PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Members What a delightful evening last Monday, hearing stories of the past and the wonderful achievements of our early club members. Thanks to PDG Graeme for all his efforts to round up previous members and provided apologies from those that were unable to join us in person. To have 3 of out charter members in attendance was quite a coo! Our thanks to PP Michael Hunter (and Lesley) for providing a raft of memorabilia including photo albums, board minutes, bulletins and t-shirts modelled by our guest speaker no less! New Board members attended District Assembly on Sunday 29 April at The Kings School to be briefed on roles and to be kept up-to-date with Rotary policies and procedures. Those who attended included Lillias, Graeme, John, Sandy, Suzy, Jan, Fraser and Christine. Our Changeover will be Monday 2 July at TreeTops Avoca Beach Resort. District Changeover is scheduled for Sat 7 July at Hornsby RSL Club. Register by 27 June (See details on flyer below). A reminder to take advantage of the early bird registration for next year s District Conference to be held in Newcastle $200 for all events/ sessions. Accommodation extra (see flyer). 4 LAST MEETING AS RECALLED BY ROSEMARY ALLISON What a buzz as 39 people came together for a reunion of charter and former members in the large back deck of the Kincumber Hotel. From some of these former members came an exciting and amusing account of the club s 36 year history. With the first meeting of the formation group on 5 th April 1982, the club was chartered on 22 nd June 1982 with Bruce Dunlop, the Charter President. Charter members present this evening were President Christine welcomed charter members and guests PP Michael Hunter with his wife Lesley, PP Clyde Marshall and PP Ron Tesoriero. Other Guests present included PP Eric Perrett & partner Wendy, PP Derek Walter and Sue, PP Dave Richardson and Judy and PDG Jim Dowling and Helen and Alan Draper. There were apologies from PP Peter Gosling and Denise, PP Miller McCowan and Morag, PP Kari Arias, now in Finland, PP Clyde Barrett, PP Rod Williams, PP Sue Lane and Rotarians David and Shane Stuart, Patrick Webb OAM, Maria and Joe Murray, Ron Matthews, Col Douglas, Les Sparks and Ron Nicolle. We also received an apology from Jo Wishford (nee Rochford), Kincumber s first Youth Exchange student who went to Canada. Other guests included Dr Andrew Browning (back from 17 years of working in Africa so his children can attend Australian higher education facilities), Sue and Dean Groom (the parents of our potential Outbound Exchange student, Sarah), Lyn Davies, Sam Yamunarajam and Beverley Wilson. PP Michael Hunter our Guest speaker, spoke warmly, happily and emotionally about the early days of our club. He spoke of the club s efforts at fundraising the first one being for the Red Shield Appeal in July 1982, of their work at the Kincumber markets when they were held on the ground now occupied by fast food outlets, of many interesting vocational visits, of the first social at Putty Beach, of the project to build a teachers house for a Catholic Mission and the visits of people such as Father Chris O Riley. He mentioned the joining fee then of $25 plus the annual membership fee of $80. With great enthusiasm he told many stories, both past wins and past losses with great enthusiasm and humour from his 30 years involvement, too many to mention (a copy of his speech notes available). He still has an archive of banners and newsletters plus photo albums which he brought along to share. He also mentioned that the clubs first outward exchange student, Jo Rochford, has now been married for 26 years and has three children.

5 Other members, Ron Tesoriero, Derek Walter, Lindsay Cunningham (now on the board for the annual 5 Lands Walk) and Clyde Marshall shared amusing anecdotes from their happy times as office bearers and club members. The club acknowledged Jim Dowling s 90 th birthday with a rowdy rendition of Happy Birthday and a multi signed card. Fraser then continued the meeting as usual starting with the Raffle won by Michael Hunter and Derek Walter (who bagged the wine called Derek) followed by Heads and Tails won by Lindsay Cunningham. Derek Walter presented the club with a generous donation towards our Ship Builder s Memorial Project. Thank you Derek. Short reports from the various heads of our committees were then given. PDG Graeme Davis spoke eloquently, as always, of the growth in memberships and the ratio of women now compared to when the club began as an all-male club. Peter Rea updated us on the progress of the 4 Villages Walk, our signature event to be held Sunday May 6 th and the involvement of the model builders and others with a $5 Passport fee for contributing members of the public. Tina Latham discussed International projects: Menstrual Hygiene Kits, Days for Girls, Wheelchairs for Papua New Guinea. Sandy Hunt-Sharman told of the incredible number of activities she has organized for fundraising: Movie Nights, Avoca and Gosford Markets, Bowelscan Program with proceeds going to Coast Shelter, Cure Brain Cancer, the huge Hay Run and Radiotherapy scholarships among others. She has set up a small business networking group that meets in the KIncumber Community Hall, and so much more. John Heuston talked of our work for Youth: our Exchange students both outbound and inbound, Youth Leadership, National Science Forum, Science & Engineering event. Jan Brown provided information on our efforts for the Rotary Foundation and the support we have given to Dr Andrew Browning s hospitals, Days for Girls, swags and waterproof mattresses and for Coast Shelter. Finally, President Christine talked about us being a vibrant club as demonstrated by all the activities described by Directors and that as current members we stand on the shoulders of the giants who have gone before us. She indicated that the many Past Presidents that were in attendance were all recorded on the bars on the Presidential Collar that she wears with pride. She introduce President-Elect Lillias Bovell whose name will soon be added to the collar. The meeting ended with the singing of the National anthem. Rosemary Allison
