1 The VISITOR A monthly publication of St. Luke s United Methodist Church - Kilgore, Texas LOVE GOD LIVE HIS WORD SHARE HIS GRACE JUNE 2017 ISSUE 6 Dear Friends in Christ, Leo was quite a man; a true American hero even though you will never hear his name on TV. An Inuit Eskimo who lived his life off the land in the Alaskan Wilderness, he volunteered to fight in World War II. Because of his unique skills, he became a sniper. Alone, he was dropped off in one wilderness or another. From there he would find his way through the wilderness and undermine enemy command and control by killing officers of the Japanese forces. I ll never forget the scars on his legs caused by a Japanese machine gun he received while fleeing after performing his duty. Besides his medals and ribbons, his only reward for his heroics was that he was made Post Master in Beaver, Alaska, a small village nestled on the banks of the Yukon River. His challenges were not over, for Beaver was an Athabascan village and there was a history of war between them and the Inuit. Leo simply did not know how to give up, and he performed his duties in the midst of prejudice and occasionally outward hatred. It was in the midst of this challenge that Leo received his greatest reward. He fell in love with the love of his life, a beautiful young Athabascan woman. Their love was so strong that the community objections were ignored and they were happily married. Yet even in this, Leo would know hardship. After many years of bliss, his wife fell ill and died, leaving him alone once again. As horrible as those scars were, how beautiful was his face when he talked about her. One day I asked Leo, What shall I do if I am ever attacked by a Brown Bear? Pointing to my holstered Ruger.357 Magnum single action side arm, he replied, You have everything you need right there if you have enough faith. He told me that if I was ever charged by a Brown Bear I must stand tall, drawing my weapon, holding it at my side. He told me that a Brown Bear could travel at a fast pace through the brush, but if I stood there seeking to lock eyes with him, that about 15 feet from my position he would most likely stop, rise up on his hind legs, arms cocked, and begin to circle me for the fight. When he did so, I was to raise my weapon and shoot him in the chest. Leo said, You will knock him down. He went on to tell me that I must not shoot while he was down for he would panic and lunge at me. The bear would not understand what had just happen and he would find his hind legs and stand up again; when he did so, Knock him down again, after the third time the bear will not get up again. I thought for a moment. I am supposed to stand tall while the most powerful predator I would ever see charged me, only to stop and stand up and circle me for a fight? I knew that such a bear standing could rise to a height of eleven feet, weighing over 900 pounds, and I was supposed to shoot him once and wait patiently for him to stand up again? I asked Leo, What happens if I run? Leo simply smiled and very calmly replied, He will eat you. 3 THANK YOU The Family of Deedy Adams acknowledges with grateful appreciation the kind expression of your sympathy. Dear St. Luke s Compassionate Care, Thank you for providing lunch for our family and friends after our Mom s Memorial Service. We really appreciated your kindness and support during such a difficult time. Sincerely, Christi, Kirk, Jason, Jamie and families Thank You s Thank you so much for your generous donation to Rehab s Retreat. We appreciate it so much! Our ladies are making such strides spiritually and 7 of them are about to phase up. We are so proud of them. God bless you for partnering with us. Rehab s Retreat HELPING HANDS The Helping Hands of Kilgore Cart, located in the East Hallway of the church, is in need of groceries, toilet paper, paper towels, hygiene items non-perishable items, etc. for Helping Hands. Can you spare a sack? Just put it in the cart. Your gifts will be delivered to the Helping Hands Center on Martin Street. Thank you for Giving! Your recent contribution is gratefully acknowledged by Helping Hands of Kilgore. It will be used to help the needy. The Staff at Helping Hands The United Methodist Women (any that had ever been a part) presented to the church an apron made in 1955 by the ladies of that year who had embroidered their names on it. It has been given to St. Luke s as a historical memory from the family of Lexie Brame (now deceased), who was the current president when the apron was made. Kay McKinley, the 2017 president, had Dan Brown make a frame and it will be hung in the parlor as a remembrance of all the work and service ladies then and now make to our church. Many of you will remember the names of many on the apron. 6 6 A Goodbye with Mixed Feelings Sadly, many "last things" will be encountered in the next few weeks. This is the last article I will write while Rev. Darwood Galaway is the appointed pastor here at St. Luke's. It has been a blessing to work with a man dedicated so much to reaching out to others and bringing them to God's grace. I doubt any pastor of St. Luke's has ever been so determined to visit all of the members of our church in need on such a regular basis. It is this kind of heart that gives him the strength and love to care for his own parents now in his own house. It is obvious that he has taken seriously the call of Christ to love one another. It is never easy as a spiritual leader to maintain such a calling within one's own strength. This can only come from living in the Spirit. Pastor Galaway, Pastor "D", Rev. Galaway, Darwood all these have been used to address our pastor over the years. He has never been one to require a title of any kind, except that of "servant of Christ." He has proven himself to be just that. It has truly been an honor to serve Christ with Rev. Darwood Galaway. I wish Darwood and Lee a wonderful retirement, while knowing I will miss their presence here. It is with much love and respect that I say "goodbye" and repeat for Darwood and Lee the old Irish blessing: Red, White, & Blue and the Bagleys, Too! Join in as we celebrate! Our annual Red, White, and Blue brunch and service is scheduled for July 2 with a special twist this year! That will be our first Sunday with Rev. Ben Bagley and his family! Come be a part of the Red, White, and Blue Choir on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m in the Sanctuary. Gratefully, James

7 MORNING CIRCLE United Methodist Women The Morning Circle has been focusing their study on the Sex and Human Trafficking situation that exists in our nation and nations around the world. This billion dollar per year industry continues to plague our world because it is such a lucrative business for those who sell humans for profit! We are writing and have written letters to our Texas Legislatures, the Governor, and our Federal Senators and Representatives urging them to deal aggresively with this horrendous crime. We meet every second Tuesday of each month except July. Please join us this Tuesday, June 6, at 10:30am, in the Fireplace Room. We conduct our business, have a great program, plan our fund raisers, pray for our concerns, and fellowship with good conversation and end the morning with snacks and more fellowship. We welcome visitors. United Methodist Women PAM BESSER EVENING CIRCLE UMW Pam Besser Evening Circle met for our regular monthly meeting in May. A light supper was provided by Brenda Culpepper. Angela Thompson also provided our monthly devotional, combining several different devotionals about mothers into one in honor of Mother s Day. Brenda Culpepper did a program about mothers in the Bible. Brenda also gave an update on Rahab s Retreat. The girls staying there have full daily schedules including life skills classes, drug abuse classes, Bible study and parenting classes. They also have to help with the cooking and cleaning. We discussed several ideas of what to do for Rahab s and decided to make up baskets for Teresa to give the girls on their birthdays. The business portion of the meeting was conducted in which the minutes and treasurer s report for the previous meeting were approved. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, June 6th, at 6:00 pm in the Fireplace room. Don t forget to bring your items for the Rahab birthday baskets to the June meeting. All women are invited and invite a friend to come with you. Many, Many Thanks to so Many of You!! The Back Pack Ministry has been a blessing to over 80 students since January of this year. We will be back in business beginning with the 2017 Fall semester. In the meantime, the goal is to acquire enough funds to support the program for the school year - a total of 36 weeks. St. Luke s has established an account at the East Texas Food Bank located in Tyler (our source for the pre-packed food). Tax deductible donations may be marked for Kilgore ISD Packpack - #706B for the Kilgore ISD Back Pack Program established at the Tyler Food Bank. We plan to also reach out to the Kilgore community to help support this essential program. We are fortunate to be able to work through the Food Bank. Cost per pack per student each week is $4.50. Multiply that by 36 weeks, totals $ per student cost for the year. Then multiply that by 90 students and the cost for a school year totals $14, Our prayer is that this program will become a sustaining program for these students and those to come. Pray with us and God bless you for your support.
