1 JEKYLL ISLAND ARTS ASSOCIATION Goodyear Cottage, Historic District Jekyll Island, Georgia December 2017 Newsletter MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Bonnie Householder It s been a wonderful year for Jekyll Island Arts Association, and the upcoming December 12 Annual Meeting (preceding the Jekyll Singers concert) will include election of new Directors for a three year term. Hope you will plan to be there and vote on these new directors. Of course, this also means that two of our directors are leaving the Board.heartfelt thanks to Sonja Peterson and JoAnn Buisson. JoAnn has been the summer exhibits coordinator and has agreed to continue that job as she takes on other volunteer responsibilities with other Jekyll Island groups. Sonja has been our Classes Coordinator for two years and will coordinate the fall 2018 and winter 2019 classes, but really is looking for a co-coordinator. If you are willing and interested in learning more about helping with our classes offerings, please let us know. You can your interest to the board at jiaaboard@gmail.com and we will be happy to talk to you about what is involved. The Board of Directors members who will be part of the Board with terms expiring 2020 include three who have agreed to continue and two new Board members. Those continuing for another term include Dilys Jagger, Deb Patterson, and Bonnie Householder, and the new members will be Sarah Tallu Schuyler and Rob Jagger. Thank you for your willingness to serve. Hope you have visited the Merry Artists Sale the opening day was absolutely wonderful and we are indebted to all the artists who entered items in the Sale! As of this writing, we have only one day under our belts, but the sale of more than 100 items on the first day bodes well for the Sale. Come to Goodyear to do your Christmas shopping at this fun event, which promises to be one of the highlights of the year. Thanks to our co-chairs of this event, Dilys Jagger and Caryl Rice, and their entire team and all the volunteers! By the way, it s also time to think about volunteering to take a leadership role in this event next year, too! Talk to either Dilys or Caryl or drop us a line at the gmail address above we d love to chat with you! Thanks to every one of you for making 2017 such a wonderful year time and space do not allow me to identify everyone who contributed to our success this year! As we move into our 51 st year, we are looking forward to our future, and that future includes you. 2 Page 2 JIAA Newsletter December 2017 into January/February 2018 JIAA CLASSES The Winter classes schedule will start in January but there are still a few places available in December 2017 classes - one place in Addison Palmer s excellent Fundamentals of Drawing class, and two places in Fused Glass Jewelry on December 20. For Winter - January/February Classes, we offer Advanced Pine Needle Basketry from Linda Lanter, and Cathy Miller s Basketmaking Step Two. Zentangle returns, and Sara Rupnik s Memoir Writing; and a favorite Linocut Print Making by Ed Einboden (I m taking this one for sure!); New and exciting are Digital Field Photography by Brad Hoyt (field photography is back!) and Watercolor Without Boundaries from the renowned Catherine Harris; our favorite Nancy Pitcher returns with her watercolor classes and watercolor on batik classes; new and already filling up is Observational Drawing by Ted Kennedy, art prof; and Addison Palmer s Full Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting puts it all together for you. Games brainy (Mahjong) and sports physical (Fly Casting) are represented as is the spiritual with Meditation and Mindfulness from Nita Malbasa; A lot more jewelry making classes of all kinds, and fiber and fabric arts (Pom Pom Bathroom Mat is new, and the Victorian Knitted Beaded Bag and Rag Rug Weaving return) with knitting and Quilt As You Go bags - and mosaics - Cindy returns with The Mosaic Birdbath, and other classes. Discussion classes this Winter season include The Great Religious Paintings of the Western World and Favorite Poems of Yesteryear, and Bonnie Householder s very popular The Millionaires of Jekyll Island; There are still places in Beginners Sculpting and Intermediate Sculpting with Instructor Seeley Booth. 4 Page 4 JIAA Newsletter Facilities Management Report Craig Patterson SBA/FEMA Status Report Hurricane Matthew: we are still waiting to hear about our SBA Loan request for Hurricane Matthew damage. This is required before we can proceed through the FEMA Grant Process. Hurricane Irma: both the SBA Loan request and the FEMA Grant paperwork for Irma are in process and we will be having an Exploratory Call from FEMA very shortly, to discuss the steps required relative to the grant request. Membership News Joan Samuelson Total JIAA Membership as of this writing is: 512. Over 55% of combined new memberships/renewals were done on-line.
