1 FROM REV. VINCENT BLACK On May 20, the feast of Pentecost, Bishop Williams visited us at Ascension to baptize 3 people, confirm 5, receive 3 into the Episcopal Church, and bless the reaffirmation of 2 members to Christ and the Church. A total of 13 members took a big step in their faith journey as members of the Body of Christ, the Church. We had 100 people together for the beautiful worship service and lunch afterwards with Bishop Williams and his wife, Lynnette. After lunch, the bishop met with the vestry to hear about the life of the parish. Bishop Williams shared in his sermon that he uses the Church of the Ascension as an example of a place where the Holy Spirit is moving and is actively engaged. He referenced joining us for our Thanksgiving dinner and his plans to check out Frankfurter Fridays this summer. In conversations with members and the vestry it became very clear that Church of the Ascension is not an in and out Sunday only kind of place. Instead, it is a very active place all week long. It is a place of study, prayer, and ministry. It is a place that when we gather on Sundays to worship God we like to hang out with each other afterwards to live and celebrate the Good News! Roger and I are taking a big step moving into the rectory on June 1st. We are drawn to live at Ascension House because of the active participation in the life of the community that we experience in the parish. We are moving not only into a beautiful house that has been carefully and intentionally restored and beautified but into a parish that is really praying into following and imitating Jesus Christ. We look forward to this next phase of our journey in faith with you. With deep gratitude to God for the blessing of serving as your priest, Father Vincent Inside this Issue Message from Fr. 2 FROM CORKY THACKER, SENIOR WARDEN Senior Warden s Report PAGE 2 The Church of the Ascension was well represented last month at a joint workshop on stewardship presented by the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio and the Northeastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. I was pleased to join Father Black, Michael Crowdes, David and Sue Campion, and Jim Weiss at Creating a Culture of Generosity in your Church hosted at Christ the Redeemer church in Brecksville on May 5. Our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Mark Hollingsworth, Jr., spoke about the spirituality of giving. Stewardship includes how we care for what God has given us, how we treat each other, and how we share our resources. He views giving as a spiritual discipline, like prayer and service; all are things God gives us to do for our salvation, with the goal being to give ourselves fully to God. Completing the pledge card and writing checks for contributions is the easy part versus remembering Thy will be done, he said. They re calisthenics to help me become a disciple to God. Bishop Hollingsworth makes a practice of writing checks for his usual annual donations on his birthday as a thanksgiving to God for his life. He also stressed the need to give the church our time, talent and treasure not separate pieces that compensate for omission of others, because the integration of all three is necessary to be healthy. While at different times of our lives the proportions will shift due to our conditions, he made a comparison to his four-cylinder Indian motorcycle that needs air, oil and gasoline; he can t omit any of them or change proportions very much, or the bike will become parts. The Rev. Abraham Allende, Bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, said we need to focus on the mission of the church and ask ourselves how we can help, and how many people we can help with what we give, rather than how much we can afford to give in time, talent and treasure. He said he was touched by the generosity of many homebound congregants who insisted on giving checks when he visited that he guessed were beyond their means. But they did it because it was important to them. Bishop Allende stated that we serve a God of abundance, and scripture reminds us of that. In Genesis, God gave us everything that we need, but not all that we want. Abundance is provided to the children of Israel in the desert, and in feeding the 5,000 with the loaves and the fishes. And our currency is imprinted with In God We Trust. He said Jesus was not against money; what matters is our attitude about it and those around us. Both bishops and other speakers stressed the need for year-round stewardship not just talking about it during pledge month, although that is a specific time for personal goal-setting. Making giving a consistent exercise helps build a community where it s OK to talk about money and generosity. We were told we need to do this together, to explore giving as a spiritual discipline and tell what it is like, sharing our experiences. And that lay people should be very involved in the asking. I agree with this; after all, it is our church, our spiritual home. Bishop Hollingsworth said that we need to help each other become conscious of what giving does for us. So, I ll continue sharing additional topics from this workshop and some of my experiences in future reports. Sincerely, Corky Thacker, Senior Warden God loves you. No exceptions.
