a church communicate and find ways we can communicate more effectively. The team members are: Jennifer Powell, Kristi Boone, Anna Rohde, Sara Lugenbeal and Salena Jackson. The Hospitality Team is going to take a close look at how we welcome our guests and how inviting our campus is for people that have never been to St. Luke s before. The team members are: Richelle Rathbun, SyRena Witt, Chet Garner, Milton Frazier, Kathe Miller and Kathy Brown. If you have any questions about the process or any of the teams, let me know and I will answer them. Rev. Ben Bagley All VCI updates can be found on our website, We encourage you to visit our website regularly for updates and information about the VCI process.

4 4 HOSTS Volunteers The HOSTS (Helping One Student To Succeed) volunteers will be on the Chandler elementary Campus again this year. We need new volunteers for our team. As a HOSTS volunteer you will be assigned one child to read with through out the coming school year. Thirty minutes a week to make a difference in the life of a child. If you have 30 minutes a week to read with a child you will not only bless that child s life, but also your own! In today s world it is so little that we can do to help a child. Listen to what our volunteers have to say: I am starting my 6th year as a HOSTS volunteer. I wasn t sure I wanted to continue this year, but then I realized that the 30 minutes a week I give can change the life of the student I read with. When I first started, I thought my job was to teach them to read, but as time went on I realized it s so much more than that. Many of the children I have read with, this is some of the only one-on-one time they have to share, talk or just visit. Just when I think what I am doing doesn't matter, they will smile or their face will light up, and in that moment I know I am really making an impact in their life. That 30 minutes a week has a life changing impact for me and for each student I work with. -Denise Reinert Saturday Bread St Luke's Saturday Bread team represented our church in missions on July meals prepared, packaged and delivered. 144 were delivered to the homes of the recipients and the rest served to those who came to the church to receive them. We were sad to say goodbye to Ann Rosson who had been a faithful member of the team for many years. She will be hard to replace, since she regularly helped with all aspects of the mission -- preparation on Friday, cooking on Saturday and delivering a route. Our Super Star Volunteers were Mikki, Dennis and Matthew Ellis who delivered meals to two different routes since there were regular volunteers who could not attend. Misti Tuck brings young volunteers to help deliver so they can learn the importance of service at an early age. She brought her daughter Sadie, and her daughter brought a friend. As you can see, Sam Holley is involved in many aspects of service. He is a great asset in delivering the meals since he brings a smile to so many faces. "Don't I know you from somewhere" applies not only to the volunteers, but also to the recipients. Barbara Francisco has been a faithful volunteer for many years preparing and delivering the meals. She will always help in any task needed. Charlotte Rogers was great to volunteer to help prepare meals, serve the walk-ins, and complete the clean up. Susan Crawford surprised us as an answer to prayer to be the second set of hands for those tasks. She also lifted our mood with a few wonderful tunes on the piano. Forms are in the church office to fill-out or call Jan Hattaway ( ) for more information. Not pictured are Dee Arbuckle who has been a faithful volunteer for many years delivering a route with Brenda Culpepper. We thank First Presbyterian Church for sponsoring this ministry and allowing us to participate in being God's hands. Our next opportunity and the last time for 2018 is October 27. Please text or call Brenda Culpepper at to volunteer.

5 Missions & Evangelism 5 Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl Ministry of St. Luke s United Methodist Church has given away more than 500 shawls, baby blankets and throws (for our graduating seniors). They go out to members and non-members locally and throughout Texas and the United States. We meet weekly to create these shawls as a symbol of comfort, joy and peace that comes from the presence of God. Each member of our group prays for the recipient and the shawls are blessed by Rev. Ben before they are given out. There are three ways you can help with this ministry: Join our weekly group meetings. We can teach you to knit or crochet! Ask us for instructions and you can knit or crochet at home. Deliver the shawls when needed. This fall we are celebrating our 10th year and would like to begin a morning get together in addition to our Wednesday evening meeting. If you are interested in being a part of this ministry, join us for an organizational meeting at 10:30am, Thursday, September 13, in the. Contact Pat Sers ( ), Barbara Francisco ( ) or Jan Hattaway ( ) for more information. Newgate Mission St Luke's team served breakfast at Newgate Mission in Longview on Saturday, August meals of scrambled eggs, biscuits, sausage, gravy, milk and orange juice were served. Our turn to serve breakfast comes about 6 times a year. It is great to have volunteers to cook and serve and to bring God's love to those in need. Richelle makes sure there is enough food and it is purchased with funds from the Missions Budget. It's early, but it doesn't take long. We start cooking at 7, serve at 8 and leave before 9. It would be great to have enough volunteers just to mingle and talk to the recipients. To participate, contact Milton Hattaway. October 13, 2018 is the last opportunity in Pictures: Paul Johnston and Barbara Francisco cooking eggs. Danny Harrison and David Morgan looking good in their hairnets. Charlotte Reynolds cooking and serving. Sam Holley -- What you doin' Just goofing off?? Milton Hattaway and Paul Johnston watching the oven while it cooks the sausage and biscuits. The Visi- Evangelism Moments YOU WILL NOT FIND MY PEACE by engaging in excessive planning, attempting to control what will happen to you in the future. That is a commonly practiced form of unbelief. When your mind spins with multiple plans, Peace may sometimes seem to be within your grasp; yet it always eludes you. Just when you think you have prepared for all possibilities, something unexpected pops up and throws things into confusion. I did not design the human mind to figure out the future. That is beyond your capability. I crafted your mind for continual communication with Me. Bring Me all your needs, your hopes and fears. Commit everything into My care. Turn from the path of planning to the path of Peace. 1 Peter 56:6-7; Proverbs 16:9; Psalm 37:5 Taken from: Jesus Calling Enjoying Peace in His Presence

WALK TO EMMAUS A Weekend Spiritual Retreat The WALK TO EMMAUS is a 4-day event based on the Walk to Emmaus story from Luke 24: Scripture. (Following the crucifixion of Jesus, two disciples were walking toward the village of Emmaus, when suddenly Jesus joins them. But they did not know who he was. As Jesus walked with them He helped them to understand what all the Scriptures said about himself. Didn t our hearts feel strangely warm as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us? Luke 24:32 The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with a 72- hour short course in Christianity, comprised of talks by lay and clergy on the themes of God's grace, disciplines of Christian discipleship, and what it means to be the church. The course is wrapped in prayer and meditation, special times of worship and daily celebration of Holy Communion. The "Emmaus Community Team" made up of those who have attended an Emmaus weekend, support the 72-hour experience with a prayer vigil, by preparing and serving meals, and other acts of love and self-giving. Over 80 members of St. Luke s have experienced this weekend retreat, resulting in a life-changing relationship with God. If you are interested in attending one of the retreats, call Pat Thompson ( ), Garry Mount ( ), or Richelle Rathbun ( ). The weekends are held beginning on Thursday evening and end Sunday evening. Men s and Women s walks are held separately. Someone who has been on a walk will be your Sponsor (we can steer you to one) and guide you through preparation for attending. The next scheduled Walks will be held at Camp Gilmont, Gilmer, TX, on the following dates: Men s: October 4-7, 2018 Women s: October 11-14, 2018
