2 PRESIDENT S PAGE This will be the last regular Bulletin of the year, although I hear that there may be a bonus Bulletin in December. Since our Bromeliad year ends in early December with our Holiday Dinner Meeting, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have contributed so generously of your time, energy and often your cash in making our year so successful. After the highs of a memorable World Bromeliad Conference in 2016, I thought it might be difficult to keep everyone involved and looking forward to our meetings and events. Thanks to the work of our Nominating Committee last fall they gave me a great group of Officers and Directors who have done all the work, leaving me to run the meetings with all the details taken care of ahead of time. Our Committee Chairs and members have done an outstanding job in handling all the tasks necessary for successful meetings. They have done such an excellent job that it appears effortless and we sometimes forget to thank them for the wonderful job they have done. Let me start by thanking the Committee Chairs and Members who have done so much for us all: Cherie Lee and her Program Committee rounded up a stellar slate of speakers and took care of all the details of getting them to meetings and taking care of their needs; Allyn Pearlman has kept our finances in order for I don t know how long; Charlien Rose and David Whipkey worked very hard to keep me in line and focused on the next necessary thing. Thanks also to Ruby Adams for stepping into the Secretary s post on a temporary basis when Charlien had to step away from those duties. Since Bromeliad groups never seem to be able to do anything without lots of good food, we need to give Verna Powers, Daryl Page, Gordan and Shirl Stowe our heartfelt thanks for organizing the goodies we enjoyed. John Schmidt, Rick Richtmyer and Wray Page have made Show and Tell especially enjoyable and enlightening. John not only brings his knowledge of the plants presented for show, but regularly brings in his own beautiful plants- which I venture to say few of us have ever grown as well. Noreen Tolman and Kenneth Gardner give up a lot of their socializing time to register the members and visitors for our meetings. These records are shared with the City of Houston to help evaluate the needs of the various groups competing for use of City facilities. The raffle table is probably my favorite part of the meetings. Thanks to Frank and Cherie Lee for taking care of this activity. And we cannot end our thanks without a standing ovation for Mary Cinotto for volunteering to take on the editing of our BS/HI Bulletin. She has done a marvelous job and I have enjoyed what she has been able to produce. November s Speakers: John Edmonson and Mary Cinotto from BS/HI John Edmonson and his wife Mary have both loved plants since they were kids. John has built 5 greenhouses the first while in high school. He raised orchids, had terrariums and numerous staghorn ferns. When they met, he had built a small greenhouse at his apartment that housed numerous plants (including some bromeliads!!). John got his second degree in photography and owned his own business for 20 years. He was also a member of the Professional Photographers Association winning numerous awards for his photographic works. He worked for the Houston Ballet and has many outstanding photos of the various artists there. Today, he enjoys photography in conjunction with his plants and helps Mary photograph her work as well. Mary loved art from when she was a kid (along with plants, snakes, dogs, cats, all things outdoors). As an adult, she was able to attend the Museum of Fine Arts Houston s Glassell School for 7 years and the Art League of Houston for 5 years. Glassell introduced pastels during one of her drawing courses. The course featured many drawing mediums such as colored pencil, pen and ink, oil pastels, various graphite tools, charcoal and soft pastels. Mary did both watercolor and pastel work for a number of years and sold her work to various clients with themes from boats, to landscapes to animal portraits. When she started at Compaq, she ceased art and has just recently come back to pastels because of her fascination with bromeliads and bromeliad art. 2

3 NOVEMBER BIRTHDAYS BRIEF RECAP OF 38TH ANNUAL SOUTHWEST BROMELIAD GUILD SHOW 15TH INTERNATIONAL CRYPTANTHUS SOCIETY SHOW As mentioned in the Editor s note on page 2, there will be photos from the shows for the Holiday edition of the newsletter. Yes, we generally don t do a December newsletter but 2017 has been one weird year. And that leads to the show in Dallas - turnout wasn t the usual due in large part to Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. Harvey impacted members in Houston and Irma cut into much of Florida. Many folks who generally attend were not able to this year and they were deeply missed. The joy of a conference is being able to spend some time with our fellow bromeliad aficionados, share war stories and learn about new tricks and techniques. Meetings don t generally allow much chat time and we don t get to see other club folks except at these events. Hopefully, 2018 will be more gracious and we will be able to have more good times together. Shirl Stowe 11/01 Betty Zugheri 11/04 Carole Richtmyer 11/05 Faye Martin 11/11 Sidney Newton 11/14 Ray Johnson 11/16 Cindy Gray Strickland 11/25 However, there were folks from many parts of Texas, Michigan (I got to meet Penrith Goff a most marvelous bromeliad artist) San Diego, Louisiana, Florida to enjoy the festivities and fun. The auction was lively and successful. Charlie Birdsong was the auctioneer. Vickey Gurka and Barbara Szymczak were the Vanna Whites who went from table to table with the items. Food was marvelous at the dinner as well. Net of $ that is split among the participating groups. There were 103 plants entered for both shows. It was a pretty show in spite of the scarcity of entries. Also, the weather was perfect. And a million thanks for everyone who worked together to make another good time for all. 4 Recap of October s Meeting with Dennis Cathcart, Owner and Operator, Tropiflora Bromeliads from the Wilderness to Greenhouse to Your House BS/HI was fortunate to have Dennis Cathcart present at the October meeting because...while Houston had Harvey, Florida had Irma. Hurricane Irma did damage to Tropiflora and it seemed touch and go as to whether Dennis would be able to come to Texas for both the BS/HI October meeting and the Southwest Bromeliad Guild Show. Luckily, Dennis came with wonderful plants and a captivating presentation on his many Indiana Jones-like adventures. Over the years, Dennis and his teams traveled into beautiful yet rugged areas of the world to find, retrieve and transport the wonderful bromeliads we all enjoy today. His stories and pictures are enthralling to many of us who can t imagine the treks they made to these vast wild regions. Many thanks again to Dennis and the folks at Tropiflora. 7 Volunteers needed to help Gary Gallick and Jan Liang move plants for upcoming winter November 18-10:00 AM 3202 Riverlawn, Kingwood, Tx Hi Friends, We are assisting Gary Gallick and Jan Liang to assemble a work party to move Gary's wonderful terrestrial collection from his front yard into winter quarters in their garage again this year. We plan to meet at Gary and Jan's home in Kingwood at 10:00 AM Saturday November 18th. With a good spirited crew this should not take over two hours. Jan asked that everyone who can help bring a good pair of work gloves, a wagon or dolly if you have one, cold water or soft drink, and a folding chair to use at break time. You might want to bring a camera to take some pictures of some of Gary's rare and unusual plants. As we all know, Gary is fond of green, spiny, rare and beautiful plants. Please call or Rick or Carole Richtmyer at this number ( or at planobrom@aol.com) if you will assist.. Even if you previously told us you would help, please refresh our memories and or call us again. With many thanks in advance from Gary and Jan. Their address in Kingwood is 3202 Riverlawn, Kingwood, Tx Rick and Carole Richtmyer Editor s Note: This newsletter contains photos and information from Dennis Cathcart s visit. Another holiday newsletter will be coming in early December with both the details and photos from the Southwest Bromeliad Guild Show. This edition has the results (pages 5 and 6) but no photos yet. Cheers! The Plantastics (Journey Through a Greenhouse) 7

8 WHIPKEY S WORD Sport Shades of the X-Men! Logan, also known as Wolverine, once said Mutants abound around us. I agree with him. No, I don t mean people with super powers. I mean mutations that occur in the plant world. The word this month is sport. The English Oxford Living Dictionaries gives the following definition: sport: an animal or plant showing abnormal or striking variation from the parent type, especially in form or color, as a result of spontaneous mutation. A Bromeliad Glossary published by the Bromeliad Society, Inc. gives the following definition: sport: A sudden spontaneous deviation from a typical form; a mutation. Sports are mistakes. When DNA is replicating, sometimes something goes wrong. Some of the chromosomes or genes change in unexpected ways. Sometimes changes are so profound that the plant is no longer viable and it dies. Some of our most popular Bromeliads are sports. Aechmea orlandiana Ensign is a sport that showed up in a batch of Aechmea orlandiana seedlings. Aechmea orlandiana Reverse Ensign is itself a sport of Ensign. The variegated Billbergia Beth Whitley is a sport of Billbergia nutans that was discovered by our own Sam Chism. One last thought on sports. They can be unstable. The explanation for the instability is rather complex. If you are interested, you should read The Many Mutations of Ae. orlandiana `Ensign' by Joseph F. Carrone Jr. in The Journal of the Bromeliad Society Vol. 30(2): For those of you who only have a passing interest suffice it to say if a pup on a variegated plant arises from a green area, it will not be variegated. If it arises from a variegated area it will be variegated. Allyn NOVEMBER is here and so it is time to think about our Bromeliad Holiday Meeting. There is a new restaurant this year LOS TIOS.
