3 From The Chairman Another December is here, bringing to a close the 115th year since our predecessors established the Valley of Dallas. Time serves us mortals as measuring sticks to establish relative points from which to evaluate things. In the Scottish Rite, we are reminded that the Great Architect of the Universe is timeless. He is the Alpha and the Omega, without beginning and without end. We are to be comforted by this, as the world we live in offers tests to our faith sometimes beyond comprehension or understanding. It is with a sense of optimism that we send to our members this fourth quarter Valley newsletter. We have much to be thankful for, and we have numerous reasons to be optimistic about our Fraternity and our Valley in the future has been a good year for our Valley. Our three Memorial Reunions honoring Jim Payne, Joe Motley and Larry Ravert were well attended, and the degree work was excellent. Each of the Reunion luncheons with the families of our recently lost brethren was inspirational and uplifting. Our Valley performed 70 full-form degrees during the year. We capped 115 new Masters of the Royal Secret. Each of our Stated Meetings included an education segment and was efficiently managed. Our 4th Tuesday s Education Symposiums were outstanding and were led by our own members. Attendance at these events is growing. We will be introducing an additional form of regular educational series in 2013 with meetings away from our facility in order to give more attendance options to our members interested in receiving more light. Several of our most significant committees were re-energized during the course of the year. The fruits of the labors of these committee workers will be reaped for years to come. I am extremely grateful to each of the workers in our Valley. Whether you are on a degree team, or a committee or a constant supporter of our Valley demonstrated by your own way of life or your financial support, your contributions are appreciated. I simply cannot thank each of you sufficiently. The Valley of Dallas is here both for you and because of you. We all know that the costs of being a member are rising. I assure you that these increased regular dues and degree fees are not wasted. The Valley of Dallas delivers a very high quality education program with inspired, talented and enthusiastic teachers. Our costumes and our facility require constant upkeep and repair. Some of our more significant repairs have been postponed, but we will eventually address these needs as our funds allow. We are being good stewards of your dues and contributions. To those of you who are current on your dues, I extend to you our sincere thanks. For those who wonder if the benefits of membership in the Scottish Rite are worth the costs, all you need to do is give us an opportunity to show you what great tangible and intangible blessings being a member of the Valley of Dallas brings. Being an active member of the Valley of Dallas is a bargain! For those of you who are in real distress and having trouble paying these dues, we will be happy to help you work through your tough times. We do not hesitate to assist and aid those among us who are suffering. Another year is dawning, and I encourage each of you to call upon the inspiring and beautiful lessons of our 29 degrees. Chief among them is the concept of Masonic Labor: To learn, and to then teach each other. Learning should be ever present in all our lives. This concept enables our members to bond with each other, and it cultivates brotherly love. Remember, you are always welcome to attend any event, including our open Executive Officer s meetings held prior to our regular monthly stated meetings. There is an article about the annual Burns event contained in this newsletter. I urge you to make your reservations as soon as you can, as seating will be limited for this fantastic evening. Sponsored by the Knights of St. Andrew, the event grows bigger and better every year. Bring your Blue Lodge friends or non-mason friends to this very special fun night. It s a great way to show off our beautiful building and to celebrate the life and times of one of the most well known poets in history. Mark your calendar for January 18th. Reservations can be made online at our website or by telephone to Melissa Scott at For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who then shall prepare himself for battle? 1st Corinthians 14:8 Happy New Year! Buck 3
4 Major General James L. Williams Guest Speaker at Feast of Tishri Illustrious M. Douglas Adkins, 33 0 Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the Supreme Council, Orient of Texas Southern Jurisdiction, USA rises to welcome Major General James L. Williams (ret). Brother Williams gave an interesting and informative talk at the annual Feast of Tishri celebration, held on October 2, 2012 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Dallas Scottish Rite Cathedral. Greetings once again and thanks to all our members for a challenging and rewarding This past year has provided your Valley the opportunity to continue offering the best Scottish Rite experience to all our members. At the same time we have welcomed 115 new Scottish Rite Masons-in typical Dallas style, with full form costumes, settings, and an enviornment second to none. For this a special thanks to all our members laboring long during our three Reunion sessions in 2012; and we will do it all again in 2013!! Many of our newly minted Masters of the Royal Secret are becoming active in our Valley: by joining committees, voluntering for task, taking parts on Degree Teams, and attending our Scottish Rite University. We are delighted! Our message of involvement, commitment of service to the Fraternity, and brother to brother connections is working! Several have already completed the 1 st Master Craftsman program! Have you? We are committed to keeping the Valley of Dallas a special place for our Fraternity keeping the flame of Scottish Rite teaching alive. For this to happen, each of us has to contribute our efforts, talents, and time. Ask a Master Mason to join us at our Spring, Summer one day or Fall Reunions in 2013 (the dates are on our calendar) - He will thank you for the invitation and for the "experience". On behalf of all the staff at your Valley office Thank You we extend greetings of the season and we look forward to sharing 2013 with each of you. Fraternity Jerry From The General Secretary 4
