2 Wendell P. Miller Notes from the Chairman Well, it appears another year is fast coming to an end. I believe we have had a very successful year in our Valley, thanks to your help. It is certainly a wonderful thing to have so many brothers give of their time and talent to assist us. The honors program held in November was a wonderful event, and a great time was had by all. Our Thirty-Third Degree team conferred one of the best ceremonies I have ever seen, kudos to you for your performance. It takes several hours to memorize the work and several more of rehearsals to make it perfect. The Fort Worth Valley invested our Knights Commander of the Court of Honour. They also made a flawless performance. Since this was the first time we have participated in a ceremony this large, we expected some unusual logistical problems, but everything went smoothly and in a timely manner. A special thanks to the Valley of Fort Worth for their cooperation and professionalism in making this a memorable event. The new slate of officers for 2010 will be elected and appointed at the December Stated Meeting. The Installation will be held at the January Stated Meeting on January 18, Please attend and wish the new officers the very best. We wish to thank the 2009 officers for taking their jobs seriously and performing every task assigned to them professionally. We are in process of receiving dues for 2010 and I want to thank everyone who has contributed a little something extra in your payment. Be assured that every dollar we receive will be put to good use in enhancing the appearance of the building or to make the building more structurally sound. There are several areas that are in dire need of improvement and it is only possible with your assistance, so if you can, please help us maintain this great building. The next few months will be filled with activity. In January we have the Robert Burns Dinner on the 28th and the Grand Master's Conference on the 30th, Registration starts at 8:00 AM with the program starting at 10:00 AM. We will furnish coffee and donuts for you. In February we start our first three day Reunion on the 27th. Day two will be on March 13th and the third day will be on March 20th. Lets get in the mood and bring in as many candidates as possible. I think we still can have more than a hundred in a class if we all work together. It appears we are initiating more Master Masons than we have in several years, so lets see if we can do the same with the Scottish Rite. Again, I want to thank everyone for working so hard to make Dallas the best Valley in the Southern Jurisdiction as well as in Texas. George Carlin On Aging Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions. 'How old are you? ''I'm four and a half!' You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key. You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. 'How old are you?' 'I'm gonna be 16!' You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life, You become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!! But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're Just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed? You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone. But! wait! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would! So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and make it to 60. You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday! You get into your 80's and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; 'I Was JUST 92.' Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. 'I'm 100 and a half!' May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!
3 Office Directory Dallas Scottish Rite Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children has been the primary beneficiary of the Dallas White Rock Marathon for 13 years. Each year a young patient serves as the junior race director, representing the thousands of children treated at the hospital for orthopedic conditions and dyslexia. In this role, the junior race director helps participants and sponsors understand how TSRHC benefits from the support of friends like the marathon and takes part in festivities such as the pre-race ceremonies. This year's MetroPCS Dallas White Rock Marathon presented by NexBank was a huge success with a record 20,000 participants. Chairman - Wendell P. Miller, 33 o - wmiller@dallasscottishrite.org General Secretary - Ed Kirkpatrick, 33 o - ed.kirk@dallasscottishrite.org Admin. Assistant - Cindy Scholander - cindy.scholander@dallasscottishrite.org Events Coordinator - Glenda Dohm - gdohm@dallasscottishrite.org Office phone Office Fax South Harwood Street Dallas, TX Master Craftsman Course Meet the Junior Race Director: Robert, age 9 of Plano, Texas, has been a patient at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children since he was 7 weeks old. He was born with developmental dysplasia (DDH) of his right hip, or an abnormal hip socket formation. When Robert was 6 months old, he was placed in a soft, fabric brace, in an attempt to help keep his hip from being dislocated. A short 5 months later and to help correct his hip further, Robert underwent surgery at TSRHC. He spent the next two months in a hip spica cast, used to immobilize the hips and that usually extends from the mid-chest down to below the knee. At age 5, Robert underwent his second surgery and was again placed in a hip spica cast. During his recovery, Robert re-learned how to walk with the help of physical therapists. Now pain free and walking independently, Robert excels in sports. He plays baseball and golf and enjoys running and swimming. According to his family, Robert has a special name for his affected right hip calling it his power bionic hip. His exuberant, happy-go-lucky nature perfectly compliments his love for acting and the arts. He plays the piano, is a fan of Pokémon and loves American Idol. The Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction has crafted a home study course to further the Masonic education of the membership. Styled The Master Craftsman course. This course of study consists of six open book exams utilizing the Arturo DeHoyos book, Scottish Rite Ritual. Monitor and Guide and the Bridge to Light. This study course has a fee of $35.00 which includes your own personal copy of the Scottish Rite Ritual, Monitor and Guide in hard back consisting of nearly 1000 pages. It also includes the first of the six exams. When the first exam is finished, it is mailed to the Supreme Council and graded. The exam is returned with comments and the next one sent to you. When all exams are completed, a certificate and special Master Craftsman lapel pin is sent to the General Secretary for presentation at a Stated Meeting. It is a great experience that explains much of our ritual. The long awaited Master Craftsman II is now available, it can be ordered online from the Supreme Council or directly through the Dallas Scottish Rite. Master Craftsman II is only available to those who have completed the original Master Craftsman course. The cost is $35.00.

5 What a last quarter this has been! The first thing that happened was the Supreme Council Session in Washington, DC the first week of October which was where the new Honors people's names were announced. Your Chairman and I spent the whole afternoon of Sunday, Ed Kirkpatrick October 4 calling each of the Twenty recipients of the ThirtyThird Degree and the Forty-Three KCCH recipients. We had a full three day Reunion in October honoring Judge Leonard Hoffman, Jr. who was a long time member and one whale of a great guy. Congratulations to the 44 new Masters of the Royal Secret. The next thing on the agenda was Honors Day, November 14. One thing was quite different this year in that instead of just the Dallas Valley being involved in the festivities at the Cathedral, we also had the Valleys of El Paso, Fort Worth, Lubbock and Waco in town to participate in the Coronation and Investiture. The Dallas Thirty-Third degree team lead by Ill. Jerry Kirby were the first up and did an outstanding job. I have seen several Thirty-Third Coronations and this was as good, if not better than any I have witnessed. After lunch, the Fort Worth KCCH degree team headed by Hon. Steve Wolfe performed the Investiture on 113 new Knights Commander of the Court of Honour. The Knighting of the new Knights went off without a hitch. By using the five new Kneeling benches that Hon. Stephen Apple, Sr. built, we were able to knight five at a time using the Chairmen of the five Valleys and the S.G.I.G. to cap them. Our banquet was held at the Infomart that same evening at which time Ill. Fred E. Allen was crowned a Knight Grand Cross. Grand Cross is the highest honor that can be bestowed on a member and is only given by the Supreme Council. We have been doing quite a bit of work in and around the Cathedral to seal it up better. The major undertaking is the re-grouting of the front steps and the elimination of places for pigeons to roost, which should help keep the place cleaner We are presently working on a project to remodel the Heritage Lounge (donut room) with a new flat panel TV and are working on getting new Couches and Chairs for the conversation area. Anyone who would like to donate to this project, please do so. This project must be totally financed by specific donations. We hope to also be able to replace the carpet in that room and the basement foyer. As we work on these small remodeling jobs, it costs money, so we are asking anyone who can afford it to please donate to this worthy project. UPDATE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION Due to the increased costs of mailing and the continued problems communicating with our members, we are asking every member to update his personal information.
