1 The Lamplighter October 2018 Salem United Church of Christ Higginsville, Missouri Dear Friends, On 19 August, I marked my fifth anniversary of being at Salem United Church of Christ. I was remiss in not saying anything about it, but when Sarah was assembling the August Lamplighter, I was preparing for the Youth on Mission trip to Imperial, Pennsylvania. You may have noticed that the front page of that edition of the newsletter talked about the Elders projects for the Festival of Sharing. Quite frankly, I thought I had sent Sarah an article, but I never did. That was completely my error. When we returned from the work trip, I was thinking of other things and the anniversary slipped my mind. Of course, my coming here was a bit unusual. As you may recall, the Rev. Dale Parson suggested to the Church Council that they try a different way of finding a pastor. Dale told the Council about a method of designating a pastor for a particular period of time, after which, we could decide together whether this was a situation that worked for us all. I was serving University Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio, and had gotten Privilege of Call in the United Church of Christ. This privilege is a sort of an authorization that tells churches that the one receiving the privilege has the approval of a Committee on Ministry to seek a call. I was not earnestly seeking a call, but Crystal and I were living 50 miles apart, so when Dale called and asked if I would be interested in speaking to a congregation in western Missouri about serving there, I was certainly open to it. I met with some of the Council members in March of 2013, which was the beginning of our conversations about Salem Church and whether I could serve here. During that time, I spoke with some people who knew the congregation. I remember very clearly one of them saying that all that Salem really needed was someone to love them. That was something I thought I could do. The Council invited me to preach on Father s Day in 2013, and the congregation decided to have me come as the designated minister for a term of three years. If during that three years we all wanted to make the designation permanent, we could do that by a vote of the congregation. In the annual meeting in January 2015, the congregation made the designation permanent and I became the settled pastor here. I was delighted then to have the sense of permanence attached to my work here. After five years, I am even more delighted. Salem is a wonderful family situated in a marvelous community. I could not ask for a better place to serve, to work, and to share life together. Salem Church is a generous and loving church, filled with hard working and committed people. I consistently receive support and encouragement from you all. Sarah Berry and June Howell are amazing people with whom to work. Sometimes I go to the Chinese buffet here in town, and, as we all do, I pick up a fortune cookie. One of the fortunes that I found is now on my desk. It says, You deserve respect and will eventually get it. I happened to be with several ministerial colleagues when I got the fortune, and we all laughed about it. The truth is, however, I already feel respected. I could not ask for more. Salem United Church of Christ is my home. I am happy to be here. Grace and Peace Tommy 1

2 October 2018 The Lamplighter Page 2 Special Days in October October 7: World Communion Sunday, Dedication of Festival of Sharing Offering October 8: Columbus Day Observed October 13: Festival of Sharing in Cameron October 14: Neighbors In Need offering dedicated October 21 : 10:30 a.m. Service featuring Children s Sunday Church Hayride and Weiner Roast October 28: Reformation Sunday Servant leadership From Christ s perspective, a true leader is a servant, committed to the success of each individual in the group. Jesus did not criticize his disciples desire to lead; he just showed them how to do it by washing their feet.... The essence of spiritual leadership, therefore, is following Jesus and serving people. People rebel against controlling leaders, but it is impossible to rebel against a servant. Geoff Gorsuch, Brothers! Calling Men Into Vital Relationships Stick with it! If I ve learned anything about friendship, it s to hang in, stay connected, says journalist Jon Katz. Don t walk away, don t be distracted, don t be too busy or tired, don t take them for granted. Friends are part of the glue that holds life and faith together. This applies to church life too. When we re annoyed by some aspect of congregational life or caught in conflict with other members, it s tempting to drift away to another church or no church. Even when all is fine, we sometimes let church take a back seat. But our bonds with the family of God are part of the glue that holds life and faith together. For the sake of the benefits we gain and give, may we hang in [and] stay connected with our church family. May we not walk away [or] be distracted,... be too busy or tired. May we not take one another for granted but thank God for this glue even when things get a bit sticky! Amron Gene Good, son of Aaron and Lynna (Kays) Good was baptized on Sunday, September 1, Amron s Godparents are Mark and Alesia Emison. Amron s grandparents are Mark and Joyce Kays and Vicki and Jerry Good, great-grandparents are Doris and Kenneth Hemme, Gene and Charlene Beissenherz, the late Clarence and Emma Good, and the late Frank and Joyce Kays. In the beginning, this took the form of local growing projects, involving farmers and suppliers who offered their time and resources to grow a crop locally then donated the proceeds to FRB. The donations were used to develop and sustain growing projects in underdeveloped countries, helping local farmers become self-sufficient, feeding themselves and providing extra income to improve their standard of living. In recent years, that effort has been fulfilled by donations from the Men s Fellowship, individuals, organizations, and other churches. While the original mission of FRB has not changed, FRB has. They have grown in scope and changed their leadership, name and logo. Starting October 1, 2018, FRB will be referred to as Growing Hope Worldwide. To bring Salem members up to date, Alex Morse from FRB will be at Salem on Sunday, October 28 th to speak at both the 8:30 and 10:30 services. Alex will share what is happening at Growing Hope Worldwide along with the importance of the ongoing efforts they are making to alleviate world hunger. In addition, between the two services, there will be an informal opportunity for an in-depth question and answer session in the basement dining room for those who are interested. Coffee and light snacks will be available. Please plan to attend to learn more as the Salem Men s Fellowship prepares to support this worthwhile effort into the future. 3

Sometimes we act, only to see in hindsight that we caused harm. Or self-righteousness blinds us to the good guidance of others. St. Ignatius of Loyola pondered the difficulty of aligning our actions to God s ways. He taught the need for discernment of spirits examining internal thoughts and emotions to see if they originate with and lead to God. Ignatius called it consolation when he felt loved by God and eager to care for people in need, and desolation when something left him full of darkness and fear that moved him away from God and neighbor. Think of a time you made a decision and then felt peaceful, full of light, convinced it was right. And when have you done something despite feeling tangled in knots about it, and perhaps later felt worse? Life isn t always so clear-cut, but the more we practice discernment, the better we will recognize and follow God s will. Equals at communion After saving England from Napoleon s threats in 1815, the Duke of Wellington achieved hero status. One Sunday, as the duke approached the altar for communion, a poor man from London s streets, wearing rags, knelt beside him. The indignant minister whispered for the vagrant to move away. Don t you realize this is the great Duke of Wellington? he asked. When the duke overhead, he responded, Leave him alone. We re all the same here. The ground is level at the cross. That s the spirit in which we celebrate World Communion Sunday on the first Sunday of October. Paul says believers share the Lord s Supper by partaking of the one bread (1 Corinthians 10:17). Everyone at the communion table is equal in God s sight, needing his forgiveness and grace. NEIGHBORS IN NEED SPECIAL OFFERING Neighbors in Need (NIN), which we will receive on Sunday, October 14, supports the UCC s ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC s Justice and Witness Ministries to fund a wide array of local and national justice initiatives, advocacy efforts and direct service projects. Through ucc.org/justice, our national Justice and Witness Ministries office offers resources, news updates, and action alerts on a broad spectrum of justice issues. Working with members of the UCC Justice and Peace Action Network (a network of thousands of UCC justice and peace advocates), Justice and Witness continues its strong policy advocacy work on issues such as the federal budget, voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties, and environmental Justice. Neighbors in Need also supports our American Indian neighbors in the UCC. One-third of the offering supports the UCC s Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Historically, forebears of the UCC established churches and worked with Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arickara, and Hocak in North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and northern Nebraska. Today there are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 2018 theme for NIN is Love of Neighbor. If scripture commands, love your neighbor as you love yourself. Then who is my neighbor? The Neighbors in Need offering will be received on October 14. You may place your offering in the enclosed envelope, bring it to the church office, or place a check in the offering plate payable to Salem UCC-NIN during worship service on October 14.

7 October 2018 The Lamplighter Page 7 FROM THE BOARD OF ELDERS For many years, Salem, other churches, and other organizations have participated in the Festival of Sharing. The Festival of Sharing is a cooperative response to world hunger, poverty and injustice and seeks to raise awareness of its cause and to address solutions. The Festival of Sharing is an interfaith, regional celebration, and gathering of resources that will be held Saturday, October 13. When people of faith come together, our sharing makes a positive and powerful difference in the lives of people in need. Members of Salem have participated in the Festival of Sharing through many different projects and causes, including quilts made by our quilters for the auction, coupons, blankets, specialized packets that are passed out following a disaster or other incident, along with church members donating time and labor for repackaging and loading bulk produce items that are distributed to those in need. This year the Board of Elders have chosen two projects that we are asking members of Salem to participate with, they are Missouri Paper Product Pack and Missouri Personal Hygiene Pack. Attached with this article is a description of how they benefit those who truly need our help. Please consider donating any of the many items involved with these packets that are listed or a monetary donation is also accepted. A container has been placed in the back of the Sanctuary to collect your items. We will accumulate them, dedicate them on October 7, and deliver them on October 13,
