1 S e r e n i t y A s s i s t e d L i v i n g & M e m o r y C a r e D i l w o r t h, M N Points of Interest: October Birthdays Activity Calendar Snapshot Photos Movies of the Month Every October, once pumpkins have grown fat and orange, these gorgeous gourds are picked and used in a wide variety of ritual activities from baking pumpkin pie to carving jack-o -lanterns for Halloween. But there s no need to wait until October 26, Pumpkin Day, to make the most of your favorite pumpkin traditions. Pumpkins have been grown in North America for 5,000 years. While these gourds are native to Central America and Mexico, the tradition of carving pumpkins began across the Atlantic Ocean in Ireland. The practice of carving jack-o -lanterns began with an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. The legend says that Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink, but then the tightfisted fellow did not want to pay. Jack tricked the Devil into transforming himself into a coin he could use to buy the drinks, but Jack put the coin into his pocket next to a silver cross. The Devil, so near a cross, could not change back into his devilish self. Jack made the Devil promise not to claim his soul should he die. The Devil had no choice but to agree. However, when Jack did die, God would not allow someone who caroused with the Devil into heaven. In the end, Jack was sent into the dark of night with nothing but a lamp fashioned from a carved-out turnip, lit with a lump of glowing coal. For this reason, the Irish have long carved images of Jack of the Lantern from turnips and, later, potatoes or beets. The scary, glowing faces were used to frighten away Stingy Jack and any other evil spirits. When Irish immigrants came to North America, they discovered a new medium for their jack-o -lanterns: pumpkins. With their hollow centers and wide, thick, orange shells, these gourds were a perfect vessel. Today, pumpkins are grown on every continent except Antarctica, and people around the world use them to carve jack-o -lanterns.

With unwavering support from his family and girlfriend, Bauman embarks on a long and heroic journey to physical and emotional rehabilitation.

7 Mama Mia (2008) Donna (Meryl Streep), an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter's wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother's past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day. Saving Lincoln (2013) The story of Mr. Lincoln and his self-appointed bodyguard, U.S. Marshal Ward Hill Lamon, a banjoplaying Southerner who foiled repeated attempts on the President's life, and kept him functioning during the darkest hours of the Civil War. Snowden (2016) The NSA's illegal surveillance techniques are leaked to the public by one of the agency's employees, Edward Snowden, in the form of thousands of classified documents distributed to the press.

11 Operation Christmas Child For the past 11 years, Serenity Assisted Living has participated in Operation Christmas Child. It s mission is to provide local partners around the world with shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies as a means of reaching out to children in their own communities with the Good News of Jesus Christ. These simple gifts get shipped outside the United States to children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease; and to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S. Help us collect donations for this wonderful project! Please take a look at the suggested donation list on the next page and see if there is anything you can donate; there are collection boxes in the front of both buildings. We will be packing our shoeboxes in November. Our goal is to pack 1 box per client!!

18 Learn about Esther! Esther met her husband after the war when she was in Wahpeton and after 1.5 years of dating she got married to Bud and was married for 53 years. Bud passed away 18 years ago around Thanksgiving. Esther will be 90 in November. The couple had three children (John, Diane and Connie). John spends most of his time in Texas and her two girls years live in the lakes area. Esther worked outside the home for roughly 20 years at the Wahpeton J.C. Penny s Store. Bud and her travelled to Arizona a few times. Esther s hobbies include puzzles and reading her devotions. She loves to put together the 1000-piece puzzles because she states, the 500 pieces bore me! She has 7 Grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

19 Learn about Pete! Did you know that Serenity has a celebrity? Those of us who have loved fastpitch softball which is a game of softball that is played with 9 or 10 players on each side and in which pitches are thrown with speed and base stealing is allowed. That s right, no other than Pete Bachmeier, one of our newest gentlemen at the West Campus. Pete played fast pitch softball for many years starting in 1954 and was inducted in the North Dakota Hall of Fame in His hobbies include woodworking in which he had made over a dozen grandfather clocks and many other items. He came from a large family of 2 sisters and 7 brothers, with only 3 remaining. He and his wife where married for 15 years. Welcome Pete

20 Learn about Yvonne! Hello my name is Yvonne and I am pleased to have Sernity become my new home. I came from Moorhead and have three children who all have busy lives. While I was raising my children I worked for over 10 years with the phone company. I was blessed to receive many promotions through work that allowed me to have a company car and do a lot of training. The phone company was a good place to work and now the land-line phone system is totally different with cell phone usage. I don t have a specific hobbies but I do love jewelry and love to take walks. My husband and I fortunate to do some traveling but never in long distances. I would like to thank all who have welcomed me.

21 Learn about Donna! Donna came from a large family of 7 sisters and 5 brothers in which she is the only one remaining. Donna has three children with 2 of them being deceased. Donna has a love for horses and has owned 6 of them over the course of years. At one time she would go bare back riding until she could afford an English saddle. Donna loves puzzles, drawing and the outdoors where she loves to walk. There was a time that she set out to Bismarck walking, and then turned around at the half way point. Welcome Donna
