Group-think has swallowed up most of us and separated us like cattle into pens. Lost in all of this is the truth about the human being. We know that God is in Himself a community. In John 17, Jesus describes His one-ness with the Father and Holy Spirit. It is for this reason that He created humans male and female and said it was not good for Adam to remain alone. As we watch the news and think of God s design, it ought to break our hearts, not for the reasons the world tells us, but for the basic wrongness of the human condition. We were created for one-ness and the blessed peace it produces. The absence of that creates this, a sure sign of a future without God as our orbit. Added to this is the loss of the true sanctity of the life of every human. The world ascribes a measure of value to every person based on his/her decisions and pattern of life. Some measure by the number of weeks in the womb. God doesn t measure our value that way. In Genesis 4, after Cain murdered his brother Abel, God doesn t do as Cain feared and pronounce pardon on anybody who took his life. Instead, God declares, If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. The point is that even Cain has been created in God s own image and that only God has the rights to his bloodline. Beloved, as we all continue watching and grieving and praying, remember these things: 1) God expects us to be above the world s group-think. Think from the Bible and not the news. 2) Jesus pronounced blessedness on the peacemakers who speak up for unity and not division; 3) and the debates have gone too far when they start turning bloodshed. Be in prayer as we continue to seek to bring the Gospel of peace to a world in desperation. 4 A message from David Note: This is the fourth article in a series that I am adapting from a paper I wrote for my systematic theology class in the Fall 2015 semester. I ll admit this series has taken much longer to wrap up than I expected. For the few that are paying attention, I apologize that I missed June s article. This has been a busy summer! We ve looked at the truth that there is one God, we have seen how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all God, now we want to consider the mystery of the truth that God is both three and one. How can God be one and yet three beings be God? The one God exists in three persons. If you remember, the modalists (think Jesus name Baptism Pentecostal) miss this critical point. They affirm the deity of the members of the Trinity, but fail to recognize Them as distinctly different from one another. It is true that God is one, but as John Frame points out, The Bible does not teach that God is one in the sense of having no plurality or complexity. As we consider the accounts of Jesus Baptism (Matthew 1, Mark 1 & Luke 3). We see Jesus in the water, the Spirit descending as a dove, and the Father speaking from heaven to his beloved Son. Clearly these are not simply modes of one person, but separate persons all together. During His time on earth, Jesus refers to information that is known by the Father only and not Himself (Matthew 24:36 & Mark 13:32). It is not possible for an individual person to both know, and not know a piece of information. Clearly, each member of the Trinity is distinct from the other. The truth that there is only one God who exists in three persons is certainly difficult for our simple minds to comprehend. Difficult truth, however, is no less true! It may seem to some that the Trinitarian position is self-contradicting and therefore untrue. Many outside the church may believe that when Christians refer to the Trinity, they are attempting to claim that 1+1+1=1. Such a claim obviously cannot be defended, and it is not the historical position of the church or what the Bible teaches. As RC Sproul states, Trinity does not mean tritheism, that is, that there are three beings who together are God. The word Trinity is used in an effort to define the fullness of the Godhead both in terms of His unity and diversity. The Trinitarian position is certainly not easy to comprehend, but dare we believe that God must be easy to comprehend? God reveals Himself in scripture as triune and our inability to comprehend the fullness of this truth does not affect its validity. With all that said, it s easy to begin to question if understanding the trinity has value at all. While there is not space in this article to dive into all the ways this wonderful truth impacts our lives, I will share one that I find truly amazing. In fact, I do not believe a discussion of the Trinity would be incomplete without taking time to gaze on the beauty of the Trinitarian involvement in our salvation. The Bible tells us that each person of the Trinity actively participates in the work of saving us. The Father predestines us (Eph. 1:5), draws us (Jn. 6:44), orchestrates the work of the Trinity on our behalf (Gal. 4:4-6), places the sin of the world on the Son (2 Cor. 5:21), and carries out the divine wrath against the Son (Is. 53:10). The Son serves as our redeemer (Gal. 4:4-5), bears the weight of our sin and gives us His righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21), acts as a mediator between us and the Godhead (1 Tim. 2:5), provides satisfactory payment for our sins (1 Jn. 2:2), rescues us from the curse of the law (Gal. 3:13), saves us from the wrath of God (Rom. 5:9), dies on our behalf (Rom. 5:8), and rises to give us new life (Rom. 6:4). The Spirit turns our hearts to God as Father (Gal. 4:6), washes and regenerates us (Titus 3:5), sanctifies us (1 Pet. 1:2), and seals and guarantees our inheritance (Eph. 1:13-14). Certainly all of these lists could go on for pages, but it is clear that each member of the Trinity works not just individually, but in unison with the other, to bring about our eternal redemption. As John Frame states succinctly, We are saved by the eternal purpose of the Father, by the atoning work of the Son, through the power and wisdom of the Spirit. We grow in our understanding of God s grace as we see how each person of the Trinity interacts with the others to bring us out of darkness and into the light. Singing Songs from Questionable Sources The following is an article by Bob Kauflin entitled Singing Songs from Questionable Sources. Bob Kauflin is the Director of Sovereign Grace Music for Sovereign Grace Churches in Louisville, KY and a major influence in my life in the area of worship leading. Over the next few months I ll share from this article as it shares many of the convictions I hold dear in leading worship: 4. Develop a culture that appreciates lyrical content over a brand name. Leaders are often concerned that singing one song will lead people in their congregation to YouTube or a website to hear more songs from the ministry/person. But if the people in your church know you choose songs based on their theology and not their popularity, it won t be as much of an issue. Doing one song by an artist or ministry doesn t necessarily mean you endorse everything about them, just as using a quote from a writer you don t completely agree with doesn t mean you commend their entire theological perspective. 5. Incorporate more old songs into your repertoire. We can minimize the problem of who writes our songs by singing songs that have stood the test of time and are known more for their content than their composers. By the end of his life, Horatio Spafford had come to deny hell, affirm purgatory, and teach universalism. Yet God has used his song, It is Well with My Soul, to encourage hundreds of thousands of Christians in the midst of suffering. The same can be said of William Cowper s song, God Moves in a Mysterious Way. Even though Cowper endured severe bouts of depression and tried to commit suicide at least three times, his words have edified Christians for centuries. When composers are no longer living, older songs don t run the risk of suddenly becoming questionable because of a distracting theology or struggle. Bottom line, if you find a song that communicates biblical truth in a clear, uncompromising, beautiful, singable way, and your congregation is trained to value truth over popularity, you re probably in a position to benefit from it. If you re unsure, you ve got plenty of other songs to choose from.
