4011Knights.org THE 4011 NEWS Vol. 26 No. 4 Father O Neill Council Mar/Apr 2018 A WORD FROM OUR GRAND KNIGHT Worthy Brothers, I must first apologize on this late newsletter. With Ash Wednesday AND Valentine s Day falling on the same date, I have been a bit delayed in getting to write this. From my research, this concurrence hasn t happened since 1945! I must also relate the sad news of the passing of Ed Oster. Ed was one of our charter members, and a regular fixture at our annual crab feasts. Due to health reasons, he was unable to attend last years, but had requested I send over some crabs, which I did. We also, more recently, lost Past State Deputy Bill Kuchmas, III. I would ask everyone to keep these two brothers, and their families, in your prayers. In happier news, the council is well on its way to attaining the Columbian Award, an award given by Supreme for meeting certain activity goals, and part of the Star Council Award. Two activities, the Honor s Banquet on May 19 th, and the Renewal of Vows on June 17 th will round out our activities list for this year. But, there is still plenty of places to volunteer. The Franciscan Center, Pregnancy Center North, the local parishes, and our Council all need your help. If you have an urge to help build our Council, please make yourself known to the Election Committee over the next few weeks. They are currently making a list of those members who wish to participate in the leadership of this council. Names must be in by April 4 th, and elections will be held May 2 nd. It s just one last push until the end of the year, folks, let s make it good by engaging the community, and growing our membership. Next Formation Degree is May 30th Vivat Jesus, Karl Tschanz Grand Knight Council #4011 Our Officers: Grand Knight: Karl Tschanz Chaplain: Fr. Francis Ouma Deputy Grand Knight: Ramon Esquilin Chancellor: Joseph Derr Recorder: Joseph Norton Financial Secretary: Christopher Schaum Treasurer: Richard Briggs Lecturer: John McFadden Advocate: Gen.(Ret.) William Bilo Warden: Martin Corky Finnerty Insides Guard: Edward Countess Outside Guard: John Meredith Board of Trustees: 1. Carl Lenhoff 2. Greg Burke 3. Rafael Nicolas Meetings held the first and third Wednesday of every month, at 8pm. Hall Rentals: Andrew Hilbinger Mission Statement: Living our Faith The Father O Neill Council of the Knights of Columbus is a fraternal organization of Catholic men dedicated to the church. We will expend our energies toward preserving the sanctity of life and making a difference in the community via service and charity. In pursuit of these objectives we promote family, develop friendships, enjoy fraternalism and grow in faith.
Chaplain s Message Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.) Chaplain: Fr. Francis Ouma Pre-Meeting Rosary When you say the Our Father, God s ear is next to your lips St. Andre Bessette Brothers, please join us monthly at our Pre-Business meeting rosary. From 7:30pm to 8:00pm we pray the rosary monthly for those who are sick, in need, and for God s guidance in all things. As Knights, we all took a pledge to pray it as often as we can. And its important as Catholic Gentlemen to uphold our pledges.
A Message from our Worth District Deputy Brothers, On March 25th, the 136th Anniversary of the Founding of the Knights of Columbus will be celebrated. In honor of the birth of our beloved Order, try to wear your membership badge to Mass that weekend and ask a catholic gentleman sitting near you in church to join your Council. We need membership to continue our fraternal works and to replace those who have gone before us to our Heavenly Father. Replace yourself. At all of my assigned councils, I have friends that I have met over the years that need our prayers, either from the effects of time, or just an ongoing medical issue. Please pause daily for a quick prayer for our sick members. Remember, someday, a new brother knight may be the one praying for you to get well. I look forward to seeing you all soon. Vivat Jesus Jim Klein Sr. District Deputy #19 Volunteer Opportunities As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God s varied graces: 1 Peter 4:10 One of the purposes of the Knights of Columbus is to assist people directly and indirectly. This is done through volunteerism. We NEED your help with the following, so please offer to perform one or more of the following tasks in the coming months, or answer positively if called upon. Our success depends on you. March Church Drive As part of our council s effort to grow membership, Chancellor Joe Derr will be organzing the involvement of our members and their outreach at their local parish. If you know of a fellow parish member who is interested in the Knights, or even someone whom you think would make a good knight, please let Joe Derr known. There are numerous benefits to bringing someone into the Knights. April 28th Franciscan Center Visit Help unload and distribute food to needy families in Baltimore City. We routinely do a Franciscan Center trip every other month, on the last Saturday. We meet at the Hall at 7am for carpool purposes. You can also meet us down at the Center if you wish. For more information Contact Brother Bill Bilo or John Meredith
Congratulations to the Fire Fighter, Citizen, and Teachers of the Year! On behalf of the Father O Neill Council, #4011, I would like to thank the winners of this year s Firefighter, Citizen and Teacher of the Year awards. These members of our community, who have stood out among peers, were awards a certificate and a monetary award from our council. Their names have also been submitted to the State Council to be considered in the state-wide competition. Firefighter of the Year: Ryan Miller This year alone Ryan Miller has responded on 80 calls thus far and has been available in the station on standby for 39 more. On many of these responses, he has been the acting officer in charge a role he was born for. As the Captain, when dispatched on a fire or a rescue, there are very few members I d rather have on my crew. When I am unable to personally crew the engine or squad, Ryan is one of the members I most trust to lead the crew as officer. His expertise, knowledge, skills, and leadership on the fire ground have had a substantial positive effect on our company s ability to serve our community. M. J. Goodwin, Captain, Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company Citizen of the Year: Larry Ventura There is nothing Larry won t do. From heavy lifting to giving someone a ride to changing a batter. He is friendly and a real team player. He looks out for others and looks for ways to improve the center. In addition to volunteering at Bykota, Larry helps with United Churches Assistance Network, St. Joseph s Cockeysville and St. Elizabeth s Senior Apartments. Bykota would not be the same without all of his contributions. Julie Lynn, Director, Be Ye Kind One To Another (Bykota) Teacher of the Year St. Joseph s School: Anne Kihn Our honoree not only loves being a teacher but takes great pride in it as well. Like most teachers, her day extends beyond the classroom into nights and weekends, yet she does it without complaint, all while balancing her other roles as wife and mother. Taking care of her students during the day and at night tending to the countless needs of her own children with the demands of schedules, sports and homework, with what looks like ease. She finds time in her schedule to volunteer. She volunteers with local recreation programs by organizing and selling spirit wear to raise funds. She helps run the Service Club for the students of St. Joseph school, organizing weekly times to make sandwiches for Our Daily Bread. She will plan trips to visit elder care facilities, like Arden Courts, with the students. Not only does this help them gain valuable life lessons, but it is tremendously rewarding for the patients of these facilities. All of this is done with a deep rooted Catholic faith and a willing heart. Mrs. Maggie Dates, Principal, St. Joseph s School Again, thank you all for what you have done for our faith, families and community.
Shroud of Turin Talk January 17 th Lecture By: Karl Tschanz Lutherville, January 17 th This past week, Brother Bill Wingard, in conjunction with his group Shroud Talks ( held a lecture at the Father O Neill Club of Towson on January 17 th. The lecture, open to the public, covered the holy mystery of the Shroud of Turin. Bill Wingard has studied the Shroud for the last 20 years and has been giving talks on the shroud nationwide since The history of the Shroud of Turin is commonly separated into two time periods. Pre-1390 and 1390 to Present. Bill s talk covered the entire history, tracing its path from Jerusalem to Antioch and Constantinople, then to France and finally, it s current resting place, in Turin, Italy. The Shroud of Turin is most noted for having the ghostly image of Jesus Christ, in negative, left on the otherwise beige cloth. In the 1978 a team of international scientists journeyed to Turin to unlock its mysteries. As Bill Wingard put it, many of them hoped to prove it was false, and enjoy the rest of their time in Italy. What occurred, however, was five days of intense research that resulted in more questions than answers. These questions are still being answered by scientists today, as more and more research is being conducted on the shroud. Bill s talk then talks about the passion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is probably the most moving part, as Bill goes into mechanical and exacting detail on just what Jesus of Nazareth would have had to endure on his journey to the cross. And what pains he would face on the cross as well. The hour and half talk is one of a moving tribute to one of the most miraculous images we have been shown. If you have already seen the talk, then you know how powerful it can be. For those who have yet to hear Bill talk, he can be reached through his website.
