We have had testimonies from the pulpit from church members, and we will have members of the Second Mile Committee visiting with Sunday School classes for the next two Sundays to explain the impact this campaign will make in our church. Please know that every gift will make a significant impact in reducing the principal of our loan and in blessing and strengthening our church s ministry in the future. Rather than have one true Commitment Sunday, we ask that you pray over your commitment and then place your commitment card in the offering plate on one of the next two special Sunday services (Baccalaureate Sunday [May 7] or Mother s Day [May 14]). You may also turn it in at any time to the church office. There are additional commitment cards and brochures at each entry to the sanctuary should you need them. Our Second Mile Committee will give a campaign update to our church family on Sunday, May 21st. Thank you for your faithful service to our Lord and to His ministry at Madison UMC.

4 Bishop Swanson on Recent Declaratory Decision Dear members of the Mississippi Conference of The United Methodist Church, On the evening of April 28, 2017 I received word that the Judicial Council ruled that the election and consecration of Rev. Karen Oliveto is a violation of our church law. However, according to the Judicial Council s ruling in Decision 1341, the bishop remains in good standing, until an administrative or judicial process is completed. Some of you may be wondering: Q: Bishop Swanson, what happened and what does this ruling mean? How can one be found in violation of church law and in good standing at the same time? A: Keep in mind, the question asked of the Judicial Council was a declaratory decision about the election and consecration of a self-avowed practicing homosexual as a bishop of The United Methodist Church. The council declared this act a violation of church law. There has been a complaint brought against Karen Oliveto that is already in motion, but she remains in good standing because whenever a complaint is brought forth against anyone we must honor our commitment as The United Methodist Church to give a fair process and hearing. The Judicial Council did not have jurisdiction over the judicial or administrative complaints filed against Rev. Oliveto since those have not been processed yet. The United Methodist Church always seeks to honor fair process, so now we allow the judicial and/or administrative process to proceed with the benefit of the Judicial Council ruling. The Judicial Council's ruling is an interpretation of our church law which is outlined in the Book of Discipline but the Commission on a Way Forward continues its General Conference-mandated task of offering the Council of Bishops suggested paths that might lead to action being taken at the called Special Session of General Conference. This session is set to convene February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri to act only on the issue of human sexuality. So I urge you to continue praying for God's direction for The United Methodist Church. I realize that there will be different reactions to the Judicial Council ruling and therefore I call upon all Mississippi United Methodists to remain in prayer as we allow our process to unfold and reveal greater clarity to her status. I ask that you continue to respond in Christian love to those whom you may disagree with over this ruling. Let us remain faithful and focused on ministry and God's mission as the Holy Spirit guides us. Do not get weary little children. God is not done with us, yet. So keep praying, stay focused and keep the main thing the main thing. Yours in Christ, Bishop James E.
