2 Now that I look back, I realize that a life predicated on being obedient and taking orders is a very comfortable life indeed. Living in such a way reduces to a minimum one s own need to think. - Nazi Adolf Eichmann at his trial, 1960 In 1961, psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted an experiment to discover to what extent ordinary people would submit to those in authority. His observations lead him to develop the Milgram Agency Theory to account for the alacrity with which people would behave in horrific ways. The theory suggests that we have two different states of ethics that guide our morality. In the autonomous' state, our personal ethics guide our actions. We make our own choices and take responsibility for our own actions. However, in the agentic state, people s actions are guided by an outside authority s ethics. In this state, people act as agents to carry out the will for those in authority even when those actions would normally conflict with their own morality. They transfer the responsibility for their actions onto the authority that directed their behavior, freeing them to commit atrocities that they would not normally commit on their own. "When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer After the crucifixion of Jesus the Jewish authorities were worried about the foretold resurrection of Christ. They approached the Romans to post guards at the tomb. Pilate tells them to use their own temple guards to secure the tomb (Matt 27:62ff). Ironically, it was these Jewish guards who are among the first witnesses of the resurrection. After the resurrection, when the guards informed their Jewish authorities what had happen during their watch, a monetary transaction took place. The guards bonuses were not for their silence but for their active participation in perpetrating a hoax. Tell people, His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep (Matt 28:13). Reasonable people can conclude that this bit of fake news does not work from the guards perspectives. Sleeping guards would not know who stole the body and therefore cannot identify the group that may have. It is unreasonable to accept that everyone in the guard detail would sleep so soundly that the noise and commotion needed to open a sealed tomb and steal a body would not be heard. But the story was enough to hoodwink those who already wanted to reject Jesus. We are corrupted by sin and live in a fallen world, a place where it seems easier to go along to get along. This is precisely the reason the Word of God became flesh and lived among us, suffered, crucified, died and was buried. Those who want an excuse to deny the resurrection have plenty of excuses and reasons to choose from. But we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that we may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1Peter 2:9). Let us remain faithful until the end to this authority. The Youth Group is encouraged to help with set-up (4:30 PM) and clean-up (immediately after the worship service). Please watch for sign-up sheets in the Narthex if you are willing to donate food items for the meals. Dinner is served from 5:30 until 6:15 PM. The Fellowship Board is serving desserts after our meal instead of after worship service this year. Join us as we prepare ourselves to remember the death and resurrection of our Lord, and in that remembrance, may we witness the Gospel of Jesus which forgives and removes all our sin. Our community Easter Egg Hunt is an opportunity for us to share the Good News that the tomb is empty. Your help is needed in the setup (8:00 AM) and cleanup (11:00 AM). Palm Sunday Palm Harvest We are responsible for preparing the palms for Palm Sunday. Harvesting is Saturday, April 13 th at 2:00 PM (after the Easter Egg Hunt). Seder Meal We are in the early planning stages for a Youth Group Seder Meal with your families on Sunday, April 14 th.

5 It s for your own good. How many times haven t we heard that in our lifetimes, and whether we believed it or not, probably most of the time this statement was true. We guarantee that attending the 38th LWML Biennial Convention in Mobile, Alabama, this year will be for your own good! From June in the Mobile Convention Center there will be inspiring speakers, Bible studies, convention business, mission grants, and the joyous fellowship of LWMLers from all over the country. You don t want to miss the uplifting worship experiences and proclaimers, including Rev. Dr. Gregory Walton, President of the Florida-Georgia District, who will be the proclaimer at the closing service. In addition, the Host Committee needs your help; the host districts are the Florida-Georgia, Gulf States, and Louisiana-Mississippi districts which means that all LWMLers in those districts are being called on to assist in putting on the convention. Make plans to attend. Check your district s website for the Call for Workers form, and submit it as soon as possible; you will be able to reduce your registration cost to only $70 if you work at least two 4-hour shifts. (There is a special registration form for workers.) Pray for the LWML, its mission, and the convention. Keep informed about the convention details at Convention Central at and in issues of the Lutheran Woman s Quarterly. Remember, it s for your own good! Divine Destination, Flight 316 was held on February 16, Wendysue is a musical artist that travels around the country leading workshops, concerts, and worships. Wendysue invited Susanna Lynn, a local musical artist to join her on this flight. Bea Daily first heard her when she led the music at the LWML Convention in Albuquerque in 2017, then invited her to Good Shepherd last March. The LWML women served as the Flight Stewardesses, with Bea Daily as the head flight attendant. Thanks to Al Hemmer for his help set up and take down and Lance Hofman for helping with the audio / visual. Susanna Lynn Wendysue All went well as 59 boarded our flight at 9:00 AM Saturday morning to study God s word, make new friends, make a fan for people in a local assisted living home, and a line dance for exercise. With all this activity we still landed right on time at 3:45 PM at the gate of GSLC.

6 Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversations about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting here at Good Shepherd on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM. March 3 rd Allergic to Food: Living in an Incredible, Inedible World, features a filmed interview with nutritionist Nicole Eckman and provides a glimpse into the life of a woman coping with celiac disease. March 10 th How the Next Generation Will Change the World: Get ready for the millennial revolution, includes a film featuring millennials sharing how their values will shape our culture as they increasingly grow in power and influence. March 17 th Angels: Are They Reaching Out to You? features the filmed story of a man who believes meeting an angel in the Rocky Mountains saved his life during a hunting trip. March 24 th Family Do-Over: Is It Ever Too Late? features a screening of the award-winning short film The Ride. March 31 st This brave woman s story puts sexual abuse out on the table for discussion, says Lifetree representative Craig Cable. We ll consider why the cycle of abuse in families is so difficult to break and how those who ve suffered childhood sexual abuse can find healing. Now Showing March 2019
