This winter, I m somewhat disappointed with the lack of snow. With all the forecasts being for a long, snow-filled winter, I was looking forward to the positive aspects of Canadian winters. In my case, skiing. Yes, although the ski hills have plenty of snow mostly of the man-made kind, it s still tough to get motivated to ski when the white stuff isn t in your face. Of course you snowbirds must think I m mad, but hey, everything is a gift, we just need to appreciate it that way. ;) Fortunately, I arrived late to the last games night and didn t really get to play, until that additional game of Texas hold em was started - I think to show me, that I should stick with euchre. That evening, I had the opportunity to speak to one of our brothers who attends, but doesn t necessarily play. Our worthy Lecturer, Conor, told me some stories of his early adult life in Ireland. He detailed some pretty incredible near misses, with bombs exploding nearby, on more than one occasion. In particular, the story of the bomb that blew up at the bank, down the street from the pub that he worked and how returning back to work late, after a break, likely saved the life of his ungrateful boss, who was going to go to that bank on his return. Conor s reaction on his return to the pub Grab a drink on-the-house and call it a day. So whether you want to play cards or not, games night is a great break from the everyday, to hang with your brothers and learn more about each other. It s called games night Doesn t have to just be card games. Maybe we ll see a Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit board pop up one day? If you have some game ideas let PGK Andrew Eckstein and DGK/PGK Henry Thissen know. Be sure to join us February 21 st as a few of our brother Knights, from Mary Mother of God (MMOG) council, join us. I hear they are sending their best Admittedly, my family has been pretty busy and I m writing to you after, arguably, the most exciting Super Bowl has taken place. WOW, what a great game! Although I wasn t able to make it to the hall, I heard those that did had a great time watching the game on one of Oakville s largest screens. I also heard that our worthy Guard Tom, won on the Super Bowl bingo, with MY spot. LOL. Hats off to PGK Andrew and brother Frank D Aurora from MMOG council, for putting on the most well organized, combined, Basketball Free Throw Competition I ve been a part of. It was great to see both our Councils, as well as our Assembly, come together again, to deliver a program that the youth of Oakville are increasingly looking forward to. So much attention to details (too much to mention) was appreciated by all who participated. We didn t have any Toronto Raptors present, but having officials from all levels of government, school superintendent and high school basketball players present proving to the kids it s not that easy to sink a basket was, in of itself, very impressive. Looking forward, we have a great program upon us. Thursday February 16 th, brings the handoff from Burlington to Oakville, of the Knights of Columbus Ontario Special Olympics flag relay. District 67 Councils have been working hard over the last several weeks for the activities that will take place. Through the leadership of brother James Montague and his dad, worthy Guard Steve Montague, the events at the Haber Centre on Feb 16 th (details on Page 2) and leading up to the 9am, Feb 17 th Oakville flag raising ceremony at St. Ignatius of Loyola high school are sure to be a great success. Let s aim to build upon the success we had last year and be in attendance if you are able. All knights are encouraged to show their support by wearing one of our yellow Knighthood baldrics, unless of course you are one of our Patriotic Knights in regalia. All hands on deck The weekend of February 25/26 th will bring the busiest recruitment drive weekend that I ve been a part of. We have St. Andrew, St. James, St. Matthew and St. Michael parishes all confirmed to participate. In addition, on Saturday Feb 25 th from 9a-3p Ontario State Deputy Alain Cayer, will be in Marian Hall leading a District 67 Recruitment Training Workshop. All brother Knights, especially Officers, Membership Directors, Round Table Reps are encouraged to attend. Remember to RSVP with me, so we know how many sandwiches to order. Members of our State Deputy s team will also be helping out at the parishes over the 25/26 th weekend. St. Dominic s will kick off our recruitment drives one week earlier on February 18 th /19 th. Please assist as you are able both weekends and remember to have your form 100s with you and wear your Marian Council name badges proudly. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and the 40 days of preparation for the Easter season, when Christians are called to renew their commitments to spiritual practices like Fasting, Prayer, and Almsgiving. Once again I challenge you to go beyond giving up something This Lenten season, think of how you can make life better for others, show mercy and give of something more precious than money - give of your time, visit our sick, our lonely, our shut-ins, check in on our widows, take a friend with you to the hospital and participate in the spring 40 Days for Life spring campaign, which begins on Ash Wednesday (March 1 st ) and concludes Palm Sunday (7a-7p daily). We are called to give of ourselves, to make a difference for others. Not our will, but His Vivat Jesus! Giuseppe

2 February 2017 Marian Call Page 2 Council 3881 Food for Families AWARD Our council was awarded a plague in recognition of our activities in this program. The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in local communities by asking local councils to participate in the Orderwide Food for Families Program. Since 2012, the Knights of Columbus has donated over $8.5 million and 14.7 million pounds of food to local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens. Congratulations to all who donated their time and efforts to this program and all our programs. Pictured below: Chancellor Dennis Celej presenting the award to Grand Knight Giuseppe Peritore Knights of Columbus Flag Relay for Special Olympics On Feb 17th, the Special Olympics Flag will be coming to Oakville as part of the Knights of Columbus Flag Relay. The Flag Relay is a province-wide effort to show support for Special Olympics and the athletes within our communities. The Knights of Columbus will recognize our own Special Olympians by having a special flag-raising ceremony at St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School on Friday February 17th from 9:00am to 10:30am. Special guests are expected to make an appearance, including local and provincial dignitaries and the Oakville area Special Olympics athletes and coaches. The Knights of Columbus Honour Guard will lead the flag raising procession. Light refreshments will be served following the flag raising ceremony. We also invite members of Knights of Columbus and their families to attend a special night of fun at the Haber Center on Feb. 16th from 7pm-8:30pm where the Burlington Special Olympics athletes will demonstrate their skills. An official passing of the Flag from Burlington to Oakville will also happen at the Feb 16th event. All Knights of Columbus members and their families are invited to attend these ceremonies and show your support for Special Olympics in our community. Enjoy some Irish Stew, brown bread, green beer and a whole load of bolony!. Dance along with the O Connor/Cosgrove Give it a Go! school of dancing and afterwards enjoy the Goggin Dancers as they show how its really done. Drop in anytime between 2 and 7pm. We ll stay open longer if you wish! Come have a laugh, share a story and dye your hair green!.

3 February 2017 Marian Call Page 3 Recruitment Training Workshop February 25th On February 25th, between 9am & 3pm, Marian Council, will host a Knights of Columbus, Recruitment Training Workshop, led by our current Ontario State Deputy, Alain Cayer, who will be travelling from Casselman, Ontario (Ottawa area). All District 67 Officers, Membership Directors, Parish Round Table Reps and interested members, are invited to join the training in an effort to attract quality, new members and sustain the vibrancy of our councils. Please join us. We will only ask for a few hours of your time and of course $5 to cover the sandwich lunch that will be organized. Our State Deputy and members of his team will also assist with any membership drives at our parishes over the February 25th/26th weekend. St. Matthew's has confirmed participation. MARIAN LADIES Hello Ladies, According to the weather experts, we are passed the halfway mark of winter. At least part of January has been warmer than usual. Our next meeting will be on a Monday in May. Once I book the date with Henry I will let everyone know. It will probably the Monday after Mother s Day. We will be doing pot luck. If anyone has any ideas for entertainment, please let me know. Remember to enjoy your sweets on Valentine s Day, as Lent starts on March 1 st. As we celebrate the legacy of Venerable Michael McGivney and the contributions of our brother Knights since 1882, we also prepare for an even greater future as we live out the vision of our founder. The anniversary of the realization of Father McGivney s dream is a cause for celebration. Councils throughout the Order observe this day among their own members and with the community at large as a reminder of what the Knights of Columbus has accomplished in the past years, the ideals of the Order, and their own local achievements

6 February 2017 Marian Call Page 6 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FREE THROW COMPETION January 25th at St. Thomas Aquinas Another very successful event this year which was well attended by the school kids and parents who, judging from the atmosphere in the gym, thoroughly enjoyed the event. Local politicians and councillors even got in on the event, making some free throws themselves (7% success!!!). The kids really did show them how it was done! Thank you to PGK Andrew Eckstein for his fine organisation together with our brothers at Mary Mother of God. All knight volunteers had fun with the kids who s energy was contagious.
