Followed by our annual congregational meeting to elect 3 new council members. Sunday, November 25 Next Week: Sunday School classes from 9:40-10:35am. Join us for our Family Advent Celebration in the CFC during the Sunday School hour. All are invited! Children sermons at both worship services today. 5 2018 MIDWEEK ADVENT SERIES The birth of a certain child two thousand years ago in Bethlehem prompted a poet in the nineteenth century to ask a very uncommon question in a hymn: What Child Is This? It was an uncommon question because it asked about the birth of a very uncommon child. Come with penitent and hope-filled hearts, as we gather together each Wednesday of Advent in the Sanctuary at 7:00pm to prepare for the birth of our Lord by singing Haste, haste to bring Him laud, Hail, hail the Word made flesh, and Joy, joy, for Christ is born, The babe, the son of Mary! 6 OUR NOMINEES FOR CHURCH COUNCIL CHUCK KNIBBE Chuck was born in Spring Branch Texas and has been a member of St. Paul Lutheran all of his life. During that time, he has served on the church council, taught Sunday School, and sang in the choir since He retired from the stock brokerage and investment banking business in Since then, he and his wife Sharon have been living on and managing the family cattle ranch in Spring Branch. Eighteen years ago, they formed a joint venture with the Marriott Corporation to bring convention groups out to the ranch for a Texas experience. They have two children and four grandchildren. Growing up, Chuck s plan was to become a Lutheran pastor and in fact graduated from Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. If elected, Chuck will prayerfully consider all issues pertaining to the mission of St. Paul. JACKIE OLDFIELD Jackie was born and raised in the Bulverde area, first across the road from Specht s Store and later at Specht s Store. Jackie attended Bulverde Elementary and then Canyon High School. She is an active disciple at St. Paul and was an member of Junior Lutherans and Luther League. She was confirmed at St. Paul in 1965 and taught Sunday School and VBS. She graduated from Texas A & I University, Kingsville in 1973 with a degree in Elementary Education with a certification to teach Kindergarten. Jackie married her high school sweetheart in 1972 and they had 2 children, Ryan and Michelle. They later divorced. She taught public school for 30 years, mostly Kindergarten and then in a private Christian School for 5 years. After the private school closed, she became a substitute teacher for Comal ISD for 5 years. Jackie is now retired and does a lot of volunteer work in the Bulverde community. She lives on the old homestead across from Specht s Store. She is excited to be a part of the church council if elected. JERRY PENSHORN Jerry and his wife Mary, are lifelong residents of South Texas. Jerry graduated from high school in San Antonio and college in College Station, Texas. He was raised and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He served six years in the US Army Reserve. Jerry and Mary are blessed with two daughters and five grandchildren (who live in Hondo, Lubbock and New Braunfels). They moved to Bulverde in 2002 after having lived near Seguin for twenty-four years. Mary retired from teaching middle school in Jerry is a cancer survivor. He retired from a career in law enforcement in 2005, 2009 and He has been a licensed Auctioneer for over twenty years. He still does country auctions whenever and wherever he is called. He and Mary enjoy traveling and keeping up with the grandkids activities. Jerry collects an assortment of old things and thoroughly enjoys searching for small collectibles. He has been blessed to be a part of the music ministry since they joined St. Paul in He was previously appointed to serve an unexpired term on the Church Council in 2004 and was elected to serve an additional term in Jerry looks forward to helping out when he is called. KELLY SCHUMACHER Kelly is originally from Missouri and was confirmed and baptized at St. Matthew Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Lee s Summit. She received a B.A. in Accounting in 1988 and MBA from the University of Central Missouri in Kelly and her husband Chuck have been in Spring Branch since 1999 where they have raised their two wonderful children, Rebekah (21) and Charles (15). Kelly has been at Beldon Roofing Company since 2010 and is currently V.P. of Budgeting and Analytics. Her family is truly blessed to have found a home at St. Paul. She is currently completing her third year on council two as Treasurer. *Note: Kelly is eligible to run for council again due to a change to our bylaws and constitution that was approved by a congregational vote on September 10, 2017 allowing council member to run for no more than 2 consecutive 3 year terms.
