3 From The Chairman If you were in attendance at the Summer Reunion, you were part of a great day! In addition to bringing in 30 new Masters of the Royal Secret, we fed approximately 150 for lunch including the Joe Motley family. Illustrious Joe was a faithful member of our Valley for 60 years, and his legacy of hard work, faithful attendance and leadership will be in our hearts for generations. It is men like Joe who built our Valley. In a larger sense, being present for those terminal degrees and the just held capping ceremony at the August Stated Meeting was a great reminder to me that no matter how many Reunions or Stated Meetings a Scottish Rite Mason has attended the inspirations never get old. We are all traveling together, each of us seeking Truth and Light. The knowledge we gain and the joy we feel in being a part of this Fraternity is difficult to explain or measure because of this. I encourage each and every member of our craft to never forget why you took the initiative to knock on the inner door or take those first steps to that Place of Masonic Light. "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; For there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, wither thou goest." 4 Brothers All; From the General Secretary Greetings from the Valley of Dallas We want to update you on the many activities here at YOUR Cathedral. During the month of August we have been very active in the Valley; our Ambassador program is meeting with great success (see separate article), our Scottish Rite police bicycle program is off and running again, High School scholarships have been awarded and so it goes. Again, we have been very busy in the Valley. Our latest capping ceremony in August was a great success, with our new members AND THEIR families joining us for the event. We love to see our members families and will continue this effort in the months and years to come. A special thanks to Brother Max Gilley and his 30th degree team for an outstanding Vignette this summer. A great time was shared with our families, and we were very pleased to see a few of our members who have not been by the Cathedral for a while WELCOME HOME BROTHERS THIS IS YOUR HOUSE. It s DUES TIME for Below is an example of your 2013 dues notice and dues card. Please be advised your dues notice is with your dues card do not just discard. If you are an endowed member, please try to send us your annual per capita cost of $22.00 it would help us out tremendously, and we thank you in advance for your consideration. (Don t forget a little something for the Library and Museum Foundation. It s the bedrock of our Valley and needs your support too.) There are still a lot more Scottish Rite activities for the remainder of Our September stated meeting will be honoring the Order of DeMolay; the Feast of Tishri is in October, our 3 day Fall Reunion (1st, 2nd and 4th Saturdays in October), finishing with another capping ceremony in November. We have a lot still to do this year. Please consider getting a group together for one of our October Saturday Reunions. Drive down early or at your leisure during the day, have fellowship, perhaps view a couple of degrees, have lunch with old friends and meet your Brothers here. Jerry R. McNair Sample Sample John A. Second is the business of recruiting new Scottish Rite members. For Membership to be effective we need an energized organization on the ground in the field. It cannot be done from the Scottish Rite office. To accomplish this, we are aggressively pursuing a Lodge Ambassador program. Our vision is to have an Ambassador in each Lodge who is already a Scottish Rite Mason, and can represent the Dallas Valley in a very visible and proactive manner. The specific responsibilities for Ambassadors are: Keeping the benefits of SR Masonry and membership in front of the Blue Lodge members Facilitating new SR Masons from the Blue Lodge, not only for newly raised Master Masons, but with all lodge members who are not already in the SR providing a pipeline for new Valley members Answering questions, and addressing concerns Providing details on Reunions Keeping the District Manager informed Providing information from Lodge to Scottish Rite The Ambassador s program is one of the keys to the continued success and growth of the Dallas Valley. If you are interested in becoming a part of the membership committee, either as a Blue Lodge Ambassador or as an area representative, please contact me directly. My Scottish Rite address is: Bob.moore@dallasscottishrite.org. My cell phone number is Bob Moore, 32, KCCH Valley of Dallas Scottish Rite Membership Chairman. 9 MESSAGE FROM THE VENERABLE MASTER III. John McClellan Marshall 33º IGH My brethren of the Lodge of Perfection, there is one thing that we, as Masons, have been taught since we were first received on the point...we are far from perfect. That admission on our part, of course, represents the start of our Masonic journey both in the Blue Lodges and in the Scottish Rite. Once we have crossed that threshold, both symbolically and physically, there is no turning back. As Masons, we are committed to telling the truth, no matter how painful it may seem at the time, and to treating all as brothers, even those who are not. This all derives from that lesson of charity that we learned early on, because there is literally no limit to the definition of charity. For us in the Valley of Dallas, we are constantly reminded of that lesson by virtue of the fine hospital that we support. While charity begins at home, it must not stay there, or else it simply withers. I am not suggesting that we should, as a Body, diminish in any way our support for the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital. Not at all. What I am suggesting is that we, as individual Masons who are committed to our Fraternity, seek out opportunities to express our charity openly as Masons. This can be as simple as regularly wearing a golf shirt with the Scottish Rite eagle on it or a ring inherited from a parent or grandparent. In the modern day, it is not enough to have a bumper sticker that says "2B1 Ask 1". Seek out those among your acquaintance whom you know will be a credit to Masonry and who can benefit from it and ask them if they ever thought about it. This is not "recruiting" in the strict sense, but it is a way of leading a person to discern his latent interest in Masonry. By awakening the desire to become a Mason, you are helping your friend as well as the Fraternity, and in so doing helping our world to become a bit more perfect than it was. Dallas Knights of St. Andrew: Your Knights have been very busy this year participating in all Reunions, at each Stated Meeting and assisting several lodge officer installations. The KOSA is working hard preparing to host the first Orient of Texas gathering of Knights to be held here at the Valley of Dallas on November 10, This event will be an opportunity for all Texas Chapters to learn and share ideas with one another and continue to improve our Order. The Knights are also preparing for the Annual Robert Burns Dinner and celebration that will be held next year on January 18, PUT THIS ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW! Tickets will be on sale soon. We are looking for sponsors to host a table or furnish a donation of some item that can be auctioned off in our silent auction. (Contact Dan Hill or Gary Rock) AND NOW FOR THE REALLY BIG NEWS!!! The Knights have put together a raffle and the package is FANTASTIC AND UNBELIEVABLE. It is a 7 day/6 night stay at Nuevo Vallarta (10 minutes from Puerto Vallarta) in a 2 bedroom suite, 16 rounds of golf, and a $1000 American Airlines gift card. Tickets will be on sale beginning at the September stated meeting for only $10 each. The resort can be viewed at: Do not miss this opportunity for the trip of a lifetime. Drawing will be at the Burns Dinner on January 18, 2013 (you do not have to be present to win). All proceeds from this raffle will benefit your Texas Scottish Rite Children s Hospital and your Scottish Rite Library & Museum Foundation. ( see page 22 ) 9

16 Chef's Committee Turns 36 By Steve Brazeal, 33 IGH I thought that while I still had a bit of memory left, I would relate a little of the history of the Chef's Committee, so that we might remember those who have for years given their time to make the Reunions and Stated Meetings a little more enjoyable. In doing this, I hope to recognize those who have given of their time and talent to the Fraternity on the Chef's Committee, while not forgetting the hard work that so many other committees perform at the greatest Scottish Rite Valley in Texas! The committee began in 1976 through the direction of Roy Richard Ricky Dixon, 32 KCCH, who assembled 15 other able-bodied souls to start preparing food for the Reunions. I wasn t around back then, but one very dedicated individual, Brother Eddy Erickson, 33 IGH, started with Ricky, and has many stories to tell about the early days of the Chef's Committee. Of course, back then many of the Reunion classes had well over a hundred candidates, and with the addition of the many workers who put on the Reunions, the task of feeding all those Brothers was monumental. I can tell you it took a team effort to prepare all of that food. Brother Dixon passed away in 1984, and for a short stint Brother Richard Farr, 33 IGH, took the helm. A grand ol gentleman by the name of T.R. Malin, 32 KCCH, took over as chairman in T.R., as many of you might know, was a tireless worker and one of the most kind-hearted men I ve ever known. He utilized his cooking skills beyond the Scottish Rite, and was instrumental in forming a group out at Hella Shrine called the 101 s, where he worked in the kitchen for many, many years serving the Brothers. T.R. continued to assist at the Shrine well into his 90 s. In 1990, Brother Larry Winkle, 33 IGH, took over as chairman of the committee. Larry s love for the Scottish Rite and cooking made him a natural for the position. To this day, you ll see Brother Winkle at every Reunion. He still arrives at the kitchen at 4:00 a.m. with his apron on and always a smile, ready to work. He is also currently Treasurer of the Dallas Scottish Rite Bodies, and 1978 Ken Ayers Bill Cadwalder Fox Cashell Ricky Dixon Charles Doty Bill Douglas Charles Hanes John Hardy Phil Hansford Harry Jacobsen Homer King Frank Laning T.D. In 1996, undoubtedly the kindest man I ve ever met, Brother Clem Kathman, 33 IGH, took over as chairman of the committee. A little story about Brother Clem is that he was in the Bataan Death March during WWII. I can t even imagine what he went through during that experience, but he never spoke of it. His gentle nature spoke volumes about his character. Brother Clem just recently passed away, but his spirit will ever remain a part of the Dallas Scottish Rite. In 2003 the kitchen was taken over by a paid employee but that lasted only a couple of years. The Chef's Committee took back the cooking duties in 2005, and Brother Ed Kirkpatrick, 33 IGH, became the unofficial chairman of the Committee. Ed was officially named chairman in 2009 and currently holds that position. Brother Ed, as you may know, was General Secretary for the Dallas Scottish Rite for a time and his tireless efforts to better the Craft are distinguished, to say the least. Finally I would like to recognize a few of our longtime committee members who have withstood the test of time. Brother Eddy Erickson has been on the committee from day one, making him the elder of the group with 36 years of service. Brother Larry Winkle started in 1984 and now has 28 years of service. I began in 1991, putting me at 21 years of service. Records show that Brother Ed Kirkpatrick came on board in 1995, but I m pretty sure it was actually 1993, so he has 19 years of service. Brother Frank Todd, 33 IGH, (better known as Mr. Butter ) began in 1996, giving him 16 years of dedicated service. There are numerous others who have given their time and efforts and are listed below, along with the year when they came on board. If for some reason you were ever a part of the Chef's Committee and were not listed, please let me know. We tried to find all of the old records but they could very well be incomplete. Thanks to all those who served in the past and to those who still make it down to the Reunions at 4:00 a.m. See you in the food line! 1989 Roy Reed 1990 Dean Anderson Nicholas Butler Joel Denison Earl Huenergarth Raymond Hulse Clem Kathman Elmo Woods 1991 Steve Brazeal Alton Edwards Ernie Hale Charles Kirksey 1992 Ed Peters Jimmy Walden 1993 Barry Dyson Lonnie Welch 1995 Ed Kirkpatrick Robert Shaw Grady Smith Jerald Smith 1996 Jim Adcock Charles Cummings George Logan John Siotos Bob Stanley Frank Todd 1997 Ed Callaway Jim Walters 2000 Melton Aricheta Don Higgins Roger Nelson Robert Plunk Mike Wright 2001 Chester Harrison Bob King 2003 Doug Bankston Mitchell Duplechan Ken Flournoy Larry Christensen Jim Fulcher Bob Jensen Wendell Miller Steve Moore Mike Seabolt Tommy Thornton

Once again, we have provided this service to a police departments newly formed bicycle patrol unit. The Red Oak Police Department has now formed a bicycle patrol unit with the help of Dallas Scottish Rite Masons. Two new police bikes, equipped for action, were purchased and provided to their newly formed unit. Bikes were ordered then outfitted in accordance with police patrol standards.
