Lighthouse News Week 8, Term 2 15 th June 2016 A Ministry of Wyong Baptist Church OUR MISSION To provide a Christian educational community founded on Biblically based beliefs, values and behaviour. We do this to equip young people to be responsible and responsive disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. Principal s Message In Matthew 18, Jesus tells the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant. In it, there is a king who wants to settle his accounts with his servants. One servant has a great debt; so much so that he could never repay it. In order to settle his account, the king orders him to sell his wife and children. In response to this command, the servant falls to his knees and begs the king for more time to pay. Rather than give him more time, the king takes pity on him and cancels his debt altogether and lets him go free. Leaving from the king, the servant finds a fellow servant who owes him a small debt. Unable to pay this small debt, the fellow servant falls to his knees and begs for more time to pay. Unlike the king, the servant refuses the request and has the man thrown into prison until he can repay the debt. The story paints the response from the king and the servant as being in stark contrast. The king, who was owed much found compassion and forgiveness; yet the servant, who had been forgiven much, could find no room in his heart for forgiveness. Have you ever been wronged by someone? Most of us have at some point in time and, usually, it hurts. In this parable, Jesus challenges us strongly about what we do with this hurt. Through Jesus, we find unconditional and limitless forgiveness, and like the servant, we all carry much that needs forgiveness from God. Having been forgiven much, do we willingly forgive others? SHINING LIGHT Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. Psalm 51:4 On Sunday night, I watched a show about a young lady who was responsible for the murders of her family. In her attempt, her father somehow managed to survive the horror, leaving him and his imprisoned daughter as the only surviving members of that family unit. Eight years into a minimum 42 year sentence, her father communicates with her and speaks of his forgiveness of her for what she did. For many, this is hard to understand; yet for the dad, somehow he found this forgiveness in his heart. How do we find the strength and desire to forgive those who wrong us? First and foremost we need to comprehend what God has done for us. When we understand how great our problem with sin is and how significant our need for forgiveness is, forgiving others becomes a much easier task. David says in Psalm 51 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and are justified when you judge. (Psalm 51:4). When we sin, we actually sin against God. Yet God s love for us is so great He made the way for us to be forgiven through His own son Jesus. Just as we have been forgiven much, so too should we forgive others. God bless, Ian Liney Page (@wyongccs)

Parents are welcome to attend. School Uniform & Lost Uniforms There have been multiple cases of students losing their labelled uniform (jumpers, jackets, hats) and not being able to locate them in Lost Property. We ask that you please regularly check that your child is wearing their own uniform and not someone else s. Particularly during the cooler months, it is common that students will wear a jumper to school and then take it off during the day; often being left on the ground and then mistakenly picked up by another student and taken home. This can become frustrating for both parents and students, so we ask that you please make a conscious effort to check your uniforms. Please encourage your children to check their own clothing and to put their uniforms straight into their school bag if they are not wearing them. Thank you. Important Reminder! Please be reminded that we are a High Risk Foods Minimised school. This means that parents, students and staff are requested to refrain from bringing peanuts, tree nuts, peanut butter or Nutella (chocolate/hazelnut) spreads to the school. Please adhere closely to this policy, as we have numerous students throughout the school who have an anaphylactic allergy to nuts. Head Office: Onsite Shop: Page 2

Prayer Points Pray for the students and staff involved in our school musical, either on stage or behind the scenes. Pray that they will be able to shine Jesus light into our school and wider community through their involvement. Pray also that audience members will be challenged by the message within Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Ask God to help our school be a shining light for Jesus to the wider community and that we can be aware of the needs of others within our community so that we may serve them in a Christ-like way. Pray for our female staff who are carrying precious new life and preparing to welcome a new family member. Pray for good health and sustained energy, and for God s protection over their growing child. Praise God for the great weather we were blessed with for last week s Athletics Carnivals and that God was with all our students on the day. Pray for the staff and students as we near the end of another term. Pray for endurance and patience. Building Fund Donations Reminder about Building Fund Donations as 30 th June is fast approaching (Tax Deductible) It is important as a school community that we all band together to support the further development of our school, not only for the current generation, but for the generations to come. The recent completion of the B Block extension has been a great example of enhancing our students learning environment and freeing up more space for our Middle and Senior Students. We are currently looking at the construction of a covered walkway linking A, B, C and E Blocks together. In addition to this, plans are underway for the new Creative and Performing Arts Centre and associated classrooms. Donating to the school s Building Fund is a great way of supporting our school and is tax deductible. Many private schools similar to our size advertise between $200 and $300 per family per year as a giving guide. Gifts over $2 are tax deductible. Please prayerfully consider your donation. If you have any questions relating to the School Building Fund, please contact our Business Manager, Grant Kayes. Should you wish to make a donation, please make cheques payable to Wyong Christian Community School Building Fund. Alternatively, you can make an online payment to our Building Fund account (please note that this is different to our Fees account). Please us with the name and address that the tax deductible receipt is to be made out to. Our Building Fund banking details are as follows: Wyong Christian Community School Building Fund BSB: A/C: Please include your surname in the reference box of your payment. Page 3

Greetings friends of Junior School. Junior School News We have had a fun filled couple of weeks and it will continue for the remainder of the term. Our Athletics Carnival was a delight. Our Lord turned on the most magnificent blue sky day and the kids competed honourably. The records tumbled and PBs were enjoyed. Thank you to all of the families who were able to take time out of their busy schedules and join us for the day. Thank you also for your patience with the closed field and modifications to the Infants Athletics Fun Day and discuss event. Congratulations to Mr Knibbs for organising this wonderful event and thanks also to the Year 10 PASS students who were so outstandingly helpful. On Tuesday, our Year 4 students got to enjoy their Japanese Day. The wonderful Mrs Ormsby and her Year 4 team organised some Japanese themed activities, culminating in a fine culinary experience for the students at lunchtime with Yakisoba noodles and an assortment of Japanese treats. A lot of out-of-hours preparation goes into making this event happen. We are especially grateful given that it comes off the back of report preparation. God bless you Mrs Ormsby, thank you for blessing our kids. Next week we have our Teddy Bears' Picnic and lunchtime concert. Our Year 6 Events Team are holding auditions and preparing run sheets this week. Our last lunchtime concert was outstanding and it was their first event; therefore, this upcoming concert should be amazing. I am so excited already about the Term 4 Carols Evening. We have a combined Whole School Chapel on Friday, 24 th June (Week 9) in the MPC at 9am. We will have live worship with a band consisting of staff, students and special guests, plus a message from the amazing Mrs Carly Thomson. If you can spare an hour on Friday morning it will be a wonderful event. To top off all of this excitement, we then roll into our school musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Such an exciting term. God bless. Mr Paul Marks Head of Junior School pmarks@wyongccs.nsw.edu.au Page 8

Senior School Science Titration Competition Over the last term, students in Preliminary Chemistry have been preparing for the NSW Titration Competition. The NSW Schools Titration Competition is a quantitative analytical competition open to NSW students currently enrolled in Senior Chemistry, studying towards the Higher School Certificate. The competition operates at a number of school and university venues throughout the state. Students compete in teams of three and, in ninety minutes, must complete a set of acid-base titrations to determine the unknown concentration of a weak acid. The team's score will depend on the accuracy of the work of its members. Last Wednesday, WCCS had its own competition to determine the members who will represent our school at Newcastle Grammar on Tuesday, 21 st June. The following students will be representing WCCS at the Titration Competition: Brandon Anway, Tahlia Blanshard, Taylor Cornwell, Amy Hounslow, Lauren Lomas, Danielle Nott, Lindsay Patch, Christiana Russell, Christian Vieiro and Gabriel Lear. The Great Egg Drop Challenge: Physics is fun in Year 10 Science Students in Year 10 had the challenge to design, with limited equipment, a device to protect an egg when falling from a one-storey building. It was a fun opportunity to work as a team and take into account the Laws of Physics. Some eggs survived and some met their fate. 11 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Over the past few years we have been investigating the potential benefits of incorporating more technology into our learning practices. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that students are more engaged and can achieve stronger educational outcomes as a result, if technology is embedded into their lessons. We also continue to carefully think through how best to incorporate more technology into WCCS. Like all schools, our context is unique and determining what would be the best fit for our school has been a key priority in our thinking. In 2017, WCCS is going to expand our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program to incorporate all students in Middle and Senior School. This will result in the incumbent Year 7 and 10 students being required to have a device. As a school, we are well aware that implementing such a program has an array of implications and will also instigate many questions from parents. Our desire is to be entirely transparent in this process and to give you considerable notice to prepare you and your child for this initiative in Rather than seek to answer a multitude of questions in this letter we feel it would be more beneficial to host an information evening where this initiative can be explained in much greater detail and your questions can be answered. This information evening will occur on Wednesday, 15 th June in the Multi Purpose Centre at 7pm. I would like to strongly encourage you to make this evening a priority and come along to hear about the exciting things we have planned and what we have learned on our journey so far. You can even bring your smartphone along and experience firsthand some of the ways new technologies aid in learning! In our ongoing research into technologies in schools one specific point is being confirmed constantly. There is no perfect way to embrace this shift in education. There are a vast array of strategies and theories regarding technology implementation, all with their own strengths and weaknesses. Our desire on the 15th of June is to clearly explain to you where we are heading in embracing this next chapter in education and the reasons behind why we have decided to undertake it the way we have. Please come along to hear more about this exciting phase in the life of Wyong Christian Community School. Mr Ian Liney Principal Page 11

Goshin Ryu Karate Wyong: Update As of 30 th June, Goshin Ryu Karate has started their classes at Wyong Christian Community School. Our first two members, Indianna and Edan, have both learnt how to punch, how to defend from a punch, and how to position when striking. We have had two new members join the class since then, Harry and Nathan, with Edan also returning for his second lesson. They all learnt how to punch, block and kick. We also concentrated on how to balance kicks and have control. All students are learning the basics of their white belt and this week we will start our first Kata-Taikyoku Shodan. One of our students has rated the class as being 9/10 learning and 9.9/10 for how much fun it is. We are excited to have our first four members... who will be the fifth??? This is the start of something big and I would love to have your support in joining the karate classes. Classes are only $10 per lesson and are on Mondays 3:45-5:00pm in C4 and C5, for students in Years K-12. For any enquiries, please contact me on or via cvieiro1@gmail.com Thank you.
