Debra C. Laranzer C. Shirlon C. Suzette M. In my opinion the first step towards Recovery is believing that it s possible. For years I thought that Bipolar Disorder was the ending of any possibility for a socalled normal life. I really identified myself with my Illness and felt that the rest of my life would be defined by that Illness. I was perfectly content to sit back and collect Disability checks for the rest of my life. Then on February 8, 2005, I discovered Turning Point Clubhouse thanks to my Intake therapist, Flo B. Through a slow, sustained process I began to see light at the end of the tunnel. In 2009, I attended along with other Members and Clubhouse Staff, a training initiative in Midland. It was there that I attended a workshop on Peer Support Specialists, I was hooked. It took two years but I finally got a position as a Peer. I worked of our auspice agency for just over five years in various capacities as a Peer until this past October. However, events within and without my control conspired to make it necessary to discontinue working at the Clubhouse as a Generalist. It was a massive psychotic relapse. Depressive this time, my last one in 2013 was a Manic episode. I m getting better slowly, but Recovery is a long and winding Road, leading sometimes who knows where, All a person can do is take it one day at a time.

3 Page 3 Valentine s Day By: Debra C. Also called St. Valentine s Day or the Feast of St. Valentine, it is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14th. It originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it isn t a public holiday in any country. Several martyrdom stories associated with the various Valentines that were connected to February 14th were added to later martyrologies, including a popular account of St. Valentine of Rome which indicated he was imprisoned for performing wedding for soldiers and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to popular legend, St. Valentine healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius, and before his execution, he wrote her a letter signed Your Valentine as a farewell. The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of English writer, Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, candies and sending greeting cards (known as valentines ). He will heal each of us in his due time, He will also keep us safe from all harm. I will keep praying for us all and keep my faith in Him. 5 Page 5 Henry Ford Museum Outing On January 16th, MLK Day, the Clubhouse went to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. We had a wonderful time looking at the different exhibits (see pictures on Page 7). Just being on the same bus where Rosa Parks took a stand for civil rights was a humbling, learning experience. I really look forward to returning again. Submitted By: Shirlon C. Black History Month Origins Black History Month, or National African-American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African-Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of Negro History Week, the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African-Americans. Since 1976, every President has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. Submitted By: Laranzer C. Food & Social Unit Update The Food & Social Unit has lost it s Unit Leader, Stasha T. and is currently in the process of looking for another Leader. But everyone is pulling together to make up for that loss. The food has been good. We are working together to stay a strong Unit with a lot of heart and appreciation for what we do everyday. Monday, January 30th was the first Clubhouse Outing I went to. I am new to Turning Point, so I was very excited to go bowling. We went to Skore Lanes in Taylor and it cost $1.50 a game, I thought that was a great deal. We ended up taking eleven people with us and we were divided into four teams. My teammates were Amie and Homer. Both did really well and I was really far behind, but I was having fun and that s what counts. Homer, Shirlon and myself ended up playing a second game and having a really great time, it really made me happy. Afterwards, it was between Wendy s and White Castle for where we were going to go for dinner. Wendy s won. I ended up with chicken nuggets and a Frosty. I had such a great time, and I want to go on a bowling Outing again. Hello, my name is Shirley D. I have been at Turning Point Clubhouse for about two years. The task that I have here is to make sure that I answer all phone calls, greet everyone that stops in, make sure that everybody signs in, Members and visitors and clean the entry door and windows. 10 Turning Point Clubhouse 1605 Fort Street Lincoln Park, MI Phone: Fax: Suzanne Pinson, LBSW: Director Local Activity Corner On, Saturday February 11th, Turning Point will participate in the annual Lincoln Park Chocolate Walk for the first time. It is similar to a pub crawl, but instead of alcohol you collect chocolate. We are one of 20 local businesses to participate in this years walk.
