2 President s Page I suppose you are wondering, Why the sunglasses? Well, aside from the obvious (pineapples are bromeliads), I had saved them for the May show, sale, and party to get in the mood, so to say. What a success the Show and Sale were this year despite the cold, hurtful weather. A big thank you goes out to each of you who played a part in the Show & Sale weekend. We are so fortunate to have such talented, dedicated, and energetic members. It does take a village! Although our show was a little smaller than usual in overall plants entered, we had some beauties. We also saw more entries in the Artistic category. I m sure some of these changes in the show were a result of the extremely cold weather and resultant damage to many of our plants. Anyway, the judges had their work cut out for them in deciding which plants would go to the head table. You ll enjoy seeing some of the winning plants that Editor Carole has included in this bulletin. After the show on Saturday, we proceeded to Pearland to the after show party and auction at Joan and Richard Beaubouef s. If you remember, on Saturday, it had rained some and everyone was worried about our dinner and auction outside. By the time we arrived at the Beaubouef s, the tables had been set up inside so no worry about rain. We had a wonderful dinner and the rain cooperated for the auction which we did have outside on the deck. Another big thank you to Doug Trahan and all who cooked, decorated, and served the food for our party. Read more about the auction later. For June 19, we are looking forward to our ABC s of Bromeliads at the Woolsey s in Santa Fe, TX. Note the earlier time (9:30 a.m.) so that we can avoid some of the heat. I especially want to welcome the Austin and Beaumont Bromeliad Societies who will be joining us for a fun time. I hope everyone will try to join us for a tour of the shade houses, a program by David Whipkey, and a potluck lunch. Collection for Mike Burnett Mike is at the VA Hospital undergoing his chemotherapy treatments. He is doing better each day according to Steve (Mike s brother). Mike expressed his thanks to all of his friends in BSH who have been so good to him. Many of you have asked about sending flowers or doing something for Mike. To show our appreciation for all of Mike s volunteer time in building our website and adding to it each month, we ve decided to take up a collection at the ABC s on June 19. I will deliver our donations to him which he can use as needed. You can only use so many flowers in a small hospital room. If you can t make the ABC s, just call or me about your donation and we will work something out. 713/ or g_l_stowe@comcast.net May Auction We had almost 70 donations for our auction. We want to thank the following for their gracious donations: Caldwell Nursery in Rosenberg, David Shiigi, Tom Wolfe, Tropiflora Nursery, David Meade, Charlien Rose, Doug Trahan, Carole & Rick Richtmyer, Dohn Brotherton, Odean Head, Chris Nguyen, Jim Woolsey, Mary Ellen & Fred Rinebold, Cynthia & Ray Johnson, and Lindsey Stowe. What would an auction be without its auctioneer and loyal sidekick (Gary Gallick and Rick Richtmyer) and all the people who bid. Gordon Stowe continues to improve his auction Excel process. We liked being able to find out our totals so quickly. All in all, everyone had a fun time! Lindsey 2

Those of us who have been doing shows for more years than we like to admit to really appreciate your participation. 5 R The ABCs emember our June meeting moves away from its usual location in the Houston Garden Center, due to traditionally crowded conditions in Hermann Park during our normal meeting week. This year we will meet at Joanne and Jimmy Woolsey s nursery in Santa Fe. The date is Saturday, June 19, and the hours are 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. (or really "until whenever"). The June meeting traditionally combines good food and lots of opportunity for information swap, conversation and bragging rights ( My bromeliad is bigger than your bromeliad ) plus a learning opportunity by participating in the ABCs. The ABCs are reviews of selected aspects of the bromeliad hobby. This year David Whipkey will share his experience in growing bromeliads for the benefit of new and experienced growers alike. Be sure to take advantage of this great bromeliad experience! th Street, Santa Fe, TX Meet our June Speaker: David Whipkey David joined the BS/H in 1985 and has been an active member for the last 25 years. He has a great deal of growing experience, winning Best in Show at the 2009 BS/H show. He s served on many committees and the BS/H board of directors as well as president and vice-president. He enjoys growing all types of bromeliads, but especially Cryptanthus (he is currently vice president and has served as a past president of the Cryptanthus Society). He is an accredited BSI judge. 5
