For the past 2 months the youth group has been meeting with 5 other churches in the area to create one LARGE youth group. The churches are SOV, Mission of the Atonement, Calvary Lutheran, St Andrew's, Community of Christ Church, and First Emmanuel. The first event was a huge success with over 20 youth attending the corn maze. We have decided to do at least one big event every month with rotating the job of hosting. The events range from attending retreats, doing service projects, fun activities, and forming relationships. Don't worry we will still do our fun activities at SOV like babysitting nights and Easter breakfast. 2 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER Interim Pastor Brian s Message PAGE 2 New Members at SOV by Interim Pastor Brian Brandt On October 25 we welcomed five new members to Shepherd of the Valley. To celebrate the gift of their presence at SOV, I want to tell you a bit about them. Barbara Kincaid comes to us from the west suburban Chicago area. She started worshipping at SOV several months ago. She decided she liked SOV s friendly atmosphere and joyful style of worship. She told me she would transfer her membership from Lord of Life in Schaumburg and get involved at SOV. So be it! Barbara now sings in the choir (early service), comes every Wednesday morning to the weekly Bible study (she s an avid student of the Bible, having read it from cover to cover), and knits prayer shawls. She s got a charming knack for letting you know exactly what she thinks. I hope you get to know her! The other four people received on October 25 are members of the Jain family. They started attending SOV around the time I first came here, in Spring Manoj is the father and Simmi the mother; Shyna, eldest child, is now studying part time in college, preparing to enter a profession; her younger brother, Swayam, is a member of our Confirmation class. The Jains are from northwest India, and are seeking refuge in the USA because they suffered religious persecution for converting to Christianity several years ago. The Jain family members usually worship at the early service. They re good folks with interesting stories to tell. If you would like me to introduce you, I would be glad to do so. I hope you will extend a welcome to Manoj, Simmi, Shyna, and Swayam if you see them at worship or another SOV event. If you know of folks attending SOV regularly who are not members but might like to join up, please ask them to talk with me. I will gladly help those people get oriented to SOV, and to a Lutheran way of seeing and practicing Christianity, in a way tailored to suit each individual. Not that official membership is necessary to enjoy the worship and community of SOV. But sometimes membership feels like the right spiritual step for people; and when such insight comes, I m glad to help them take that step in their walk with God.

4 Page 4 SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Kids of the Kingdom Christian Preschool Kids of the Kingdom News for November As we enter a season of thanksgiving, our hearts are full of thankfulness for all who give of their time and talents to make Kids of the Kingdom a great school. Thank you to Pastor Brian for our weekly chapel times, Valsla George for volunteering her time to love and serve our students, Peggy Vermaas and her crew for the fresh paint and clean carpets, Michael Johnson for the playground maintenance, Arden and Jeff for the upkeep of the facilities, Aaron Zahrowski for website upkeep and the KOK Board, Lisa Ramsey, Christine Edgar, Debbie Johnson, Linda Rasmussen and Wendy Roeder. Thank you for your support of our school through our Christmas Greens Fundraiser. Orders will be available for pick-up Sunday, November 22. Here s what s happening in each of our classrooms: Pre-Kindergarten: October in PreK was filled with fall wonder. At school we saw a praying mantis, an orange and black caterpillar, a sunflower and various colors of leaves. We made ladybugs and spiders to show an AAB pattern on our calendar. We took a class trip to the pumpkin patch. Did you know they had a sea monster in the lake? Reading the Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves, inspired us to make a scarecrow for the church garden. November we will be exploring the sights, sounds and smells of Thanksgiving as we talk about our five senses and learn about the Pilgrims. We have so much to thank God for here at KOK! 4 s Preschool Class: The highlight of October was a class trip to the pumpkin patch and a class Harvest Party. We begin the month of November by heading to the forest. We will discover how camouflage protects, classify animals that live in the forest, and how discover how each kind of animal has a different footprint. The story, Bear Says Thanks will transition us to a focus on thankfulness and kindness. We will finish the month with a feast where we put our learning into practice and prepare a special treat for our families. 3 s Preschool Class: In the Preschool 3s Class, we spent October learning about apples, scarecrows, and pumpkins. During October we worked on letters A, B, C, and D, the number 1, circles, and the colors red and orange. A few weeks ago we enjoyed a beautiful fall day at Lakeview Pumpkin Patch. Coming up in November we will learn the letters E, F, and G, the number 2, squares, and continue with the color orange. Our theme for November will be Thanksgiving and we ll have a celebration just before the holiday break. 2 s Preschool Class: November is a time to GIVE THANKS. At class, we will practice how to give or share while role-playing together and we will show our thanks with count your blessing activities. Gobble, Gobble Turkeys will help us learn our colors while we sing "The Rainbow Turkey". Lastly, we will make muffins to share at our Family Feast on November 18 th.

Once a month, starting on Nov. 15, we will be using the kneelers and have 2 communions stations then too. Thankful for Each Other Dear Lord, As we gather together around this table laden with your plentiful gifts to us, we thank You for always providing what we really need and for sometimes granting wishes for things we don't really need. Today, let us be especially thankful for each other--for family and friends who enrich our lives in wonderful ways, even when they present us with challenges. Let us join together now in peaceful, loving fellowship to celebrate Your love for us and our love for each other. Amen. By Joanna Fuchs

8 PAGE 8 NEWS LETTER TITLE VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Fellowship Committee News...Submitted by Diane Lewis Giving Thanks for our SOV Kitchen Shower! We are thankful for all the support of our SOV Oktoberfest Kitchen Shower the last 4 weeks of October. During this time of our annual Stewardship season the family of Christ came together to express our love and thanks to God through your donations as well as sharing a written "thank you". We also had people volunteer in bringing food, help set up the Sunday Fellowship and clean the kitchen. We have had some of our children from our young families through high school youth volunteer to help clear the tables and do other tasks. They serve with a smile and a happy heart. Our Fellowship team wants to go into the season of Thanksgiving and Advent and acknowledge and celebrate all the gifts that help support our church. We encourage and welcome any suggestions or questions about volunteering with our Fellowship ministry. Feel free to secretarysov@gmail.com, or any of the Fellowship team. Together in Christ, Your SOV Fellowship team Diane Lewis, Peggy Vermaas, Sharon Graalum and Ginny Adamo ***Temporary kitchen clean up policy*** Starting October 18 we will need to have someone volunteer at least one week in advance to clean the kitchen after late service for the following Sunday. With our use agreement with the OEC church, we have to have the kitchen cleaned and ready for use by 1:30 PM. If we have volunteers signed up ahead of time then this policy will only be used when there are no volunteers. To date our challenge has been to have the kitchen cleaned. Prayerfully consider how we can go forward without needing this policy.
