1 The VISITOR A monthly publication of St. Luke s United Methodist Church - Kilgore, Texas LOVE GOD LIVE HIS WORD SHARE HIS GRACE JANUARY 2017 ISSUE 1 Dear Friends in Christ, Happy New Year! Making New Year resolutions is a very important tradition. Did you know that people who make these resolutions are many times more likely to actually make progress achieving their life goals. Jesus said, Knock and the door will be opened, seek and you will find, ask and it will be given to you. So just take a leap of faith and jot down several new year resolutions and debate your success next year. The celebration of the New Year has many direct correlations to our faith. There is a tradition that January 1st was celebrated with The Feast of the Circumcision. This celebration is centered around how Jesus was circumcised according to Jewish tradition that was passed down through Abraham. Circumcision was a response to the covenant God gave to Abraham. Spend a little time in prayer and then enter into a new covenant relationship with God. Remember that a covenant is a gift from God. That means you pray, let God put His promise on your heart, and then enter into that promise with your faith and commitment. The very idea of a new beginning is the very heart of our salvation. Knowing forgiveness is knowing a new day without something that has been a burden in your life. Make a resolution to actually accept the gift of a New Day from God. Paul wrote, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Have you ever put that to the test? Begin with prayer and open your heart to a great vision for your life. Have you ever felt you were worthy of something wonderful? If not, Why not? Everyone else God uses is just as ordinary as you are. Let go of the fear and seize the passion. Happy New Year Pastor Darwood FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY IS COMING! Financial Peace University, Dave Ramsey s nine-week Bible based financial course, is coming to St. Luke s UMC beginning in February. Our own Chris Crawford will lead. This is our opportunity to learn how s, when s, and where s--a knowledge to help us all. Make plans and watch for updates. PURSUANT TO SECTION 30.07, PENAL CODE (TRESPASS BY LICENSE HOLDER WITH AN OPENLY CARRIED HANDGUN), A PERSON LICENSED UNDER SUBCHAPTER H. 3 Scholarship Meeting January 5, 2017, 6:00pm Conference Room Attention all college students who are renewing their scholarships for the Spring 2017 semester, and any who are interested in applying: Scholarship applications are available in the church office and were due by December 19 th. Please have them turned in as soon as you can! Louisiana Relief Comments from Bishop Scott Jones Recently, I received a note of appreciation I want to share with you. Louisiana Conference Bishop Cynthia Harvey sent Thank you so much for the amazing ADDI- TIONAL gift to the flood relief efforts! I am grateful for many things but I count you and the Texas Annual Conference Family among the greatest gifts. Once again, the Connection is at its best. Bishop Harvey was responding to the second gift from you in the Texas Annual Conference to the flood relief efforts in Louisiana. We have contributed a total of $160,000 to our brothers and sisters there. The relief efforts have been massive in response to the storm that has been compared to Katrina. The Louisiana Conference has been a significant part of those efforts. While many organizations are involved, the Louisiana Conference has focused their resources to supplying Windows, Doors and Floors to the lost, least and last. The information applicants supplied to FEMA has been shared with religious and social service agencies to try to catch those who might fall through the cracks of the system. The conference disaster relief teams are partnering with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild. Once again the United Methodist are the last to leave when disaster hit. We are there to repair and rebuild alongside those in need so that we are in ministry with not just to. The effort is ongoing. For additional information or to contribute visit I add my thanks to you for your generosity and your deep commitment to our connection both locally, nationally and throughout the world. May God bless you. Classes to Merge For Sunday School Study The Pastor s Sunday School Class & The Rock will merge as of January 15 to do a study on Revelation at 9:30am in the Fireplace Room. We will begin the class study with breakfast. Watch for more updates and please note that anyone is welcome to join. 6 6 Children and Junior Choirs Resume on January 4! Church vans resume picking up the children from KISD and Sabine ISD schools All the C&J choirs will be working on new anthems and a spring program of singing and lots of instruments! 1. Singing in my church choir gives me an opportunity to express my love for the Lord. 2. Singing in my church choir is more than a hobby or an activity. It is a calling. 3. Singing in my church choir allows for a type of expression of praise to the Lord that could not be accomplished in any other way. 4. Singing in my church choir allows me to participate in the overall ministry of leading in worship, which is a joy and a priviledge. 5. Singing in my church choir and in other Christian choirs has given me many opportunities to share the good news of Jesus Christ in many settings, throughout my home country and in other countries as well. 6. Singing in my church choir and in other Christian choirs has implanted incredibly profound messages within my heart and soul through the lyrics of the songs that I have been able to sing. 7. Singing in my church choir and in other Christian choirs has allowed me to get to know so many wonderful people who love the Lord and have a heart of service. 8. Singing in my church choir allows me to participate in something that is so much bigger than my self. 9. I believe that singing praise to God is the closest thing to Heaven that I can experience on this earth. 10. I love to sing in my church choir and in other Christian choirs because of the incredible songs that God has inspired men and women to write, which then become part of my own spiritual journey.
