4 EDITORIAL I n June 2003, Hope Elizabeth Stout was much like any 12 year old girl. She was looking forward to a summer of swimming at the pool, trips to the mall and movies and her family s annual beach trip. A persistent pain in her knee changed all that and after some tests, she was diagnosed with bone cancer. Instead of a summer of fun, Hope began to undergo painful and lengthy chemotherapy treatments. Hope never lost her sense of humour or her optimism that she would beat this cancer. Unfortunately, the treatments did little to stop the disease from spreading and by November, Hope was confined mostly to a wheelchair. But then something magical happened and it changed many lives in the process. The Make-A-Wish Foundation visited Hope in November They told Hope she could have anything she wanted; to just name it. Hope thought for a few minutes and then answered: You know, I am lucky I have been to Disney World, swam with the dolphins in Cancun and go to the beach all the time. You say there are 155 kids on the waiting list? Well, my wish is TO GRANT ALL THEIR WISHES, ALL 155 OF THEM. And to do it just as soon as possible. Even though Make-A-Wish was faced with a herculean task Hope s wish would cost nearly $750,000 they sprang into action. A local company got the ball rolling with a $25,000 donation; the Charlotte Observer ran a December 19 story on Hope which local WBT radio personality Keith Larson picked up on during his morning radio show. He had Hope on for what is now a legendary interview; one that is replayed every Christmas; the Carolina Panthers went on a roll, winning game after game en route to the NFC Championship and a Super Bowl appearance and a mid January black tie, Rat Pack themed event was planned called appropriately, THE CELEBRATION OF HOPE. Appropriate because Hope pretty much planned the event; right down to the last detail. Unfortunately, she didn t live to see it. Hope Elizabeth Stout passed away on January 4, 2004, surrounded by her family and her precious kittens. After her death, donations poured into the Make-A- Wish office at such a fast rate that volunteers had to be brought in to count money and answer the phones. Children brought in the contents of their piggy banks; girls donated their babysitting money; a homeless man in Charlotte walked into the MAW offices and gave what little he had. He told the stunned volunteers, it isn t much but I want to help Hope. On Friday, January 16, the Celebration of Hope gala was held at the Westin in Charlotte, NC. Over 1,000 people attended the event and at 11:00 pm, emcee Keith Larson announced to the stunned crowd that $1,116,000 had been raised and the money was still coming in. All of the kids would have their wish granted. Hope s Wish had been fulfilled. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE B efore every New Year, plans and preparations are made to usher in the new lunar year. Most would also want to star New Year with new resolutions. For me, I would like to usher in the Year of Goat with a wish list. On this premise, my 3 wishes for the Year of the Goat for Pudu Rotary Club are listed below: 1. It is my hope that this New Year will foster greater wealth, happiness, prosperity and most importantly, harmony amongst our club members. There will be less misunderstandings and conflict between the members. 2. All the current issues and difficulties will be resolved 3. And a steady membership growth Last but not least, I wish everyone a wonderful year ahead. May the Year of the Goat bring joy, health, prosperity and peace to you and your family. Do not forget to support this coming Saturday s (7 March 2015) on the handing over of 2 fully equipped ambulances to St John Ambulans Malaysia. Have a good week ahead. Daisy Chiu President RY Hope Elizabeth Stout had inspired the beginning of the Hope Foundation Warmest Regards. PP Mike Tung Rotary Club of Pudu Page 4

22 ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NEWS Rotarian takes fundraising to new heights -- the summit of Mount Everest Joe Pratt, a former naval aviator, husband of 34 years, and father of two, sits on Mount Everest. Despite his longstanding interest in polio eradication, polio was not on Joe Pratt's mind as he prepared for a mid-april 2012 climb of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth. But that changed in late 2011, when the resident of Nottingham, New Hampshire, USA, participated in a polio immunization project in Pakistan with fellow Rotary member Steve Puderbaugh. Moved by the efforts of the Pakistanis to battle the crippling disease, and by the vulnerability of the young victims, Pratt reset the focus of his climbing adventure. Pakistan is one of three countries where polio has never been stopped (the others are Afghanistan and Nigeria). Pratt considered wearing a polio patch on his climbing outfit, as a tribute to those who had had polio. But Puderbaugh had other ideas. "My point was, 'Who's going to see that patch?'" recalls Puderbaugh. Instead, he suggested that Pratt dedicate the climb to raising funds for polio eradication. Pratt, a tall, lean 59-year-old Delta Airlines pilot who has been a member of the Rotary Club of Raymond Area for 28 years, says he "recognized it as a great idea" right away, and mentioned it to their Pakistani hosts at dinner. "It was immediately embraced by the Pakistanis," says Pratt, who had also climbed Mount McKinley and Mount Kilimanjaro among others. At first, the planners set a fundraising goal of $10,000, but later increased it to $29, a dollar for each foot of Mount Everest's height. And since Pratt's successful climb, his efforts have raised more than $40,000, not including matching funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His ascent, accomplished as part of a team of 23 Russians and one American, took five weeks. The climbers braved high winds and subzero temperatures, and occasionally passed the bodies of climbers who'd perished weeks or months earlier -- grim reminders of the perils of the adventure. In the end, only 12 members of the expedition reached the summit, the others having turned back. Rotary Club of Pudu Page 22
23 ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NEWS Pratt says he had a lot of motivation to keep going. "One of the many images in my mind was that of the little Pakistani kids -- kids who were healthy and hopefully will stay healthy," he says. "I would think, I want to quit, but these kids are depending on me." It took a little over a year to reach the $29,030 goal, with contributions picking up significantly last fall, after Pratt spoke to Rotarians from six Montana clubs. For them, Pratt's story had special meaning. "He's a mountain climber and we're in the mountains of northwest Montana," says Michael Hayes, a businessman and 19-year member of the Rotary Club of Daybreak Kalispell. "Several people are into mountaineering here." Hayes was also impressed with Pratt's selflessness, noting that he'd borne the entire $50,000 cost of his Mount Everest climb, never seeking any funding help. "We were also impressed that Joe Pratt, on his own time and his own dime, came out to speak to us," Hayes adds. "His trip didn't cost our club anything." Pratt gave two talks during his mid-october visit to Montana, attracting about $11,000 in donations from club members and area residents and $23,000 in matching funds from the Gates Foundation. "It was very heartening," says Pratt, a former naval aviator, husband of 34 years, and father of two. "I have given talks in libraries and other places. In one worst-case scenario, only one person showed up." Source: Lekan Oguntoyinbo, Rotary International Rotary Club of Pudu Page 23
