Dove Tales The Newsletter of Emmanuel Episco pal Church February 2019 When were you born? Dear Friends in Christ, Churches often list the birthdays of parishioners week by week, and some have a little ceremony of blessing during the service for them. Nothing wrong with that, but I ve always thought it s more appropriate to take note of parishioners baptismal date rather than their birthday. Baptism is a second birth that delivers one from the bondage of sin and death into the glory of the children of God (Romans 8:21). It s the anniversary of becoming a member of -- grafted into, as the 1928 Prayer Book says -- Christ s Body, the Church. Birthdays already get plenty of attention. Baptismal days? Not so much. Here s a task for every member of Emmanuel. Send the date of your baptism to Trudy Bavolack in the church office. It may require some digging. Years ago I found mine in an old Prayer Book that was given to me by a godfather. Similarly, the date may be recorded in an old Bible in your possession. Or call the church where you were baptized; they can look it up in their parish register. If you don t know the name of the church, your parents (if still living) may. Or try any church where you ve been a member. As we gather the dates, we ll start publishing them in Dove Tales each month. Next month I ll include some ideas for observing this red-letter day in your life. On another matter: I am thinking about, and consulting with others about, shortening the Sunday bulletin to conserve precious resources -- including the time of our Parish Administrator and volunteers. So, a heads-up: don t be surprised if you encounter a new format in the near future. God s blessings and all good wishes to you and yours, Bruce + The Rev. Bruce Birdsey 1
The Emmanuel Book Group On March 28 th Kaye Carrithers will lead the discussion of The Longevity Project by Howard S. Friedman and Leslie R. Martin at the EBGB meeting. Please contact Betsy Edwards for further information or inquiry about the reading group at Building Security Anyone entering our buildings must turn the alarm off immediately upon entering. If this is not done and the alarm goes off and Henrico Police respond, we are now being charged by Henrico County. There is no charge for the first false alarm but the fees increase with each additional alarm and if we reach a seventh false alarm in a six-month period, police responses to our premises will cease. Certain conditions must be met to reinstate the service. We had three false alarms reported to police during December, so we all need to be diligent that we use the security alarm system properly. Everyone with a master key needs to have the following phone numbers in hand in case the security alarm goes off and the code is not entered right away. (always try to enter the code again even if the alarm has stopped ringing and it will reset if it has only been a few seconds). Right now these numbers are just for the Parish Hall alarm. There is a phone at the end of the hallway right outside of the Rector s office. This system will soon include the church and the BEC; we will let you know as soon as this happens. Alarms Inc. Central Station phone # Call this number and tell them the code and NOT to send the police (that is if you are here and everything is okay) Call this number: if you do not get the first number in time and ask them to CANCEL the dispatch. If you do not do this, we will be charged. Wine & Cheese Social You are invited to a Wine & Cheese Social on Friday, February 15 th at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Carolyn and Butch Snyder, Creston Road, Glen Allen, VA Please come join us! Bring your favorite bottle of wine! Cheese and crackers and soft drinks will be provided. If you have a favorite appetizer, please feel free to bring it also. Sign-up sheet is in the back of the church! 2
Vestry News and Notes VESTRY HIGHLIGHTS Reviewed the 2018 Financials with the Treasurer, Lilly Weber. Approved the 2019 Budget with thanks to Mary Jo Wigglesworth and the Finance Commission for all their hard work. The Rev. Birdsey recommended a trial on a new profile for the bulletin to save money and staff hours. He will implement it soon. Composed a list of topics to be discussed at the February Vestry Workshop. Recognized Sue Davis for her time and service on the Vestry the last three years. New Vestry We welcome our newly elected Vestry members David Bivens, Ellen Coates, and Butch Snyder. We thank our returning members Ed Dalton, Marilyn Malone, Suzanne Messerschmidt, Hank Milligan, Paul Nelson, and John Weber. Our officers for this year are Hank Milligan, Sr. Warden; Butch Snyder, Jr. Warden; and Marilyn Malone, Register. We especially thank Sue Davis, our outgoing Senior Warden, for her hard work and dedication. Church Ceiling Work On January 28 th, we began repair work on the church ceiling. Our Sunday services on Feb. 3 and Feb. 10 will be held in the Parish Hall, as will Wednesday services on Feb. 6, and Feb. 13. Notes from the church office: Included in this issue of Dove Tales is a contribution envelope for the Virginia Episcopalian. Your donation helps cover the cost of sending the magazine to every home in the parish. The church office will be closed Monday, February 18 th. Staff Announcement We sadly say goodbye to Tammy Shackelford, our Communications Coordinator, who is leaving us to begin a full-time job in February. Tammy will still maintain the Emmanuel web site. We wish Tammy well with her new beginning. Inclement Weather - In the case of inclement weather that would affect our Sunday morning services, we will list cancellations on WTVR Channel 6, WWBT Channel 12, and WRIC Channel 8. In the case of bad weather during the week, the Church office will close at the discretion of the Interim Rector. 3
Outreach Commission December s Service of the White Gift honored Coal Pit Learning Center, a non-profit pre-school which opened in Henrico County in 1976 to serve 3-5 year olds from the Lakeside and Glen Allen areas. Ordinarily, those attending Coal Pit would not receive the benefits of a preschool experience; however, Coal Pit provides children from low-income families the educational skills necessary to succeed in school. You selected tags from the White Gift tree, purchased more than 150 items, and wrapped them in white paper to symbolize that each gift is equal, none greater or less than the other. Your Outreach donations also provided the school with a new educational playhouse. The FOOD Faith Garden will begin a new growing season beginning March If you or a friend would like a one-year lease of a 4 x 20-foot garden plot for $10, please let Outreach s Marilyn Malone at know. We ask that a portion of what you raise be donated for local food closets and those in need. February Adult Forum Schedule Adult Forum is held Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall. February 3, 2019 NO FORUM (Due to roof repairs in the church and service relocation to Parish Hall) February 10, 2019 NO FORUM (Due to roof repairs in the church and service relocation to Parish Hall) February 17, 2019 HIS HANDMAIDS Performance - His Handmaids uses liturgical dance to lead people to worship. The group is made up of girls as young as age 7 - being a dancer is not a pre-requisite, but knowing Jesus is! Using graceful and reverent movements that interpret the words of sacred songs, the girls create moving pictures that stir up the heart and soul to worship the Creator. His Handmaids will gently usher you into the presence of God, and will invite you to come, worship and bow down. February 24, 2019 The Rev. Barbara Duncan will present Me Too: Unsung Women of the Bible. 4
Upcoming Events & Special Dates Wine & Cheese Social at Westminster-Canterbury The Pastoral Care Commission is once again hosting a Wine and Cheese Social at Westminster-Canterbury on Thursday, February 21, 2019 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. We are fortunate to have reserved the newly renovated Towers Roof Terrace, so do come and check it out. If needed, transportation can be arranged. Please RSVP to Dale Revell at or by to dale.revell@gmail.com. Bring a friend to... Join in the fun with dinner at 6:30 p.m. or just come for the theological discussion from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Come experience this peaceful worship service, then stay for dinner in the Parish Hall.
