A monthly publication of St. Luke s United Methodist Church - Kilgore, Texas LOVE GOD LIVE HIS WORD SHARE HIS GRACE July 2018 Issue 7 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the sun. Ecclesiastes 3:1 By the time you are reading this article, I am excited to say that I have had the pleasure of serving St. Luke s UMC for one year. It has been a year full of excitement, pain, joy and sadness. One of the first people I met when I came to St. Luke s was Mary Lamb. There was not a single person in this town that she didn t know and she could help you out with just about anything. Everyone I talked to defined St. Luke s as the place that Mary Lamb worked. I had the privilege of being guided by her for just a few short months before she became ill and passed away. As I did her funeral, I couldn t help but feel that an era was ending at St. Luke s. No longer would I walk into the office and be greeted by her latest quip or sarcastic greeting. This week, a plaque was placed in the Children s courtyard in memory of Mary and everything she has done for the church over the last several decades. As I think of my brief experience with Mary I remember the words of Ecclesiastes: There is a time for everything. the writer states. There is a time for laughing and a time for sadness. There is a time for rest and a time for activity. There is a time to look back and a time to move forward. We have been through many different seasons in one short year, but there is one thing I am confident about. We remember the past, we remember what makes us unique, we remember everything we have done, but we do it with an eye to the future. Mary would always tell me that the church work was never finished. We don t just get to sit back and say we have done enough, instead we are always working towards the future. 3 RED, WHITE, & BLUE JULY 1-10:00AM Family Center This Independence Day there s no better place to be than St. Luke s United Methodist Church. We are commemorating the day with our annual brunch and a special worship service that will remind us all of our proud heritage as Americans. Come enjoy brunch, patriotic music, and a special message. Join us! *No Sunday School FROM MARY S DRAWER BRAYING or PRAYING? A mule named Jim was being driven by his owner. When everyone got on the wagon, the driver yelled Giddyup, Jim. Giddyup, Sue. Giddyup, Sam, Giddyup, John, Giddyup, Joe. As the wagon started to move, one of the passengers said: When Jim is the only one there, why did you call all those other names? The owner replied, If Jim knew he was the only one pulling this wagon, he d never budge an inch. It takes teamwork, doesn t it? Everything goes a lot easier if people are working together to pull the load. When the work gets to be too much for one person, resentment can set in. Stubbornness can develop. People will sit on their haunches and refuse to do one more thing. All because we ve forgotten how important it is to be in something together. When a mule team is in the harness, it s not too helpful if one mule thinks he is more important than another. When the team is pulling together, however, there is almost nothing the team can t accomplish. If that is true of a team of mules, how much more true is it of the church? Christians do not live or work in isolation, but as a team. The apostle Paul describes the church as a body in which all parts work harmoniously together for the common good. Perhaps it s time to stop braying, and start praying. We will have one combined worship service at 10:30am on Sunday, July 15. Plan to stay after and participate in the church conference to vote on the VCI prescriptions. * No Sunday School PRAYER Loving God, help us to be sensitive about the way we can ease the burdens of others. Thank you for putting us in the harness with others who are eager to serve you. AMEN The following groups are not meeting this month: Hilltoppers United Methodist Women Methodist Men Chancel Choir We will be kicking off the new school year with a Block Party. Join us for lunch, games, and water fun. Don t forget to bring your swim suit and a towel. These groups will be meeting again in August 3

ZOE - The Dream One of the first tasks new members complete when they join a ZOE group is the creation of their Dream chart. Most orphans and vulnerable children entering the ZOE empowerment program face a daily struggle to survive; there is neither time to think about the future nor reason to hope for something better. But through ZOE and your partnership, the children learn to imagine a new life and prepare to make it a reality. The ZOE program facilitator leads members through an exercise called the Dream process where they examine their current situation and then set their goals. After considering their family s hopes and needs, the youth who is considered the head of the household and is the primary member of their empowerment group creates a poster of responses to a standard set of questions. This youth then presents the Dream to the rest of the group members who express support and give feedback, especially concerning the primary goal. These Dream documents help the program facilitators better understand the conditions of the children s lives so they can address specific needs or traumas suffered. The family keeps a copy of their Dream, often displaying it in their home to provide daily motivation as they strive to create their new life. As they progress through the empowerment program they will often update their Dream. SATURDAY BREAD July 28-8:00am Once a quarter St. Luke s participates in the Saturday Bread program at Kilgore First Presbyterian Church. Our volunteers help make meals for shut-ins, lower income wage earners, seniors and anyone who finds themselves in need in our community. The team also delivers meals and helps to serve meals at the church. You are encouraged to join us for this mission opportunity. Contact Brenda Culpepper for more information. Help us empower children to fulfill their dreams. As a congregation we have committed to an annual financial gift to ZOE. If you would like to help us meet this commitment please make a donation to the Mission Fund. Make sure to mark your gift Missions-ZOE. HOLY HUDDLERS Come Eat and Fellowship with Friends All are Welcome - 6:00pm Walk to Emmaus and Luke 24:13-35 My Walk to Emmaus was in 1997 at LoneStar camp in the Northeast Community, Walk #23 where I sat at the table of Andrew. My name is Pat Thompson and I received such a great spiritual blessing on this weekend. I was so touched by my walk that upon returning I decided to start serving on Walk teams. On a Walk to Emmaus faith is replenished, grace is experienced and Christ in community is realized. The Body of Christ is renewed through the revitalization of church members commitment to Christ. I believe the Upper Room program can be an integral part of the Vibrant Church Initiative with the object being to develop Christian disciples who give their lives to sharing Jesus Christ with the World. We have started a reunion group that meets at the church in the Family Center on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 pm. In September we will begin meeting on the 1st and 3rd Mondays. We pray and discuss our spiritual journey. I invite you to come and see what we do in sharing Christ love. In Christ, Pat Thompson Upcoming Grace Emmaus Walks Men s Walk October 4-7 Women s Walk October For more information about Emmaus or to register for a walk, please contact Pat Thompson, thompson84@yahoo.com. 5 Chandler students benefit from the Backpack Food Program Chandler is currently 72% economically disadvantaged. We know that many of our students go home for the weekend and will not eat again until they return to school on Monday. On holidays, the concern is much greater. The last thing our second and third grade students should worry about is when and where they will get their next meal. Unfortunately, that is not the case. With the implementation of the backpack program, we have seen a change in our student s health and behavior. Before the program, Chandler staff had to struggle to meet educational needs due to the basic needs of our students not being met on the weekend. The recovery time for a hungry child is great; thereby, the academic gap for our economically disadvantaged students has continued to grow making it near impossible for them to show academic gains compared to their peers. Here at Chandler, we are thankful for the partnership with St. Luke s. The Backpack Program helps to ensure that children will have food for the weekend and return to school on Monday ready to learn. We thank you for your continued support and belief in our students. -Cindy Lindley MORNING - UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Our program for the June meeting was about the Holy Spirit, presented by Vice President Sharry Christopher. We want to share a synopsis of her presentation as encouragement together to see that God, indeed, acts in each of our lives. Over the years, I have developed three foundational convictions about the gift of God: 1. The Holy Spirit is God s personal presence 2. The Spirit is God loving us 3. The Holy Spirit is God s grace active in our lives Through the Holy Spirit, God is lovingly present and always active in our lives. But experiencing more of the Holy Spirit requires involvement. Spiritual practices make it possible to live every moment more deeply in the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is at work in our lives in every encounter in our daily work, in our communities, and indeed, throughout our whole universe. The Spirit of God always reaches out to us with love and grace in moments of beauty, love, rest, joy and newness. One way to begin the practice of noticing the Holy Spirit entails setting aside a block of time to pursue the following exercise: The Backpack food program has recently been awarded an $11,000 grant to continue their good work. For more information on how you can support this ministry contact Misty Shipman. 1. Think back over your life and make note of how the Spirit has been with you over the years. 2. Make a list of gifts of love and grace that you have received - significant moments when you have felt loved, cherished and valued; perhaps over a cup of coffee with a friend, an encouraging text message, help given by a stranger, a co-worker, a family experience. Mother s Day Out currently has openings for the school year which begins on Monday, August 27th. This year our days of operation will change from Wednesday/Friday to Monday/Wednesday. All of our classes are taught by two wonderful, loving teachers who have completed Safe Sanctuary training through the church and are CPR/First Aid certified. Please contact me at to discuss how our program can meet your families needs. In His Service, Misty Shipman In doing that, I came to a massive realization: the Spirit had been active in my life long before my conscious choice to become a follower of Christ. As noticing the activity of God s Spirit becomes a natural part of your everyday life, you will open yourself to experience the Holy Spirit in the here and now - which is just how God wants it to be. We just have to recognize that the Holy Spirit, the gift of God given to each of us, is at work in our lives and thank Him for the gift! *Excerpts from an article written by Trevor Hudson, pastor of a church in South Africa. 5

REMOVAL OF THE MAPLE TREE The Board of Trustees has been struggling for several years to find and repair the leak that kept the ground wet and puddled around our beloved Maple Tree growing in front of the Family Center courtyard. After some serious digging the past month, it was discovered that the main water line that feeds all our sprinkler system was under the tree and the roots had grown in, around and under the plumbing lines breaking the lines. The water lines were laid long before the tree was planted over the top of them. A decision had to be made: cut the tree down or somehow install new water lines? The cost of laying new water lines led to the decision that cost-wise it was best to remove the tree in order to repair the existing line. A difficult decision; but a necessary decision. A team of several St. Luke s men deserve our Thank You for their persistence in finding the problem and then having to make a decision to correct it with the most cost-effective solution. The repair on the line will begin soon and when completed we will be able to water the lawn again (in Texas, the only way to keep it green). Once that is accomplished, the lawn will be groomed and grass planted over the area dug up to work on the problem. Our HUGE THANK YOU to the team working on this situation: Mack Monday, Robert Ellis, Randy Gaut, Bill Bryant, Cody Sprayberry, Ed Aguilar, Tony Witt, Milton Frazier. In life, there are always decisions that have to be made that we all may not agree with - but they have to be made anyway. We pray that your heart be well with what had to be done. 6

SENIOR HIGH MISSION TRIP The senior high youth spent a week at SOS (Service Over Self) in Memphis. During our time at SOS the youth were able to work on Mr. Thomas house. Mr. Thomas is a Vietnam veteran who needed a new roof in order to get running water and electricity in his home. The lessons that we learned at SOS went far beyond roofing. I witnessed the youth grow in faith and confidence throughout the week. They realized that the relationships that were being built with our SOS staff, Mr. Thomas, and within our team were just as important as the roofing. I am so proud of the youth. They pushed past their fears and grew so much during the course of the week. I never heard one complaint from them while despite the heat. In fact, they were so focused on the task that I had to make them take breaks from the work. Thank you to Chet Garner and Kathy Brown for taking a week out of their busy schedules to volunteer for this week. This trip would not have been possible without them. -Misty Shipman Photos from this event are on the opposite page. CHURCH CAMP JULY 8-14 Our children and youth will be leaving for Church Camp at Lakeview on July 8. Please remember to be in prayer for our campers and counselors during this week of worship, fellowship, and fun. SUMMER SLAM Pre-teen Mission Trip I absolutely love going to Summer Slam mission trip! My favorite place to serve is Newgate. I loved meeting people there last year and was so excited to go serve there again! I got the best feeling of joy when we served breakfast, helped with VBS, and sorted clothing donations. I also liked hearing about how Newgate works and everything they offer to those in need. I also went to Lagrone's Chapel and we raked leaves, pine straw, cleaned out flower beds and picked up sticks. It didn't matter that I was dripping sweat and streaked with dirt, it felt so good to know we were helping make their church look nice. I love helping others and I had the best time at Summer Slam! -Kyleigh Lewis Your donations to Children s and Youth Ministries make opportunities like church camp and mission trips available. Thank you for supporting these ministries and the children and youth that benefit from them. Thank you to to our volunteers who helped on the Summer Slam Mission Trip: Robert & Sherry Ellis, Misty Lewis, Lindsey Bennett, & Sydney Chowdhury. 57

PIPE ORGAN HISTORY The pipe organ at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Kilgore was built in 1952 by the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company of Boston, Massachusetts, considered by many to be the finest organ builder of the 20th Century. It is of the "American Classic" school of organ building, meaning it is capable of playing all types of organ literature with equal success, from 17th Century North German, to 19th Century French, to the most recent publications by our American composers. It was designed by Roy Perry ( ), who was organistchoirmaster at First Presbyterian Church, Kilgore, in collaboration with G. Donald Harrison, the great president of the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company, and was installed by the Williams Family of New Orleans. Mr. Perry and the Williams Family worked for Aeolian- Skinner as the company's representatives in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi for many years, and their installations are among the finest instruments ever built by Aeolian- Skinner. Some of their other notable organ installations for Aeolian-Skinner in Methodist institutions include: Dallas - Highland Park United Methodist Church; Lovers Lane United Methodist Church; Perkins Chapel, SMU; Caruth Auditorium, SMU. Houston - First United Methodist. Wichita Falls - First United Methodist. Shreveport - Brown Chapel, Centenary College. New Orleans - Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church. During the seven years of the East Texas Pipe Organ Festival St. Luke's has hosted fourteen organ recitals played by fourteen different organists. Each one has commented on what a versatile instrument the Aeolian-Skinner is, saying "This organ can do anything." Audience members agree with standing ovations. This instrument is an important part of the worship experience at St. Luke s and we are excited to be able to continue to share it s power. When the organ returns it will be better than ever. Thank you for your continued donations and support through this process. PIPE ORGAN MEMORIALS & HONORARIUMS Bolded names have been added to the list in the last month. in memory of Birdie Barron.....
