2 Welcome to Worship at Wellesley Village Church! An Open & Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ We Welcome All! We extend a welcome as broad as the outstretched arms of God, who calls us together to pray, sing, and rejoice in God s glorious presence. Whoever you are, wherever you are on the journey of life and faith, we are delighted you are here! We welcome children to participate fully in First and Second Worship. During Second Worship, childcare for under 5 is available in the Family Worship Room, which is located on the main floor outside of the sanctuary. Village Children s Church occurs during Second Worship; children 1st grade and older begin in worship before transitioning to classes. Please see the blue resource folder for information and dates. We Value Community! Visitors, we want to help you connect with our community. Please fill out a Connection Card found in the blue folders or sign the welcome book in First Worship or the pew pads in Second Worship. Catriona Grant, will be the guest preacher at both services. Catriona currently serves as Senior Pastor at the Ledyard Congregational Church in Ledyard, Ct. She was one of the first Pastoral Residents to come to Village Church, serving with Quinn Caldwell from We look forward to welcoming Catriona back to Village Church and to celebrating thirteen years of our Pastoral Residency Program and the fourteen pastors who have served among us during that time. 6 UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES Details at: Still Open: Embracing the Breadth of God s Extravagant Grace Continues this Sunday! Oct. 16th, 10am-11am in Village Hall. In 1992, Wellesley Village Church committed to be an Open & Affirming (ONA) Congregation with the adoption of an ONA Statement which was later amended in 1998 for even greater inclusivity. With that same spirit of broadening our sense of inclusion, you are invited to this informational & conversational series to explore how we are called to be ONA today. Following First Worship, at 10am, we will engage conversation around how to be an ally and how we envision our church continue to live into being Open & Affirming! We hope to see you there! Come for one, come for all! Bring your questions, a willingness to learn, and a desire to share God's Grace broadly! Village Churchmen Luncheon October 20, 12pm The Village Churchmen will meet for their monthly (third Thursday) luncheon on Oct. 20 at noon. Open to all men, these luncheons require only that each person bring a lunch and beverage and be ready to engage in spirited conversation and fellowship. Pasta and Pumpkin Decorating Friday, October 28th from 6pm - 8pm The Community Ministry invites people of all ages to join with us for an evening of food, fun and pumpkin decorating. Come by anytime between 6pm and 8pm. This is a great way to meet new friends and party with old ones. Please RSVP to: kenchaulk@yahoo.com or come by the signup table in the Village Common on Sunday. Racial Justice Training Saturday, October 29, 8:30-4pm Facilitated by trained staff from the MACUCC, this training "seeks to create a common language around racism, to unmask racism in our lives, and to encourage long-term engagement in racial justice ministry." Book Drive for Prison Book Program Throughout October During the month of October we will be collecting books for the Prison Book Program in Quincy, MA. This organization provides books for incarcerated people. Please bring your gently used books to church with you beginning Sunday October 2. Books can be placed on the book shelf in Village Common. 7 Exploring the Bible Launch Date, November 2016 Massachusetts Bible Society is engaging New England in a study of the Bible from literary, historical, and devotional perspectives, and Village Church is joining in. Beginning in November, we will be engaging the six week intro course, What is the Bible?, where we will explore the organization and history of the Bible as well as take a peek into interpretation and the revelations presented by archeological findings. More information to come soon! NWW Ecumenical Fellowship The Newton Wellesley Weston Committee for Community Living is Village Church's partner in ministry to adults with developmental disabilities. For sixteen years NWW and Village Church friends gather in Village Common on Sunday afternoons from 4:30-6:30 for worship, food and fellowship. We invite you to experience this loving community. NWW guests will be with us on the following Sundays: October 30, November 20 (Thanksgiving Potluck Luncheon), December 18, February 12, March 12, and April 23 Led by Pam Emslie, Josh Fitterling and Judy Mongiardo, Ecumenical Fellowship is open to all. We are eager to include everyone in the invitation to serve on one of the Ministries or Boards of the church. If, as we hope, this time is right for you to consider such participation, we will explore the openings to find the one which best fits your skills and interests. In any given year, the work of the church is carried on by more than 100 individuals who give their time and energy. Often these folks say they feel called to serve and are glad to have been asked. If you are one who is presently serving on a Board or Ministry team, please know the blessing of thanks from a grateful church. On the other hand, if serving the church will be new for you - or even new again - please give your thoughts and prayers to saying yes when you hear from us.
