2 Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems. - Scott Adams The authority to forgive sins or to withhold forgiveness was given to the church. This authority is called the Office of the Keys. Protestant Christians have disagreed more in the years since the Reformation about the doctrine of the ministry than about any other article of faith. At the heart of debate is the understanding of the Office of the Keys and its relationship with the Office of the Pastor. Back before there was a LCMS (established 1847) there was a group of German Lutherans in Missouri who found themselves in a quagmire after the demise of Martin Stephan who was their Bishop. At the time the colony was stuck in a state-run church paradigm. In Germany there was limited distinction between Church and State. German congregations had their pastors appointed to them by the State. Pastors then, drew their authority, not from calling congregations but from the State itself. If pastors drew their authority to be clergy from the State then the congregations drew their authority to be a church from its pastor. After their migration to Missouri (1838) it was proven that Bishop Stephan was a deplorable character who abused his position for personal gratification and financial gain. Those revelations lead to his excommunication and also expulsion from the colony. As a result of Stephen s excommunication, the colony began to question the authority of its remaining pastors and in-turn its identity as a church. Were they even a church without Bishop Stephen? Would they need to return to Germany? It was C.F.W. Walther (who later became the 1st LCMS president) who resolved the crises by defining our understanding of the Office of the Keys and the relationship with the Office of the Pastor. We live in that new paradigm. Congregations are churches based on the authority of the Word of God. The Keys belong to the congregation. Pastors only use those Keys through their Call extended by the congregation. It is the Call, not ordination that gives pastors the authority to use the Keys. Our church identity, and the make-up of LCMS itself, is based on C.F.W. Walther s definition. There are other Christians out there who hold different understandings on the doctrine of the ministry and those differences shape their church identity just as ours shape our church identity. 4 Col. George "Bud" Day was posthumously advanced to Brigadier General In June, the Air Force honored Colonel George "Bud" Day during an event at the Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. On hand for the event were his wife Dorie, who accepted the honor, son George Day, Jr, daughter Sandra Day Hearn, and her husband Jimmy. Prior to his death, General Day was a member of Good Shepherd. The flag pole that stands in our courtyard was dedicated in his honor, along with all members who have served. Submitted by Bea Daily You can now manage your contributions online!
