I do know, however, that for some of our church family, the Herald is the primary means of staying connected to what is going on at AHBC. For those of you who have not yet been made aware through other means, the Arlington Heights church family is currently facing an important decision. In order to address a few current problems with our facilities (bathroom repair, nursery space, fellowship hall space) and to plan for the future of our growing church, the Facilities Evaluation Committee (which is our Long Range Planning Committee ), together with a unanimous Church Council (35 leaders of all departments), is recommending that we accept the offer from Calvary Baptist Church to assume ownership of all of their facilities on Market Street at no cost and, in turn, give our facilities, minus the missionary houses, to the Jackson County Baptist Association s Spanish-speaking church plant, Iglesia Bautista Fuente da Vida, who has also outgrown their current facilities in Orange Grove. I confess that the previous sentence wasn t one I ever thought I would be typing. The idea sounded strange to every one of us the first time we heard it, but the offer is very real and, after much consideration, the leaders of our church believe that it is the Lord s open door for our future. I know that reading the Herald is not the ideal setting for hearing news of this importance, but we wanted to get the word out because the two committees will be bringing the recommendation to the church for discussion and a vote on Sunday, May 22, in a special business meeting following the morning worship service. Posted on the bulletin board: Thank you notes from Jan & Harold Walters, Gulf Coast Community College BSU, Good News Prison Ministry A birth announcement from Jaymie & Meagan Smith Wednesday nights at 5 pm, reservations required. The cost is $3 for adults and $1 for kids 12 and under. 5/4 Jambalaya 5/11 Chicken Tenders 5/18 Fried Catfish, Coleslaw & Baked Beans 5/25 Frito Chili Cheese Pie Many in our church have already walked through the facilities on Market Street but I know that many of you have not. On Sunday, May 15, from 3 until 6pm, we will have an Open House for people to tour the facilities. At 6pm, we will all worship together for the first time in the sanctuary that, pending the church vote on the 22nd, could become our new home. In the meantime, please feel free to contact the church office or any of the members who have been part of the decision making process. They want to hear from you and make sure all of your questions are answered and that you understand their thinking. The first priority for all of this is the continued, supernatural unity that currently exists among the people of Arlington. Don t hesitate to call and ask questions big or small. I don t claim to have any special connection to God or insight into His secret will. I make up my mind about things by praying, looking for evidence of His leadership, seeking council from the people I look up to, and using common sense. All of those things have led me to believe that this is indeed God s will for our church. We say all of the time that the church isn t the building, it s the people. Lord willing, on May 22, we will get a chance to prove it. I m praying for all of us and the Future of God s Kingdom. Pastor Michael

4 A message from David Note: As many of you know, I am currently working on a Masters of Divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. This is the fifth article in a series that I am adapting from a paper I wrote for my systematic theology class in the Fall 2015 semester. Previous articles in the series appeared in the December ( 15), January, March, and April issues of The Herald. We serve a God who is three in one. What does that mean exactly? I plan to wrap up this series over the next three months by looking at what scripture says about the three in one God. Let s start where scripture starts. Is there one God, or more than one God? The Bible is clear from the very first verse that there is only one God. Genesis 1:1 states, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. There is one God who created and one God who has authority over the universe. There is also one God who calls a people to Himself in Israel and the church. Deuteronomy 6:4 says, Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. As God describes Himself to His people through the prophet Isaiah, He says, I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. (Is. 45:5-6) Commenting on this passage, Bruce Ware notes, God wants to go on record that he is able to do his work only because he alone is the true and living God. Of course, we don t need to think only the Old Testament teaches that there is only one God! John 17:3 speaks of God as, the only true God. First Corinthians 8:6 says that for us there is one God. First Timothy 2:5 tells us There is one God. In the early church, even before the doctrine of the Trinity was fully developed, there was general agreement that scripture clearly taught that there is only one God. We don t apologize for believing this truth. There is one God, and one name under heaven by which men are saved. This does bring up a question though, if there is one God, how can we believe that God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all God? We ll look at this question next month. David Student Ministry Fundraiser On the first Sunday of each month the Student ministry will have breakfast available at 8:45 am by the Howard Taylor Building. Donations will go towards their summer mission trips. What Then Should We Sing? A few weeks ago, David, Ramiro Claros, and I had the privilege of attending Together for the Gospel, a pastor s conference held in Louisville, KY every other year. Along with the preaching times, there were also breakout sessions held on specific issues and topics in the church. One session I attended was entitled What Then Should We Sing? I m sure you can see why this session caught my eye! The scripture we looked at was Colossians 3:16-17 which says, Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Here are some observations from this text. 1) Our singing must be shaped and fashioned by scripture, Let the word of Christ dwell in your richly. Hymns and songs are little theology lessons, therefore our songs should be holy and their content should be sacred, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom. 2) Passionless singing is an oxymoron, we sing with emotion, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 3) And ultimately, singing is for the glory of God, And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Did you know, in scripture, there are over 400 direct commands in scripture to sing!? I think God is a fan of singing! Music is a gift from God, to be used to bring glory to His name. What we sing matters; therefore let s wrap our singing in theology, as we sing the deep, rich truths of God! For His Glory, Peyton Worship Choir Rehearsal All adults are welcome! Wednesday PM in the sanctuary. Nursery provided....mr. & Mrs. Red Ehlers in the death of Sheri s mother, Mrs. Ada Mary Butz...Mr. & Mrs. Jamie Smith in the death of Meagan s grandfather, Mr. Sammy McArthur......Mr. & Mrs. Mike Wixon, Mr. & Mrs. Jared Becker and Audrey Becker in the death of their father, grandfather & great grandfather, Mr. Howard Kapp......Mr. & Mrs. Bill Pope, Mr. & Mrs. Michael Woods and family in the death of their uncle, Mr. Herbert Green... He is welcomed home by big sister, Amelia Kate Smith. And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak for your servant hears. 1 Samuel 3:10
