And that is just in the New Testament! You would think Christian folks would jump immediately into love as the best solution when problems arise. Unfortunately, however, our enemy is often successful in tricking us into first trying our own solutions. Thankfully, though, in the children of God, the truthfulness of loves power always prevails as the impotence of every other solution becomes evident. God is patient and good and He has left us with the command to love one another as He has loved us. Whatever we might learn together or do together, lets not lose sight of the preciousness of the sincere love God has given us for one another. 4 A message from David God Be Merciful Luke 18:10-14 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner! I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. (vv ) I read recently that Charles Spurgeon silently prayed the tax collector's prayer from Luke 18 every time he stepped into the pulpit. I ve found this prayer to be incredibly valuable in my own daily walk with Christ. I wanted to share three scenarios where the words, God, be merciful to me, a sinner! are exactly the words I need to express to recenter me on the gospel. 1. When you do well, because all that is good in you is Jesus. In Romans 12, Paul reminds us not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to. God has given us much grace. When we see pride welling up in our hearts, the words, God, be merciful to me, a sinner! remind us that we stand humble before God, dependant only on His grace. 2. When you are tempted, because all that is good is found is Jesus When we find ourselves craving sin, asking God for mercy recenters us as people dependant on God. If we fight sin in the flesh, we have failed at the start. If we fight sin through dependence on God s mercy, we are reminded of the great treasure we have in Jesus. 3. When you fail, because all is good has been accomplished for you by Jesus. The apostle John reminds us that if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (1Jn. 2:1) As Christians, we ask God for mercy as humble sinners, but we also ask with confidence. We know that Jesus gave His life that we might have mercy and stands as our advocate before the Father. When you fail, Jesus stands in heaven pleading your case, not based on the good on you, but based on the good He accomplished on your behalf. There is certainly nothing magical about the tax collector's prayer, but the gospel is the power of God. Borrow these words of scripture or use your own to remind yourself throughout the day of the great work that Jesus has done and is doing on your behalf. My House Shall be Called a House of Prayer for All Nations Chapter eleven of the gospel of Mark records one of the few times we see our Lord Jesus get really, really upset. Christ had just completed His triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem and makes His way to the temple. What our Lord found at the temple, however, greatly disturbed Him. And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. And he was teaching them and saying to them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? But you have made it a den of robbers. Mark 11:15-17 Many times when I read this passage I focus on what is happening and where this is happening, but neglect to think about the effect those buying and selling in the temple were having. The court of the Gentiles was the outer and largest area in the temple. This court was a place intended for Gentiles to come and seek after God. Because those buying and selling were taking up the whole outer court there was no where for the Gentiles to commune with God. Not only were the money-changers using the House of the Lord to make a buck, they were inhibiting others from seeking after Him. Bryan Chapell, editor of the Gospel Transformation Study Bible, comments on this passage, Jesus cleanses the temple because the temple is meant to display the fruit of true worship, not corrupt commerce and personal gain. The temple is meant to draw people from all nations to the purity of God. What about you and me? Is there anything we do that hinders our brother or sister from communing with God? As the apostle Paul wrote, May it never be! May all we do, both individually and collectively, encourage all and point all to worship our King Jesus! For His Glory, Peyton David
