1 March 2015 Grand Knight s Message Robert Castonguay G.K. "I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life." Deuteronomy 30:19 On the second day of Lent, the Lord tells us that Lent is a matter of life or death. Because of what we let the Lord do in us last Lent, some babies, poor people, and elderly people are alive today who would have been killed in our culture of death. Conversely, it is possible that because of our resistance to God's grace last Lent, some attacks on life which could have been stopped are continuing to plague us. Moreover, Lent is a matter of everlasting life or death. The Lord is working through us this Lent in a special way so that all people will be saved. By loving the Lord, "walking in His ways, and keeping His commandments, we will be used by the Lord this Lent to lead many into God's kingdom. However, if we refuse to deny ourselves and take up Jesus' cross each day, we may defeat God's plan for ourselves and others. Therefore, have the Lent of a lifetime. May this Lent deepen greatly your love for the Father of life. This Lent, choose life. Happy March, I am sure like myself you are looking forward to spring, warm weather, melted snow, and more sunshine. Another few weeks and Easter will be upon us, with the Glorious celebration of our Risen Lord. I encourage you Brothers to join in the Stations of the Cross and Rosary Friday nights at our beautiful Mary Mother of God Church, with your family. Friday March 20 th our Council will be leading the prayers. The following weekend our CWL will lead with Mary Mother of God Way of the Cross. Spend an hour with us, in prayer and reflection. I want to congratulate the Dance Committee for another wonderful evening Saturday March 7 th. A good time was had by all who attended. Attendance was down a little from last year s event, and as a result funds raised are also projected to be less. The Dance Committee believes it is due to a lack of fresh and different ideas. They want and need new ideas, from Brothers willing to assist them in planning and execution of next year s event. The one thing in common from everyone who participated in this years and previous year s committee is that it was fun and rewarding. Soon there will be a review meeting and you may be asked to participate both in the review of this year s Dinner and Dance and the planning of next year. Please Just Say Yes.

2 KNIGHT NEWS, Council May 2014 Page 2 On the topic of new, our Recruitment weekend is March 21 st and 22 nd after each Mass in preparation for our next First Degree Tuesday April 28 th at the General Meeting. Start now by talking to anyone and everyone, who you believe would and should become a member of the Knights of Columbus. Only by growing our Council Membership can we hope to do more for those in need, our community and our church. It is simply a matter of opening the conversation regarding the Knights and encouraging them to speak to Brother David Hinca after the mass, or at any time they are available. If you have a referral, you can simply Brother David dehinca@gmail.com and the prospect with their contact information and Brother David will follow up with a phone call. Our next General Meeting is Tuesday March 24 th at 7:30 please make every effort to attend and participate. If you need transportation to the meeting, merobcastonguay@hotmail.com and we will arrange a ride with a Brother Knight. If you know of a Brother Knight who has not attended in while, give them a call, and offer to ride together in Fraternity. God Bless you, Rob Castonguay Grand Knight Vivat Jesus Three words are resonating in my head right now: anticipate, communicate and participate. Antici pate the return on your personal investment for each and every moment you spend and outpour a part of your life in works of charity. Participate and be actively in unity with your fellow Knights as we consider, service and strengthen those in need within our Parish community. Communicate and be in fraternity as we strive to put together and facilitate programs which emanate from our compassion, care and concern, and which actively embody the principles and programs advocated and advanced by our Council. These three words are what define my experience as your Deputy Grand Knight. So, here is the Deputy Grand Knight s Worthiness Checklist or How to be a good Knight : 1. Read our Knight News newsletter and please respond when prompted. Please recognize the time, effort and commitment of the Knights who have posted articles. They need your response. 2. Volunteer, if you have the time. We are all busy people yet giving of our time is, by virtue, charity and is often more important than our financial contributions! 3. Support our Council programs. Share them, believe in them, live them, and contribute to them. 4. Talk to people about being a Knight. Start a dialogue with others (don t selfishly keep it to yourself) and let people know what we do. Worthy Knights I have been a Knight of Columbus since January of Over the past 7 years I have been on a journey of discovery regarding what it means to be a Knight and have picked up a few of the ways in which the Order enriches and enhances the lives of the people within our community. There is not a soul who has attended Mary Mother of God Parish who has not benefitted from the work of our Council and no one who actively participates ever expresses regret regarding their personal investment. 5. Show respect for those in office. Once elected, recognize that each man has been deemed worthy of his office by his Council brothers and esteem him with his worthy title. 6. Participate in meetings. We use the simplified version of Robert s Rules of Order, but all can actively share in our discussions and add their knowledge, expertise and insight to meetings.

3 KNIGHT NEWS, Council March 2015 Page 3 7. Contribute resources including: your time, your financial support and/or your expertise. 8. If you are able, step up and be part of the Executive. Offer your skills, knowledge, and talent. 9. Live your Catholicism. Try to be visible within our Mary Mother of God Parish Community. 10. Take initiative and share your spiritual passions, your program ideas and your Christian advocacy. Columbian Squires Circle with David Fisher (Please help us as either a Counsellor or a prayer partner) My brother Knights, did you read this article? Does any of this resonate with you? If, so, please reach out and let me know. Or better yet, attend our next General meeting at the end of March 24 th and speak to a few of the other 94 current members of our Council. Vivat Jesus David Fisher Deputy Grand Knight Mary Mother of God Council Upcoming and ongoing programs where we will need the help of our Knights: K of C Charity Raffle (January-May) with Jim Eichenberg (Please help us sell $5 raffle tickets) Good Friday OCYO Walk (April 3) with Milt Cowan (Please help us prepare lunch at St. James or join us on the walk from St. Andrew s Church to St. James Church to St. Dominic s Church) with Bingo Rivera (Please help us on Mondays for or Fridays for or for our upcoming special events.) For more information please to: Jonathan Banzuela at jajbanz@gmail.com James Mendez at jmzcons@gmail.com Building together a spiritual community through the Knights of Columbus, the St. James Parish Youth Group, family and friends and especially you. STOPS TO BE MADE: St. Andrew Catholic Church, Lakeside Park (1), St. Jude Anglican Church (2), Tannery Park (3), Oakville Funeral Home (4), St, Jude Cemetary (5), Central Baptist Church (6), St. James Parish (7) LUNCH, St. Pauls United Church (8), Rebecca St SE Side (9), Thomas A Blakelock High School (10), St Hilda Anglican Church (11), Evangel Pentacost Church (12), North Side Trail Park (13), St Dominic Parish (14) All the good works we do are informed by our four core principles: Charity - Our Catholic faith teaches us to Love thy neighbor as thyself. Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. Unity None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that together we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together we support one another. That doesn t mean that we always agree or that there is never a difference of opinion. It does mean that as a Knight of Columbus you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community. Fraternity The Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died often prematurely. The Order s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do individual Knights, who last year gave more than 10 million hours of their time to assist sick and/or disabled members and their families. In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and take care of one another. Patriotism Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether it s in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens.
