O'NEILL COUNCIL MISSION STATEMENT Living Our Faith THE FATHER O NEILL COUNCIL OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS IS A FRATERNAL ORGANIZATION OF CATHOLIC MEN DEDICATED TO THE CHURCH. WE WILL EXPEND OUR ENERGIES TOWARD PRESERVING THE SANCTITY OF LIFE AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY VIA SERVICE AND CHARITY. IN PURSUIT OF THESE OBJECTIVES WE PROMOTE FAMILY., DEVELOP FRIENDSHIPS, ENJOY FRATERNALISM AND GROW IN FAITH. M Grand Knight's Corner y Brother Knights, thank you for re electing me for a second term as Grand Knight. I look forward to serving the council for one more year. I hope that I will have learned from the lessons of the past year, and steer our council towards star status. To do that, we re missing one thing, new members. We cannot be a star council without attracting about twenty new members and retaining the members that we have. Membership also is the critical life blood of the council. As this past year has proven with the death of many knights and family members, we won t live forever. To ensure our legacy and to imprint our mark on future generations, we must build this council through new membership. I am asking everyone in the council to recruit at least one new member this year. We are an extremely active council and have much to be proud of to include our bicycle for the poor program, our JMJ 5K, our teachers of the year and firemen of the year programs, our breakfast with Santa and Easter Egg hunt, just to name a few of our charitable activities. Then we have our numerous, fraternal activities, such as our Independence Day picnic, concert and fireworks crab August 2013 and shrimp feasts, our regular social meetings, our awesome speaker program, and our dart nights. We should proudly share the good news about our activities with prospective members. The awesome support that we provide to each other continually impresses me. If a brother knight or family member dies, we are there for them. If a brother is in need of help, we hear his call. If you don t believe this, you must not have had an occasion to ask for your brother s support. Just today, I had an air conditioning emergency at my house, and a brother referred me to someone who came out immediately and filled the coolant in my A/C units and at half the price that another company was going to charge. My brother knights, let s not keep our treasured council a secret, but let s spread the news. Charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism, with your Catholic brothers, what can be better than that? Thank You!

It was a low key event since all but three officers returned from last year. 5 I Deacon's Reflection By Deacon Kevin Reid t seems like it has been close to 100 degrees almost every day of this past week, temperatures have been high and people seem to be quicker then ever to fly off the handle. Our country is clearly divided and our politicians can seem to agree on anything other then to agree to disagree. Prices of everything that we need for our day to day life just seem to be getting higher and higher. Some might say that this is a problem that is unique to our American Freedom and our elective process. But you know 2,000 years ago things were going pretty much the same for the Super Power of that time the Roman Empire. Their system of government was in deadlock, the "Republic" was ending and the Empire was gaining momentum. The difference between the Romans of that time and we Americans is that we have our faith. We have been given the gift of eternal life, by a man who walked in Caesar's time. Jesus became one of us, he was persecuted for his actions and for standing up to the status quo. He knew that the people's hearts had once again become hardened. His prophets had been put to death or ignored. His people were like sheep with out a Shepherd. As Catholics today, we are baptized to be Priest, Prophet, and King. And as Knights we take additional vows to remain true to our Catholic values and teachings, to practice tolerance and to be Charitable to all who might need our help. perhaps it might provide each of us an opportunity to pray for the Grace to serve with all of our hearts and our minds. Let us also pray that our great nation under God will continue to be blessed by God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Our faith unites us and our work as Knights helps to define us for who we are. One day each of us will stand where all those who have gone before us has stood. We will stand before Jesus of Nazzareth and his questions to Deacon Kevin F. Reid each of us should be very similar. July 17th 2013 He is not going to judge us by what we became, he will judge us by how we loved him, how we honored him and tried to give Glory to his name. So as you reflect on this past year,

8 The 4011 News Pag e 8 D ear Fellow Knights: This is the 5th article on the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council s Catholic Information Service series on New Evangelization. It is entitled The Beauty of Holiness: Sacred Art and the New Evangelization. It and the previous issues are available to Fr. O Neill Council members as a free gift from me. I hope that these booklets help you grow in understanding your One, Catholic, and Apostolic faith. I also hope they motivate you to live as Evangelists of the Good News announced by the Gospel Writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Chaplain's Counsel when evidencing the Truths of Christianity can bring a harmony to the alarming dissonance of today s secular culture. Our souls and spiritual senses are awakened. Our prayer life is enhanced by the experience of stimulation of our human senses. Such stimulation leads to contemplation and to adoration. Our senses are purified for God in all his beauty and mystery, and our awareness of the wonders and beauty of His creation of this world lifts up our souls. Msgr. John L. FitzGerald, Ph.D. Fr. O Neill Council Chaplain, Deputy State Chaplain In my study I have a reproduction of a graffiti that reads: Without P.S. Here is a hint about the music, life would not be fair. To which I shout out a fervent AMEN! topics in the booklet. Please join us for our Wine & Cheese Social sponsored by your Officers! We will also present the calendar of events for the year. If you have an idea for an event please contact me! Now is not too soon to start gathering these. If you have donations, please bring them to the first meeting or contact Anne directly. Ladies (and Gents too!) with the summer weather here and the heat, please make sure to check on your elderly loved ones, neighbors and friends to make sure they are doing ok. A phone call, e mail or a quick stop by would be most welcomed I am sure. I hope everyone is getting some rest and relaxation during these summer months. 9 August 2013 Pag e 9 A t the end of June, we celebrated our new third degree member, Corey Williams, and new Honorary Life Members, Edward Moore, John Gramling, Gerald Preston, and Thomas Smithberger during our Honor s Banquet. Corey shared his story of Catholic conversion, which was very inspirational. Other special recognition and awards were given to Charlie Vlk, John Paul Ponticelli, and the Gough Vandenberg family. Charlie received a special life time achievement award for his faithful service as the Council Treasurer for many years. Charlie s outstanding service to manage the council s finances, along with the outstanding service of our Financial Secretary, Drew Hilbinger, has assured accountability and efficient use of R Honors Banquet council resources. Charlie has agreed to stay on as Treasurer, temporarily, until we can find a replacement. Please contact the Grand Knight of you are interested or know of someone that might be a good fit for the Treasurer position. F John Paul JP Ponticelli received the Knight of the Year Award. JP picked up family chairman job, accepted the Inside Guard position, chaired family events, helped with virtually every event/activity, and helps keep up the facilities. JP has become a fixture in the council and one of its most reliable members. The Gough Vandenbergs were awarded Family of the Year, and they were everywhere this past year. Justin Gough, a seminarian, received the award for his family. George Zimmerman Trial ecently, George Zimmerman was acquitted from charges that he murdered Travon Martin. There are different reasonable opinions that one could hold based on the facts of this case, but what is worthy for us, brother knights, to consider and contemplate is the reaction afterwards. The news media, which is mainly to blame for the sensationalism of the trial, covered numerous protests in the wake of the verdict and offered numerous pundits that seemed to provide an endless stream of comments. What surprised and dismayed me, one who followed closely the evidence that was presented, was how many people knew very little about the actual facts of the trial but yet were so passionately protesting or commenting on the outcome. The enemy of Democracy is an uninformed and ignorant public, and the lesson in all of this is that we brother knights need to inform ourselves on important matters, and challenge and friends, family members, and neighbors to also be well informed. If we let our passions get in the way of reason, ultimately baseless opinions will be held and bad decisions will be made. We also need to be aware of persons that would lie or tell partial truths for political or financial gains. Justin attends virtually every event that he can and is always ready to give a helping hand. Lisa Gough (Justin s Mom) is President of the K Ladies. Loretta Vandenberg (Justin s Grandmother) is a K Lady Member and longtime council contributor, and Dick Vandenberg (Justin s Grandfather is a pillar of the council. Dick is a Past Grand Knight, current Trustee, 1st Degree Team Member, New Member Orientation/admissions Team Member, Christmas Card Program (State and Council), and big idea man. Thank You Gough Vandenbergs! Knight of the Month, Family of the Month & Independence Day Celebration O ur Knight of the Month for July is Keith Elliott. Keith chaired our Independence Day Celebration, including coordinating logistics with Oregon Ridge Park, handling the BSO tickets, and overseeing setup and cleanup for the event. About 70 people attended the event that included a picnic, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra concert, and fireworks. For similar reasons, the Gleeson family is named Family of the Month for July. Andy Gleeson planned and prepared an outstanding menu that included his fabulous ribs and other delicious food items. The Gleeson family all attended, and helped with the setup and cleanup of the event. Thank You Keith and Gleesons! If you missed this event, you should make sure you attend next year. Once again, a great time was had by all, and at terrific value. Where else could you have enjoyed an all you can eat well prepared meal, all you can drink beer, a fabulous concert, the comfort and convenience of the pavilion, and fireworks to boot?
