A message from OUR PASTOR As most of you are aware by now, I have recently encountered some minor medical problems that have kept me away from the church in the flesh, though I have certainly been with you in spirit. God has used this trial to open my eyes to many things about myself, the human condition, and the powerful impact that a personal medical issue can have on the whole person, body, mind and spirit. It moves my heart, in a new way, to those whose conditions are much worse and less temporary than mine. My time away has also caused my heart to overflow with gratitude for the grace of God in our church. Jessica and I have been blessed with encouraging messages, calls, cards, delicious meals, offers of help in any form as well as the tremendous comfort of knowing that the flock is well cared for by our deacons and members in my absence. The love and understanding our members (you) have demonstrated in allowing me the time I need to recover has been a great blessing that I will not forget. Last, but not least, I thank God for the willingness of gifted teachers to feed the flock in my stead, and the fortitude of our staff in taking on whatever has been necessary and executing, by the grace of God, in a way that makes me a very proud and humbled pastor. If the Lord is willing, I plan to be with you in the flesh at almost full speed this Sunday as we worship the King together. I love you and can t wait to see all of you. Blessings, Pastor Michael Wednesday nights at 5 pm, reservations required. The cost is $3 for adults and $1 for kids 12 and under. 4 A message from David Note: As many of you know, I am currently working on a Masters of Divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. This is the third article in a series that I am adapting from a paper I wrote for my systematic theology class in the Fall 2015 semester. Previous articles in the series appeared in the December 2015 and January 2016 issues of The Herald. As stated in my first article, Wayne Grudem s three statements summarizing biblical teaching on the Trinity will be used as the definition of the Trinity in this series. These three statements are as follows: (1) God is three persons, (2) each person is fully God, (3) there is one God. All non-biblical positions on the trinity deny one of these statements. Last month we looked at the denial of the first statement by evaluating Modalism as taught by the United Pentecostal Church. This month, we will take a look at Arianism as taught by the Jehovah's Witnesses and see how they deny the second statement. Arianism is a teaching attributed to Arius, an elder of the church at Alexandria. His views were condemned at the council of Nicea in A.D Unlike Oneness theology, which affirms the deity of Christ but denies that the God is truly three persons, Arianism denies the Trinity by rejecting the deity of Christ. The Jehovah s Witnesses are an example of modern day Arians. The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society published a short work defending the Arian position called, Should You Believe in the Trinity. The work is subtitled, Is Jesus Christ the Almighty God? The author answers both of the questions posed in the title with an emphatic, no. Instead of recognizing Jesus as God himself and a member of the holy Trinity, Jehovah s Witnesses believe that Jesus was a human, although a perfect one because it was God who transferred the life-force of Jesus to the womb of Mary. Arians interpret the phrase firstborn of all creation in Colossians 1:15 to mean that Jesus was a created being that simply came before creation. They argue that when 1 Corinthians 8:6 says that it is Jesus Christ through whom are all things and through whom we exist it simply means that Christ created the world as the junior partner of the Almighty God. In Should I Believe in The Trinity, the author states that passages like John 1:14, 3:16 and 18; and 1 John 4:9, which say that Jesus was begotten, prove that Jesus cannot be the eternal God, because a being that is eternal could not also be as old as His father. I m sure you can see the Arian position is difficult to discuss without becoming intensely jealous for the glory that the Bible clearly bestows upon our Lord Jesus Christ. If Jesus Christ is not God in the flesh, then His statements throughout the gospels are misleading, His work on the cross is subject to human failings, and His sovereign rule is not truly deserved. If embraced, the Arian denial of the deity of Christ leaves gaping holes not only in biblical theology, but also in the Gospel itself! We ll see next month that scripture is clear that Jesus is fully God. We should be broken hearted for our lost Jehovah s Witness friends. Denying that Jesus is God is not only denying scripture, it is rejecting salvation in the cross. David Can We Sing Too Much About the Cross? The following is a continuation of last week s Herald article written by Bob Kauflin, pastor & director of music at Sovereign Grace Church in Louisville, KY: 3. We can sing about the cross in ways that magnify us more than God. Worship sometimes turns in on itself. That happens when the cross is interpreted merely as a sacrificial example for us to follow, God showing us how valuable we are, or an expression of God s love devoid of any mention of wrath or judgment. Yes, God so loved the world that he gave his Son (John 3:16), but that love is the overflow of the love shared between the Father and Son. Jesus died so we might be delivered from God s wrath through his all-sufficient sacrifice (1 Thessalonians 1:10; Romans 3:25). While Jesus certainly had those he redeemed in his view and heart when he died (John 17:24), his ultimate passion was to glorify his Father (John 17:1 2). And he died for us that we might share that passion. 4. We can sing about the cross to check it off our gospel-centered list. Sadly, it s possible to sing well-written, theologically precise songs about Christ s substitutionary atonement and love our orthodox doctrine of the cross more than the Savior who hung on it. One of the greatest temptations for those familiar with the cross is to become increasingly unmoved by it. To think there must be something more amazing we can be giving our attention to. But as theologian David Prior said, We never move on from the cross, only to a more profound understanding of the cross. There is nothing more profound to consider than the Son of God giving his life as a ransom to redeem us. Labor to Be Affected The Puritans were known to say we should labor to be affected by the cross. It s hard work. But it s not because the cross is dull. It s because we are. I pray that singing about the cross and the Savior who gave his life there will never become boring, rote, or irrelevant for you and your church. Because the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the greatest news the world has ever heard, and our singing is but one more opportunity to passionately proclaim it. This concludes Bob Kauflin s article on Can We Sing Too Much About the Cross?. You can read the article in its entirety at Student Ministry Fundraiser On the first Sunday of each month the Student ministry will have breakfast available at 8:45 am by the Howard Taylor Building. Donations will go towards their summer mission trips. For His Glory, Peyton
