1 Cincinnati Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Cincinnati PATRIOT Volume 32, Issue 2, CCSAR Enlightens Students at Miami Valley Christian Academy By. Dr. Ed Bonniwell CCSAR Compatriots (l to r) Dr. Ed Bonniwell, CCSAR President Jack Bredenfoerder, and Dan Schmidt. On Thursday, February 1st, the President of the Cincinnati Chapter of The Sons of the American Revolution, Jack Bredenfoerder, (the man in the center) and Dan Schmidt (On the right in the picture) and yours truly (on the left as you look at the picture), had the privilege of presenting the work of SAR to the school for which I am the visionary founder, the Miami Valley Christian Academy (MVCA). The academy is participating this year in the brochure and poster contest. Today we spoke to two classes of high schoolers, and then a large group of fourth and fifth graders. Amazingly, they were wonderfully engaged. With the school principal, we walked the halls with our unloaded weapons, and of course became the center of attention with the 407 students milling about when classes were changing. The Miami Valley Christian Academy will have us back next September for a major assembly similar to what we did at Hamilton Garfield School. I m pretty sure they re going to have us demonstrate a flintlock salute, and obviously perform our new and improved color guard protocols. Both Jack and Dan were beautifully articulate in their presentations, as Dan spoke of his relatives and connection to the American Revolution and what his family members did serving as militiamen attached to the colonial army. Jack described our work and also spoke of his family s involvement in the American Revolution, and said that some of those relatives lived right in Newtown where MVCA is located. Also another teacher committed her students to the poster project and contest. The effort was well received. A special thanks to Principal Beasley and other teachers who expressed much appreciation for the work of the Cincinnati Chapter of SAR. It was indeed a wonderful time and a high privilege to promote our organization. Mark Your Calendars! From the discussion, the group identified key opportunity areas and developed specific action items for These action items included: 1. Restructure Board of management meetings: Written reports will be submitted to Secretary and President. President will present one report highlighting the major points of the Committees. Secretary will record all submitted written reports in the minutes. Discussions of new and old business will remain on agenda. We encourage new business items be submitted to the Secretary in advance of the meetings. Compatriot Speaker Presentations will be added to each meeting. Opening and Closing remains the same. 2. Veterans Committee Expansion: Establish Veterans Outreach Committee. Increase Cincinnati SAR service to Veterans programs in line with Stark Award criteria. Committee will meet and establish committee goals. 3. Continue and Expand New-Member Engagement: New Members are often confused about what is happening at BOM Meetings. Quarterly inductions at luncheons. Offer Special Program sessions to members at General Events genealogy research, military history, compatriot skills training, others The term Board of Management may be turning new members away from our meetings. More informal fun event experiences. As new members what did we experience? What were our questions? 4. Current Officers will develop manuals based on their current officer responsibilities as defined in the Chapter By-Laws. They will establish officer directives and record all necessary contacts and schedules. 5. Establish Chapter Social Evenings. 6. The Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard will continue to develop training materials and training programs. We are planning even more Color Guard events in 2018 and we encourage all compatriots to attend these events whether in the Color Guard or not. The chapter s measureable goals in 2018: Increase New Members by 15 additional New Members over the 2017 New Member Total. Decrease Non-Renewals by 5 members less than the 2016 Non-Renewal Total. Increase attendance at New General Membership events to at least 15% of all CCSAR members. Raise $1000 or more from Fundraising Activities. Chapter Award Goals: o OHSSAR Distinguished Chapter Award o At least 1 CCSAR youth award winner places 1 st at OHSSAR Level o President General s Streamer o Patriot Biography Award o U.S.S. Stark Award o 2019 Liberty Bell Americanism Award (Not eligible in 2018 because of our 2017 award) o Carl F. Bessent Award (Newsletter) o Partners in Patriotism Certificate Our hope is that this planning exercise will improve the chapter experience for all our compatriots. While 2017 was an exceptional year, we look forward to even greater success in spreading the principles of patriotism in the Cincinnati community in 2018! In patriotism, Jack

4 The Ohio Society SAR Recruits Memberships for a Cincinnati Chapter George Stewart, Chapter Historian The Ohio Society, Sons of the American Revolution was organized April 11, 1889 in the office of Governor Joseph B. Foraker, who became a charter member. The meeting at the Capitol in Columbus, Ohio was a preliminary meeting, attended by a few residents of the state. Eleven days later, at a second meeting, Reverend W. R. Parsons from Worthington, Ohio was elected the first President of the Ohio Society. At a meeting held on June 4, 1889 at the State House in Columbus, a Constitution and By-Laws were adopted. The annual dues were fixed at $1.00 and life membership at $ The National Congress at Louisville on April 30, 1890 began the work of recruiting membership for creating local chapters for the Society in Ohio. The first meeting in Cincinnati was held on May 28, 1890 at the Burnet House with an excellent attendance. The meeting was described as enthusiastic and energetic as efforts began to secure a large membership for the start of a Cincinnati Chapter. However, the Ohio SAR met with an unexpected obstacle in a public misapprehension of the character of the Society. Some of the German newspapers in Cincinnati conceived the opinion that German citizens were excluded from membership because they were Germans. It was found necessary to make explanations though the press. The Society received the powerful aid of General H. V. Boynton, whose editorials and explanations in the The Cincinnati Commercial-Gazette had awakened fresh interest in the Ohio Society Sons of the American Revolution.
