3 Volume 5 Page 3 VBS...It s NOT Just for Kids! Y ou ve probably seen the logo above in the flyers and bulletins for this year s VBS. I don t know about you, but I loved VBS when I was a kid. One of my neighborhood friends and I spent two weeks in VBS one at her church and one at mine. Believe it or not, I can still remember studying Psalm 24 one year! At Holy Spirit, VBS is not just for kids, and that doesn t mean you have to be a helper to participate. Once again this year, I will be teaching a class for youth and adults that will follow the theme verse for the week: Everything is possible with God (Mark 10:27). We ll be discussing the same stories the kids do: A Roman Officer Has Faith in Jesus (Matthew 8:5-13) Jesus Brings Lazarus Back to Life (John 11) Jesus is Arrested and Put on Trial (Matthew 26:36-27:31) Jesus Dies and Comes Back to Life (Matthew 27:32-28:20) Jesus Makes a Beachside Breakfast for His Friends (John 21:1-14) The lessons are independent, so you won t be lost if you can t come every night. 4 Page 4 The Spirit YAGM? What s That? Y AGM is the acronym for the ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission program or for a Young Adult in Global Mission. The program facilitates year long placements for young adults around the world; the young adults work with ELCA partner organizations. I will be serving as a YAGM for the year in Szarvas (Sarvash), Hungary, a town of 17,000 in south -eastern part of the country. I will be working at a Slovak-speaking Lutheran Church teaching English at their school, helping with confirmation, and working with a gifted Roma Student program. For the most part it will be like working at a small-town church. However, like many places in Europe, Romani (gypsy) communities are systematically excluded from access to services such as sewage and electricity, and Romani children are by and large not allowed to attend school, or do much of anything with non-romani (Gadje) children. The Roma live in abject poverty side-by-side with the relative prosperity of their Gadje neighbors, and it seems like no one cares. Hungarian scholar, Robert Koulish, puts it this way, Indeed, for 500 years or more, Roma have never had a day where autonomy was allowed, when they had trust, were not suspects or had some say about their future. Racism is alive and well in Hungary. Luckily, I have the opportunity to accompany those in Hungary, Romani, and Gadje on their journey toward a world where there is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer free or slave, there is no longer male or female; for you [we] are all one in Christ Jesus. 5 Page 5 The Spirit Stephen Ministry Update As Holy Spirit continues to move forward in the process of establishing a Stephen Ministry here, the logo will be seen in more and more places. So I thought it might be good to explain what it means. The logo tells the story of a care receiver s journey from brokenness to wholeness through the transforming poser of the cross of Jesus. It serves as a simple reminder that it is not the Stephen Minister who restores a person to wholeness. Rather, it is only through the cross of Jesus that a person can be made whole. Pastor Robin and I will be attending the Stephen Leader s Training Course in Pittsburgh from July 29 to August 4. After we return, I will be ready to start training our first Stephen Ministers. In the meantime, please keep this program in your prayers as we prepare for a major step forward in our caring ministry. -AIM Linda

6 Volume 5 Page 6 Dear Friends at HSLC, My name is Joe Dundore. I have been a music teacher in the Carroll County Public School system for 7 years now, and currently teach music to elementary students at Piney Ridge Elementary School. I also direct the JoeyDCares Rock Orchestra, a group made up of about 50 musicians including 5 th through 12 th grade students, parents, and others in the community who raise money or awareness for charity. You can see all of the charities we ve helped in just one year on our website: We are hosting our upcoming benefit concert for the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). The WWP helps wounded warriors and their families recover when they come home from war. The event will take place on July 14 th at Century High School, in Sykesville, MD with doors opening at 6:15 pm. People and items in attendance will be Mark Zinno, a retired Iraq war veteran from as MC, a wounded warrior who lost three limbs will share his story, a magician, the Ravens mascot Poe, a silent auction, and of course the 50-piece JoeyDCares Rock Orchestra playing soul, Motown, Rock, and other styles in the name of charity! The orchestra is hoping to raise $10,000 that night for the sold-out 800-seat venue, so that we can help the WWP help the 200,000 young men and women who have come home with brain injuries, 16,000 amputees, and for the thousands who have never come home; the Wounded Warrior Project helps these people and their families. New Website Address! H oly Spirit s website has a new address. It s now located at (The change is the addition of md.) Please update any links and favorites lists that you have. This was necessary because Microsoft changed its policy for hosting websites. It had to be done quickly, so I didn t have time to do the remodeling that was anticipated. I m still planning to do that, though, so please visit the site and think about what you would like to see out there. What s unnecessary? What s not there that should be? How can we best present our congregation to the world? What s on your wish list?
