They were bold, and told me that the reason they don t come to church regularly is because they are bored with the church. If I am honest with myself, church can be boring for me too. Most people assume that I live for everything church worship, service, you name it. But that isn t always the case (hey, I m human too). I share with you the questions I asked them, so that you might ask yourself next time you think you are bored with church. 1. Do you know the way(s) you might best connect with God? I suspect that many of us don t know how to personally connect with God. Is it through prayer, reading Scripture, writing, drawing, singing, sharing with a small group, being in solitude, hiking at daybreak, acts of serving others, etc., etc.? We change up the worship service every week and season to help us be able to reach all different kinds of learning styles. And if you re not experiencing something that will help you connect to God, LET ME OR LEADERSHIP BOARD KNOW what that might be! We ll try to work that into our worship or programming! 2. What are you bringing with you to church? Perhaps your boredom is due to whatever baggage you re bringing with you into the church. As your pastor, I am keenly aware that every person in the room is in a different place. Some are having the best days of their lives, some are in deep mourning. Some trust the church, while others have deep wounds and/or scars from the damage the church has caused the list could go on. I find that the times boredom kicks in, is when my heart and mind are somewhere else. Is the life that is happening outside the sanctuary something that you re praying about inside of the church or is it something that is weighing on you and keeping you from being present? 3. Is Sunday morning worship your sole form of sustenance? Please, please, please, quit making the Sunday service your sole form of sustenance! Believe me, I love having you in worship! But I encourage you to also: Attend a Bible Study.. Attend a UMW Meeting or Men s Breakfast. Help out at the UMW Rummage Sale or the Halloween Event. Sing in the Choir. Volunteer in a local school. Take a Volunteer in Mission trip. What we do on Sunday as the church is about half (at best) of what we need to be about as a Christians. At its origin, the Church was a place where people deeply engaged with one another s stories, shared life and food, prayed, and invited new people to be a part of the journey. Our worship service on Sunday morning is not everything! To get everything, you have to diversify your investments and examine what it is you expect Sunday to be. The Circuit Rider is a monthly publication with June and July issues combined. Articles and news items may be submitted by the 15th of each month to the editor, Judy Dobbs at office@plattsburghumc.org or judy.dobbs@yahoo.com or by placing typed copies in the Circuit Rider mailbox in the church office. Please identify the submission with your name and contact information. 2

3 Remember this Sunday School song?: I am the church, you are the church, we are the church together. Guess what? If you re bored with the church, and you re a part of the church well I don t think I need to finish that sentence, do I? If you need ideas, don t hesitate to check out our announcements each week in the bulletin or this newsletter to see what is happening and jump in! See you around the church as you Share, Connect, Serve, and Grow on your faith journey! Sincerely, Pastor Phil Adirondack District Superintendent, Rev. Items included rhubarb, squash, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, apples, snap beans, swiss chard, melon, eggplant, peppers, and many others. During the months of June through August the Shelf served 1,418 household requests for a total of 4,570 persons. Extra food items were given to families with school-aged children throughout the summer. Thank you for helping to provide fresh and non-perishable food choices for our clients. Please note the Food Shelf is no longer accepting or using plastic single-use bags to package groceries. Thank you for your past donations of these items. From Cabot, Vermont Americana-roots and folk duo, Dana and Susan Robinson combine vivid, songwriting and storytelling, with fiddle tunes, banjo grooves, elegant melodies, and rich harmony singing. Many songwriters have been heralded as modern day Woody Guthries or keepers of the American rural spirit, but that mantle might be better entrusted to musicians like Dana Robinson who embody both the heart and soul of folk music. Dirty Linen Drawing upon experiences of more than twenty years of touring, Dana and Susan craft a performance that conveys the mystery and wonders of their journey. Their unique blend of original songwriting and traditional Appalachian music, bring to their performances a deep understanding of America s musical heritage, and how it relates to our contemporary lives. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Dana relocated to New England where he discovered both a thriving songwriters scene and the deep well of traditional mountain music. In the early 1980s, Dana settled in northern Vermont and built a house off the grid on 30 acres near the Canadian border. There he founded a popular bakery, café and music venue. Dana launched into full-time touring after the release of his 1994 debut CD, Elemental Lullabye, and after receiving a request to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City for Putumayo s Shelter benefit project. Susan grew up with her dad s jazz big band rehearsing in the basement in Manchester, Vermont and learned classical piano as a child. As an adult she turned to oboe and Scottish fiddle. After Susan and Dana met in 2002, she took up old-time banjo and learned from the banjo-greats in and around Asheville, North Carolina. Since 2003 Dana and Susan have performed hundreds of concerts across the United States, Great Britain and Canada. "Exquisite music - physical and spiritual, contemporary and ancient, up to its eyeballs in mud and transcendence. Musicians like Dana Robinson don't grow on trees!" Music Upstream Rural America explored with elegant simplicity. Their music and cleanly poetic songwriting bring to mind the great folksingers of our times. - Asheville Citizen-Times Reusable cloth bags and paper grocery bags (any size) are most welcome now. A group at PUMC is in the stages of discussion to plan a get-together day to make and assemble cloth shopping bags for the Food Shelf. If you think you might be interested in working with the group, please contact Margaret Tallman, PUMC Food Shelf Representative, at or margaret.tallman@yahoo.com. 4

6 OUR PUMC FAMILY HENRY and CHERYL WARD Cheryl and Henry had just returned from their work as volunteers at the food shelf at PUMC. Let me take you for a quick tour, Henry said, as soon as I stepped through their door. It s a comfortable, modern townhouse in a quiet part of town. Framed photos of children and family as well as memorable events adorned the walls. Cheryl pointed out their music room with her electric piano and Henry s conspicuously present giant bass standing in the corner. It was later revealed to me how music brought them together as a couple and has been a very significant part of their lives ever since. The dining room opened out onto an enclosed, shaded patio decorated with rose bushes, a few vegetable plants, and a wonderfully healthy looking lemon tree. The mood there was perfect for this happily retired, and vibrant couple. It s just right for us, Henry said. The hour or so that I spent with Cheryl and Henry sped by. Having spent years as an ordained minister, Henry was used to putting words together, which made my part easy. It all started in New Jersey. I went to school there, college there, and divinity school there, Henry said. A part of Henry s career started with the Grand Union Company in New Jersey, where there were 7 stores. In his very young years he was trained by them as a tradesman meat cutter and a manager. I grew up in the grocery business, Henry said, and I was working with my family in the grocery business since I was 10 years old. I ve always had an interest in the grocery business. Because of his love for music, Henry started his higher education as a fine arts major but later switched to marketing and business management because of his experience with the Grand Union Company. But I loved music, Henry said. I became a union musician. I played in bands and orchestras all over the place. I played with the New Jersey Wind Symphony and the Sussex County Symphony. I played bass, brass, and everything else but then I realized that life wasn t for me. Henry and Cheryl met while they were in high school in Rockaway, New Jersey. We played in a band together, Cheryl said. I played the clarinet. They dated, then became engaged, and married a year later. In 1973, Henry became ordained as a Deacon in the New Apostolic Church. He was a full-time Assistant Pastor in the Church in New Jersey and at the same time worked full time for Grand Union. In 1976 he was asked by the Church to move to Plattsburgh. The thing is, Henry said, is that every time I was up for a promotion with Grand Union, the Church would ask me to move, but the Grand Union always made sure I had a job with them wherever I went. Sometimes though, it meant I had to take a cut in pay. 6

7 Cheryl has also followed a distinguished career in retail management. Necessarily following Henry in his assignments as Pastor, Cheryl s distinguished reputation made her in high demand for management positions with major retailers wherever they went. Henry was the Pastor of the New Apostolic Church in Plattsburgh when it was built and finally dedicated in The Church had just gotten a new organ when the head of the Church came to Plattsburgh to talk to Pastor Henry. I thought he was going to ask me how I liked the new organ, Henry said, but instead he asked me to move to their church in Saugerties, New York. By that time, Henry and his family were firmly rooted in Plattsburgh. He acquiesced, however, and followed the direction set for him. I always did what I was asked, he said. The Church there was in trouble, so I helped turn it around. While doing that, Henry was also working at Grand Union in the city of Coxsackie, more than 30 miles away. His responsibilities there later expanded to two churches and as years went by he became a District Leader, responsible for 10 churches. He retired from the church at age 65 as was mandated at that time. Henry and Cheryl then brought their family back to Plattsburgh. We loved it here, they both said. Our children received their higher education here, and moved on. All are married and have successful careers. Dorothy, the oldest, is a high school principal on Long Island. She and her husband have 3 children. Henry and his wife live in Erie, Pennsylvania where he is the Vice President of the hospital there. Susan remained in Plattsburgh and has a career with Dr. Kline at his Dental Implant Office. She and her husband have 2 boys. Karen, the youngest, lives in Dobbs Ferry, New York, where her husband is a school Superintendent. They have 2 children. Cheryl happily mentioned that they have been further blessed with 3 great grandchildren, with another on the way. It has been my good fortune to have the opportunity to work closely with Henry until I finished my term as Finance Secretary. As Treasurer I saw Henry spending long hours in the office figuring out payroll and budget, etc. Henry carries out this responsibility and others with commitment and passion. As affirmed by today s conversation, these have been hallmarks of the lives of Cheryl and Henry Ward. I m so proud that they are members of our PUMC family. By: Michael Conine Something to ponder: Trees are like churches in so many ways seasons, colors, roots, purpose How is PUMC like a beautiful tree? The similarities are almost endless! Reminder: If you would like to provide a cake or special treat to celebrate a joy in the life of your family or community during Fellowship 15, please let Marsha Lawrence know at least 3 weeks in advance. munger39@charter.net
